The room was silent.

Too silent.

Dinraal stood beside the bed.

His mother was exhausted.

Bahamut had not moved from her side.

Eve stood near the door.

Gilgamesh paced.

Aurelius stood near the window.

His expression was unreadable.

And Isolde—

Isolde sat beside Tiamat.

Holding her hand.

The little girl looked terrified.

Dinraal moved closer.

Tiamat opened her eyes.

She looked at Isolde.

”You don’t have to stay.”

Isolde shook her head.

”I want to.”

Tiamat managed a tired smile.

”Why?”

Isolde looked at Tiamat’s stomach.

Then answered honestly.

”I’ve been waiting for him.”

Dinraal’s breath caught.

Tiamat squeezed her hand.

”He knows.”

Isolde looked up.

”How?”

Tiamat smiled weakly.

”He always moves when you speak.”

The girl looked down.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Tiamat reached toward her.

Isolde immediately took her hand.

”You can be scared,” Tiamat whispered.

”I know.”

”Then why are you trying not to be?”

Isolde looked toward her stomach.

”Because he’s scared too.”

Dinraal froze.

Tiamat’s expression changed.

Isolde leaned closer.

Her voice trembled.

”I’m here, Dinraal.”

The world disappeared.

He was inside again.

The darkness surrounded him.

But it was changing.

Cracking.

The warmth that had protected him for twenty-four months was beginning to release him.

He felt fear.

The first fear he had ever known.

Then—

her voice.

I’m here.

Dinraal moved.

Outside, Isolde gasped.

Tiamat cried out.

Bahamut stood.

”Now.”

Eve moved toward the bed.

Gilgamesh stopped pacing.

Aurelius turned away.

The room became chaos.

But inside the darkness—

there was only Isolde.

”Din?”

He moved.

”I know.”

Her voice broke.

”You don’t want to come out.”

Dinraal struggled.

The darkness was safe.

Warm.

Known.

Outside was everything else.

He moved again.

Isolde pressed both hands against Tiamat’s stomach.

”You have to.”

A pulse.

A movement.

”I’ll be there.”

The darkness cracked.

Dinraal felt something pulling him.

He resisted.

Isolde began crying.

”Don’t leave me waiting.”

Dinraal stopped.

Then she whispered—

”I promised we’d be friends.”

The unborn Dinraal moved.

The darkness broke.

Tiamat screamed.

Bahamut caught her hand.

”I’m here.”

She glared at him through tears.

”You’d better be.”

Another contraction tore through her.

Tiamat screamed again.

Eve moved closer.

”Again.”

”I know!”

Eve did not answer.

For the first time—

Dinraal saw his father break.

Bahamut’s hands were shaking.

Not from fear for himself.

Fear for them.

Tiamat.

The child.

His family.

”Breathe,” he whispered.

Tiamat laughed once.

It sounded almost hysterical.

”Bahamut.”

”Yes?”

”If you tell me to breathe one more time—”

”I’ll stop.”

”You’d better.”

She screamed again.

Bahamut’s face crumpled.

Dinraal stared.

His father was crying.

Quietly.

Trying desperately to hide it.

Tiamat saw.

Her expression softened.

”Hey.”

Bahamut leaned closer.

”I love you.”

Tiamat stared at him.

Then laughed through tears.

”You chose now?”

”I thought you might want to know.”

”I already knew.”

Another contraction.

She screamed.

Bahamut held her hand.

”I’m sorry.”

Tiamat’s eyes narrowed.

”For what?”

”For all of it.”

She stared at him.

Then pulled him closer.

”You can apologize after I kill you.”

Bahamut laughed.

And cried.

At the same time.

Then Eve said—

”Now.”

Everything changed.

Inside the darkness—

Dinraal heard Isolde.

”Dinraal!”

Her voice cut through everything.

He moved.

The world pulled him forward.

The warmth disappeared.

The darkness shattered.

Light exploded.

Cold struck him.

Sound struck him.

Air—

for the first time in his existence—

entered his lungs.

Pain.

Terror.

Life.

Dinraal made no sound .

The room fell silent.

For one second.

Two.

Three.

Tiamat stopped breathing.

Bahamut’s face went white.

”No.”

Dinraal watched.

Watched himself.

Small.

Motionless.

Tiamat reached for him.

”Give him to me.”

Eve’s face was tense.

”Wait.”

”No!”

Tiamat tried to rise.

Bahamut held her.

”Tiamat.”

”Give me my son!”

Then—

the newborn Dinraal inhaled.

A tiny, ragged breath.

And cried.

The sound was furious.

Demanding.

Alive.

Tiamat collapsed back against the bed.

A sob tore from her.

Bahamut fell into the nearest chair.

His hands covered his face.

Gilgamesh turned away.

