The fourteen suits continued to glow.

Asha watched the readings climb.

Then climb again.

“Dinraal.”

“I see it.”

“No,” Asha replied. “I do not think you do.”

The floating instruments behind her moved rapidly.

Each projected a different stream of information.

Energy density.

Spatial distortion.

Biological response.

Unknown signals.

The final reading made no sense at all.

Asha stared at it.

“The Silver is communicating with something.”

Eve’s visor appeared over her eyes.

“With the colonies?”

“No.”

“The fleet?”

“No.”

Asha enlarged the reading.

A web of silver lines spread across the laboratory.

One line connected each suit to Dinraal.

Others connected the suits to one another.

But the largest line did not end anywhere inside the laboratory.

It passed through the floor.

Through the station.

Then vanished into space.

Asha pointed toward it.

“It is communicating with that.”

Everyone looked upward.

Gilgamesh frowned.

“That is a ceiling.”

“Beyond the ceiling.”

“Space?”

“Beyond space.”

The laboratory grew silent.

Dinraal looked down at his gauntlet.

The Silver felt different.

Until now, it had always seemed alive in the way fire was alive. It moved. It reacted. It consumed and transformed.

This was something else.

The Silver was listening.

And somewhere far away, something was listening through it.

Isolde stepped closer to Dinraal.

The silver thread around her wrist brightened.

“Can you feel it?”

“Yes.”

“What does it want?”

Dinraal closed his eyes.

At first, he felt only the presence of the others.

Asha’s relentless curiosity.

Eve’s calm attention.

Aurelius’s desire to protect everyone in the room.

Arcturus already imagining how the suits might change the fleet.

Tiamat’s fear carefully hidden beneath pride.

Aramaeis’s readiness.

Gilgamesh’s excitement.

Alexander’s ambition.

Julius’s caution.

Cleopatra’s suspicion.

Johanna’s faith.

Rhiannon’s confidence.

The First Weapon’s uncomplicated joy.

And Isolde.

Always Isolde.

Her presence was not louder than the others.

It was clearer.

A path home.

Dinraal reached beyond them.

The laboratory disappeared.

The station disappeared.

For one terrible moment, he felt the emptiness between worlds.

Then he found something.

Not a voice.

Not a person.

A memory.

Millions of stars appeared in his mind.

Some burned blue.

Some red.

Some silver.

Civilizations rose beneath them.

People discovered fire.

Built cities.

Crossed oceans.

Reached the stars.

Then the Ash came.

World after world went dark.

The vision accelerated.

Armies fought.

Kings fell.

Dragons burned.

Humans endured.

The Silver appeared again and again throughout history, but never as an army.

A shield held by one warrior.

A blade carried by another.

A crown worn by someone whose name had been forgotten.

Always one.

Never many.

Until now.

Dinraal opened his eyes.

His face had gone pale.

Isolde caught his arm.

“What did you see?”

“The Silver remembers every civilization that fought the Ashen.”

Tiamat’s expression changed.

“Every civilization?”

Dinraal nodded.

“And they all lost.”

No one spoke.

Even Gilgamesh’s smile disappeared.

Aurelius lowered his shield.

“Why show you that?”

“Because we asked if the Silver could make more of itself.”

Asha looked toward the ancient weapon.

“And it answered by showing us why it never did.”

Dinraal turned to her.

“Yes.”

Eve studied the glowing line leading into space.

“There is a reason the Silver was limited to individual wielders.”

Cleopatra folded her arms.

“Power is rarely withheld without cause.”

Alexander raised his sword.

“Or without fear.”

The Silver weapon pulsed.

Once.

Every suit locked.

Dinraal’s armor stiffened around him.

Johanna tried to move her arm.

She could not.

“My armor is not responding.”

“Neither is mine,” Julius said.

The floating weapons behind Alexander froze.

Tiamat attempted to transform, but her wings stopped halfway through forming.

The First Weapon barked.

His back cannon appeared.

It pointed directly at Dinraal.

Everyone went still.

“Do not move,” Asha warned.

“I don’t think any of us can,” Gilgamesh replied.

A new message appeared across every screen.

MULTIPLICATION REQUIRES UNITY.

Asha read it aloud.