Aurelius closed his eyes.

Even Eve smiled.

And Isolde—

Isolde began crying.

Loudly.

Tiamat laughed weakly.

”Why are you crying?”

Isolde pointed at the newborn Dinraal.

”He scared me!”

Bahamut laughed through his tears.

Dinraal was placed against Tiamat’s chest.

For the first time—

mother and son touched.

Tiamat looked down.

And began to cry again.

Dinraal watched her.

His mother.

The woman who had carried him for twenty-four months.

Two years.

Through pain.

Through fear.

Through uncertainty.

She touched his silver hair.

”So this is what you were doing in there.”

Dinraal could not answer.

But his tiny hand moved.

Closed around one of her fingers.

Tiamat broke.

She bent over him.

Her tears fell against his hair.

”My beautiful boy.”

Dinraal looked away.

The memory hurt too much.

Bahamut stood.

Slowly.

As though afraid a sudden movement might break the world.

He approached the bed.

Tiamat looked at him.

”Your son.”

Bahamut stared.

For a long time, he could not speak.

Then—

”My son.”

His voice broke.

The words struck Dinraal harder than any blade.

Bahamut reached out.

Then stopped.

Afraid to touch him.

Tiamat looked at him.

”Bahamut.”

He looked at her.

”Hold him.”

”I don’t want to hurt him.”

Tiamat smiled through tears.

”He’s your son.”

Bahamut laughed once.

A broken sound.

”That doesn’t make me less dangerous.”

Tiamat’s expression became fierce.

”He needs his father.”

Bahamut stared at her.

Then at Dinraal.

Finally—

Tiamat placed the newborn child in his arms.

Bahamut froze.

The most feared dragon in the Empire—

the conqueror.

The king.

The monster history would later blame for everything—

looked down at a newborn child.

And trembled.

Dinraal watched his father’s face.

Bahamut whispered—

”Hello.”

The newborn Dinraal moved.

Bahamut’s breath caught.

”I waited a long time for you.”

Tiamat laughed weakly.

”We all did.”

Bahamut looked at her.

Then at Dinraal.

”I don’t know how to be your father.”

Dinraal’s tiny fingers moved.

Bahamut swallowed.

”But I’ll learn.”

He lowered his forehead to Dinraal’s.

”I promise.”

The room became silent.

Then—

Isolde sniffed.

Bahamut looked up.

The little girl stood beside the bed.

Still crying.

Still watching.

Dinraal moved in his father’s arms.

Toward her.

Bahamut noticed.

Tiamat noticed.

Isolde stepped closer.

”Can I see?”

Bahamut looked uncertain.

Tiamat nodded.

”Come here.”

Isolde climbed carefully onto the bed.

She stared down at Dinraal.

For a long moment—

she said nothing.

Then she whispered—

”Hello.”

Dinraal moved.

His tiny hand reached outward.

Isolde gasped.

”He remembers me.”

The room became completely still.

Eve stepped forward.

Her silver hair caught the light.

”May I?”

Tiamat nodded.

Eve touched Dinraal’s forehead.

Silver light appeared.

The room changed.

Gilgamesh frowned.

”What is that?”

Eve did not answer.

The light spread across Dinraal’s tiny body.

Then—

another light answered.

Not from Eve.

Not from Bahamut.

Not from Tiamat.

From Isolde.

The girl gasped.

A thin silver thread appeared.

It stretched from Dinraal’s tiny hand—

to Isolde’s heart.

Eve froze.

For the first time—

Dinraal saw fear in her eyes.

Gilgamesh whispered—

”No.”

Aurelius stepped forward.

”What is happening?”

Eve looked at the two children.

Then slowly closed her eyes.

When she spoke, her voice was barely audible.

”The Last Silver.”

Bahamut looked at her.

”What?”

Eve opened her eyes.

”The inheritance has chosen.”

Dinraal watched.

Isolde looked frightened.

”Chosen what?”

Eve looked at her.

Then at the newborn child.

Her expression softened.

”Both of you.”

Silence.

Bahamut frowned.

”What does that mean?”

Eve did not look away.

”For the inheritance to survive, it cannot belong to one alone.”

Gilgamesh’s expression darkened.

”The law.”

Eve nodded.

”The Last Human becomes too much.”

One person.

One inheritance.

One unbearable weight.

Power without anyone to pull them back.

But two—

Eve looked at Dinraal.

”One to carry.”

Then at Isolde.

”One to call him home.”

Dinraal stopped breathing.

Eve continued.

”The Last Silver has chosen them both.”

Young Isolde looked down at Dinraal.

”What does that mean?”

Eve stepped closer.

”It means that when he forgets who he is—”

She placed one hand over Dinraal’s tiny heart.

”—you will remind him.”

Isolde swallowed.

”And if I can’t?”

Eve was quiet.

Then she looked at Dinraal.

”He will find you.”

Silver light surrounded them.

The thread between the children brightened.

Dinraal saw something impossible.

A future.

Isolde laughing.

Isolde crying.

Isolde standing beside him.

Dinraal reaching for her.

Dinraal losing himself.

Isolde calling his name.

Two paths.

Separate.

Together.

Chosen.

Not promised.

Not forced.

Chosen.

Isolde looked at Dinraal.

Then whispered—

”Are we friends?”

The newborn Dinraal moved.

His tiny fingers closed around hers.

Isolde smiled through her tears.

”I knew it.”

Eve stepped backward.

The silver light vanished.

Tiamat looked between her son and Isolde.

”What happens now?”

Eve looked toward the stars.

”I don’t know.”

Aurelius frowned.

”You don’t know?”

Eve looked at him.

”No one does.”

Then she smiled.

”That is the point.”

Dinraal opened his eyes.

He was back in the ancient chamber.

On his knees.

Isolde was in front of him.

She was crying.

He stared at her.

”You were there.”

She laughed through her tears.

”What?”

”You were there.”

Isolde’s expression changed.

Slowly.

She looked toward the darkness.

Then back at him.

”I remember.”

Dinraal froze.

”What?”

”Not everything.”

She pressed one hand against her chest.

”But I remember talking to you.”

The chamber became quiet.

Isolde smiled weakly.

”I remember you always moving when I spoke.”

Dinraal stared.

She laughed through her tears.

”I thought I understood you.”

”You did.”

Isolde stopped.

Dinraal swallowed.

”You were the first person I ever knew.”

Her expression broke.

Dinraal looked at her.

”I couldn’t see you.”

His voice shook.

”I didn’t know what you looked like.”

Isolde stepped closer.

”But I knew your voice.”

He laughed weakly.

”I knew when you were happy.”

Her eyes filled.

”I knew when you were sad.”

Dinraal’s voice broke.

”I knew when you were lying.”

Isolde laughed.

”You could tell?”

”You were terrible at it.”

She hit his shoulder.

Dinraal smiled.

Then became serious.

”You promised me something.”

Isolde went still.

”What?”

He looked at her.

”You said you’d remember enough for both of us.”

Tears spilled down her face.

For a moment—

she couldn’t speak.

Then she stepped forward.

”You remembered.”

Dinraal shook his head.

”No.”

He took her hand.

”You reminded me.”

The ancient voice beneath the planet laughed softly.

YES.

Dinraal looked downward.

The enormous silver eye watched them.

THE LAST SILVER DID NOT CHOOSE A CHILD.

The chamber trembled.

IT CHOSE A BOND.

Gilgamesh stepped forward.

His expression was grim.

”Eve knew.”

Dinraal looked at him.

”About us?”

Gilgamesh nodded.

”She knew the inheritance could not survive inside one person forever.”

Isolde pulled away slightly.

”So she divided it?”

Gilgamesh shook his head.

”No.”

He looked at Dinraal.

”Not the power.”

Then at Isolde.

”The burden.”

Silence.

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

She looked back.

He could carry the memories.

The power.

The inheritance.

But when it threatened to consume him—

she could call him home.

And conversly—

when the world demanded too much of her—

he could find her too.

The Last Silver had not chosen them because they were destined to rule.

It had not chosen them because they were the strongest.

It had chosen them because neither of them was meant to stand alone.

Silver light moved beneath Dinraal’s skin.

Then—

a second light appeared.

Isolde gasped.

Thin silver markings spread across her wrist.

Like a thread.

Claire stepped backward.

Johanna whispered—

”Oh.”

Dinraal tightened his fingers around Isolde’s.

She looked down at their joined hands.

Then up at him.

”Din?”

He smiled faintly.

”Yes?”

Isolde squeezed his hand.

”I waited two years for you.”

Dinraal stared.

Then smiled.

”You’re never letting me forget that, are you?”

”Absolutely not.”

For the first time since the Gaunt had awakened—

Dinraal laughed.

And Isolde laughed with him.

Far beneath them—

the ancient mother stirred.

The planet trembled.

The stars waited.

War was coming.

The Ashen were killing humanity.

Aurelius was somewhere beyond the darkness.

And Dinraal still had more questions than answers.

But Isolde’s hand remained in his.

The first hand he had reached for.

Before he had even understood what reaching meant.

The Last Silver had chosen them both.

Not to make them rulers.

Not to make them weapons.

But so that when one of them was lost—

the other would remember the way home.

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

”Together?”

She smiled.

As though the answer had never been in doubt.

”Together.”

Far beneath them—

something ancient awoke.

And the silver between them burned.

TOGETHER.