Rhiannon looked around the room.

“We are united.”

The Silver pulsed again.

The laboratory disappeared.

They found themselves standing on a vast white plain beneath a silver sky.

There were no walls.

No doors.

No station.

Only fourteen people and one armored dog.

Asha’s instruments had vanished.

Eve’s drones were gone.

Everyone still wore Silver, but none of them could command it.

Isolde looked down at her wrist.

The thread remained.

“Dinraal.”

“I’m here.”

The Silver sky darkened.

A figure appeared in the distance.

It was enormous.

Humanoid in shape, but far too tall to be human.

Its body was made of shifting metal.

No face rested beneath its crown.

Only a smooth silver surface.

Aurelius moved in front of the others.

His shield would not appear.

The figure took one step.

The plain shook.

Tiamat stared at it.

“I have seen that shape before.”

“Where?” Aramaeis asked.

“In the oldest memories of dragonkind.”

The figure stopped.

Tiamat’s voice fell to a whisper.

“The Argent Sovereign.”

Dinraal looked at her.

“You know what it is?”

“No. Only what the first dragons called it.”

The faceless head turned toward Dinraal.

A voice moved through the plain.

It did not enter through their ears.

It spoke directly into their bones.

ONE WILL MAY COMMAND THE SILVER.

Dinraal stepped forward.

“Mine?”

The Sovereign looked at the others.

ONE WILL.

Cleopatra understood first.

“It wants us to surrender control.”

Julius’s expression hardened.

“To Dinraal?”

“To someone,” Cleopatra replied.

The Sovereign raised one hand.

Silver energy gathered above its palm.

CHOOSE.

A line appeared on the ground.

On one side stood Dinraal.

On the other stood everyone else.

Isolde immediately crossed the line.

The Sovereign turned toward her.

Isolde stared back.

“No.”

The word echoed across the plain.

The Sovereign lowered its hand.

NO?

“The Silver did not choose a master and thirteen servants.”

Dinraal looked at her.

“Isolde.”

She ignored him.

“You told us to choose one will. That is not unity. That is obedience.”

The faceless figure remained motionless.

Isolde raised her wrist.

The silver thread shone.

“The Silver chose a bond. Dinraal carries its inheritance, but I can call him home. He can find me when I am lost. Neither of us commands the other.”

A second line appeared.

It separated Isolde from Dinraal.

CHOOSE.

Dinraal crossed it.

He stood beside her.

“I already did.”

The Sovereign tilted its head.

Then the plain changed.

A city appeared around them.

Towers rose into the sky.

Thousands of Silver-armored warriors marched through the streets.

Every suit was identical.

Every step occurred at the same time.

Every head turned together.

At the center of the city stood a single ruler.

A figure wearing a crown.

The ruler lifted one hand.

The entire army lifted theirs.

The ruler pointed toward the horizon.

The army marched.

No hesitation.

No fear.

No disagreement.

Perfect unity.

Asha looked around.

“This is what the Silver was designed to do.”

“No,” Eve said.

Her voice was quiet.

“This is what someone made it do.”

The vision shifted.

The army reached another city.

Its people fled.

Silver weapons rose.

The sky became light.

When the light faded, the city was gone.

Dinraal stared at the empty land.

“They used the Silver to conquer.”

The Sovereign stood above the ruined city.

UNITY BRINGS VICTORY.

Aurelius stepped forward.

“That is not unity.”

The Sovereign faced him.

Aurelius looked at the identical soldiers.

“That is the death of choice.”

His shield appeared.

Faint at first.

Then solid.

Aurelius smiled.

The Sovereign looked at the shield.

Julius walked beside him.

“A disciplined army follows orders.”

His Silver sword appeared.

“But a good commander does not erase the people following him.”

Cleopatra joined them.

“Only a weak ruler fears the thoughts of those who serve.”

Her crown formed.

Alexander laughed.

“And only a fool wants an army incapable of adapting.”

His weapons appeared behind him.

One after another, they crossed the line.

Gilgamesh summoned his axe.

Johanna raised her sword.

Rhiannon spread her wings.

Aramaeis transformed his hands into armored claws.

Tiamat’s horns emerged.

Arcturus’s visor activated.

Asha’s instruments returned.

Eve’s spheres formed around her.

The First Weapon barked and grew until his armored head reached Dinraal’s shoulder.

At last, all of them stood together.

Not in identical armor.

Not in perfect formation.

Fourteen different suits.

Fourteen different wills.

One purpose.

The Argent Sovereign looked down at them.

Dinraal stepped forward.

“You want one will?”

His gauntlet transformed.

A Silver blade extended from it.

“You will not have ours.”

The Sovereign raised its hand.

The identical army turned.

Thousands of soldiers surrounded them.

Isolde drew her sword.

“Now what?”

Dinraal looked at the others.

“We learn what the suits can do.”

Gilgamesh grinned.

“There he is.”

The Silver army charged.

Alexander moved first.

He raised his spear.

Hundreds of floating weapons formed above them.

“Julius!”

Julius slammed his shield into the ground.

A curved barrier appeared across the battlefield.

The first wave struck it.

The impact shook the city.

“Aurelius!”

Aurelius lifted his enormous shield.

Julius’s barrier expanded.

What had covered fourteen people now covered an entire street.

Rhiannon’s crown blazed.

Silver energy swept through the group.

Every suit brightened.

Alexander’s weapons multiplied.

Gilgamesh roared and charged through the barrier.

Johanna followed.

They hit the opposing army together.

Gilgamesh’s axe broke three shields in one swing.

Johanna’s sword transformed into a spear, passing through the gaps in the enemy formation.

The identical soldiers adjusted.

All at once.

Their shields locked.

Their weapons became lances.

“Left side!” Arcturus shouted.

His visor showed him the entire battlefield.

“They’re trying to surround us.”

Tiamat transformed.

She rose above the buildings in her Silver dragon form.

Aramaeis followed.

The two dragons swept across the left flank.

They did not breathe fire.

Their mouths opened, releasing waves of Silver force.

Enemy soldiers scattered.

But they rose again.

Damaged armor repaired itself.

Broken weapons reformed.

Asha watched through her instruments.

“They’re connected to the Sovereign!”

Eve’s drones spread through the city.

“Then we separate them.”

Her spheres became communication relays.

Suddenly, everyone could see what Arcturus saw.

The entire battlefield appeared in their minds.

Every street.

Every soldier.

Every movement.

Dinraal looked toward the Argent Sovereign.

It stood at the city’s center.

Silver lines extended from its body to every member of its army.

“There.”

Isolde saw it too.

“The crown?”

“The crown.”

Dinraal spread his wings.

He shot into the sky.

Isolde’s armor formed wings of its own.

She followed.

The Sovereign noticed them.

Half the army turned.

Thousands of weapons rose.

“Now!” Cleopatra commanded.

Her bracelets flashed.

A wave of energy spread through the enemy ranks.

The soldiers hesitated.

Only for a second.

It was enough.

Alexander took control of his floating weapons.

He sent them upward.

They intercepted the enemy’s attack above Dinraal and Isolde.

Silver explosions filled the sky.

Asha stared at Cleopatra’s readings.

“What did you do?”

“I introduced doubt.”

“To machines?”

Cleopatra smiled.

“To an army that has forgotten it once had minds.”

The enemy soldiers began moving differently.

Some lowered their weapons.

Others looked around.

The perfect formation weakened.

The Sovereign raised both hands.

OBEDIENCE IS UNITY.

Its command struck the city.

The soldiers straightened.

Cleopatra staggered.

Rhiannon caught her.

“Do it again.”

Cleopatra shook her head.

“It is too strong.”

“Then you will not do it alone.”

Rhiannon’s crown touched Cleopatra’s.

Their energies joined.

Cleopatra raised both hands.

This time, her voice moved through the entire army.

“Remember yourselves.”

The identical helmets began to crack.

Faces appeared beneath them.

Different faces.

Different species.

People from worlds that no longer existed.

They looked at one another.

They looked at the ruined city.

They looked at the Sovereign.

And they stopped marching.

The Sovereign turned toward Cleopatra.

THREAT IDENTIFIED.

A beam of Silver energy formed above its head.

Aurelius saw it.

He planted his shield.

The beam struck.

His barrier bent.

Cracks spread through it.

Aurelius fell to one knee.

Tiamat landed behind him and pressed both hands against the shield.

Aramaeis joined her.

Then Julius.

Then Johanna.

The barrier steadied.

Dinraal and Isolde reached the Sovereign.

It swung one massive arm.

Dinraal blocked.

The impact launched him through three buildings.

“Dinraal!”

“I’m fine.”

He emerged from the rubble.

His armor was already repairing itself.

Isolde attacked the Sovereign’s crown.

Her sword struck the metal.

A crack appeared.

The Sovereign seized her.

Its enormous fingers closed around her body.

Dinraal felt the silver thread pull tight.

Not power.

Direction.

Home.

He vanished.

Space folded around him.

Dinraal appeared between the Sovereign’s fingers.

He placed his gauntlet against its hand.

“You made one mistake.”

The Sovereign looked at him.

“You thought the Silver made us an army.”

Dinraal released everything the suit had gathered.

Fire.

Lightning.

Dragonforce.

WordSmithing.

Human will.

Silver light.

The Sovereign’s hand shattered.

Isolde fell.

Dinraal caught her.

Together, they flew toward the crown.

The Sovereign tried to stop them.

The others acted.

Gilgamesh threw his axe.

Alexander sent a hundred spears.

Johanna’s blade became a chain and wrapped around the Sovereign’s arm.

Tiamat and Aramaeis seized its shoulders.

Aurelius expanded his barrier inside the Sovereign’s legs, locking them in place.

Asha found the crown’s weakest point.

Eve transmitted it to everyone.

Arcturus coordinated the attack.

Julius called the moment.

Cleopatra disrupted the Sovereign’s command.

Rhiannon strengthened them all.

The First Weapon grew to the size of a dragon.

A massive cannon formed across his armored back.

He roared loud enough to shake the ground.

The cannon fired.

The blast struck the crown.

A crack split it in two.

Dinraal and Isolde attacked together.

Their blades struck the same point.

The crown shattered.

The city froze.

The Sovereign stared at them.

For the first time, a face appeared beneath its smooth mask.

It belonged to no single person.

It changed every second.

Human.

Dragon.

Something with four eyes.

Something made of light.

Hundreds of species.

Hundreds of lost worlds.

The Sovereign fell to its knees.

The identical Silver armor disappeared from the soldiers.

They stood as they had been long ago.

The Sovereign spoke with a quieter voice.

WE CHOSE ONE WILL BECAUSE WE FEARED DEFEAT.

Dinraal lowered his blade.

“Did it save you?”

NO.

The city began fading.

THE ASH LEARNED THE WILL.

The Sovereign’s body broke into drifting particles.

THEN IT LEARNED THE SILVER.

Asha went still.

“What does that mean?”

The Sovereign looked toward her.

MULTIPLICATION CREATES STRENGTH.

Its gaze moved to Dinraal.

MULTIPLICATION CREATES A PATH.

“A path for what?” Isolde asked.

The last of the Sovereign crumbled.

FOR THE THING THAT MADE THE ASHEN.

The city vanished.

The laboratory returned.

Everyone stood exactly where they had been.

Only one second had passed.

The Silver suits released them.

Asha’s instruments screamed warnings.

Eve turned toward the main screen.

The line extending beyond space had changed.

Something was traveling along it.

Toward them.

Arcturus looked at the fleet readings.

“All ships are detecting a spatial disturbance.”

“How far?” Aurelius asked.

Arcturus stared at the answer.

“It isn’t far.”

The ancient weapon pulsed.

The laboratory windows darkened.

Stars disappeared behind a spreading shadow.

Dinraal felt Tiamat’s fear.

The same fear she had carried when she hid from the universe.

The same fear she had refused to name.

He turned toward her.

“Mother.”

Tiamat stared into the darkness.

Her Silver armor formed around her without being called.

“I thought we had more time.”

A shape moved behind the stars.

Far larger than a ship.

Far larger than the station.

Asha’s voice trembled.

“What is that?”

Tiamat reached for Dinraal’s hand.

“The reason I ran.”

Across every screen, a final message appeared.

THE FIRST QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED.

A second line followed.

NOW THE QUESTIONER COMES.
