For a moment, Dinraal stood motionless, unable to grasp the feeling he was experiencing..

Isolde whispered—

”Din.”

He did not answer.

”Look at me, please...”

The communicator remained dark.

Gilgamesh looked toward it.

”That’s why.”

Dinraal swallowed.

”Why what?”

Gilgamesh looked at him.

”Why Aurelius kept the name.”

Dinraal stared.

Gilgamesh’s voice became quiet.

”Dinraal was the name Bahamut gave you.”

The ancient mother laughed beneath the world.

A voice like stone grinding against stone.

AND AURELIUS GAVE YOU ANOTHER.

Dinraal looked downward.

”Caelum.”

The chamber trembled.

Dinraal looked toward the communicator.

His hands shook.

Isolde walked to his side.

This time—

She did not take his hand immediately.

She waited.

Dinraal looked at her.

Then reached for her.

Their fingers intertwined.

The silver thread appeared between them.

Thin.

Bright.

Alive.

Gilgamesh watched.

Dinraal lifted the communicator.

For a moment—

He couldn’t activate it.

His thumb hovered over the control.

What if Aurelius didn’t answer?

What if he did?

Dinraal closed his eyes.

Then pressed it.

The communicator came alive.

A signal moved into the darkness.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Nothing.

Dinraal’s stomach tightened.

Then—

A voice.

”Dinraal?”

He froze.

Aurelius.

Not a recording.

Not a memory.

Aurelius.

Alive.

Somewhere.

Dinraal’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Isolde squeezed his hand.

Aurelius spoke again.

”Dinraal?”

His voice changed.

Concern.

”Have you evacuated yet?”

Dinraal laughed once.

Aurelius became silent.

Dinraal looked at the communicator.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

”We are still planetside.”

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Aurelius said—

”What?”

”I am learning who i really am.”

Dinraal swallowed.

”They told you everything?”

The connection became completely silent.

Gilgamesh closed his eyes.

Isolde held Dinraal’s hand tighter.

And somewhere beneath the world—

The ancient mother waited.

Aurelius finally spoke.

But his voice was no longer the Chancellor’s.

No longer the ruler’s.

No longer the voice of the man Dinraal had spent years trying to understand.

It was simply—

A father’s voice.

”You and Isolde must evacuate immediately.”

Dinraal’s eyes burned.

”Not before I learn the truth.”

Aurelius inhaled sharply.

Then whispered—

”The Ashen are nearly in position.”

Dinraal stopped breathing.

”Once they finish the countdown, everyone still planetside is dead. Please, Dinraal...no, please Caelum.”

The name brought about another memory.

Warm hands.

A man’s laughter.

A voice speaking above him.

Caelum.

Dinraal staggered backward.

Isolde caught him.

The chamber vanished.

For one impossible moment—

He was small.

Very small.

Sitting on someone’s shoulders.

Aurelius.

He could see silver banners in the distance.

Hear people cheering.

Feel strong hands holding his legs.

Then—

Aurelius’s voice.

Hold on, Caelum.

The memory shattered.

Dinraal returned to the chamber.

He was crying.

He hadn’t realized it.

Isolde stared at him.

”Din.”

He shook his head.

”Again.”

Aurelius was silent.

Dinraal’s voice broke.

”Say it again.”

On the other side of the communicator—

Aurelius stopped breathing.

Then—

”Caelum.”

Dinraal closed his eyes.

And this time—

He remembered.

Not everything.

Just pieces.

A man teaching him to walk.

A hand catching him when he fell.

Isolde laughing beside him.

Aurelius sitting beside his bed.

A voice telling him stories about stars.

Aurelius’s voice.

Goodnight, Caelum.

Dinraal covered his mouth.

The memories were not lies.

That was what hurt.

They were real.

Aurelius had loved him.

And then—

Somewhere along the way—

Something had broken.

Aurelius spoke softly.

”I stopped calling you that after you were old enough to remember your father’s name.”

Dinraal opened his eyes.

”Why?”

Aurelius was quiet.

Then—

”Because I thought it was time for you to choose who you wanted to be.”

Dinraal laughed through his tears.

”Everyone keeps saying that.”

Aurelius’s voice broke.

”I know.”

Silence.

Dinraal looked toward the darkness.

Then downward.

The ancient mother watched.

Waiting.

Listening.

Dinraal finally spoke.

”Did you love me?”

Isolde turned toward him.

Gilgamesh became still.

The entire world seemed to stop.

On the other side of the communicator—

Nothing.

Dinraal closed his eyes.

”I mean—”

His voice shook.

”Did you actually—”

”Yes.”

Aurelius answered immediately.

Dinraal stopped.

Aurelius inhaled.

Then his voice came again.

Stronger.

”Yes.”

Dinraal couldn’t speak.

Aurelius continued.

”I loved you.”

Past tense.

The word hurt.

Then Aurelius corrected himself.

”I love you.”

Dinraal’s knees nearly gave out.

Isolde caught him.

Aurelius’s voice was breaking now.

”I have loved you since the first time you grabbed my finger and refused to let go.”

Dinraal stared at nothing.

”I have loved you when you hated me.”

His breath caught.

”I loved you when you believed I killed your father.”

Dinraal’s tears fell.

”I loved you when you looked at me like I was a monster.”

Aurelius’s voice became quieter.

”And I loved you enough to let you.”

Dinraal shook his head.

”No.”

Aurelius stopped.

”No?”

”You don’t get to say that.”

Dinraal’s voice grew stronger.

”You don’t get to decide that hurting me was love.”

Silence.

Then Aurelius whispered—

”You’re right.”

Dinraal stopped.

Aurelius continued.

”I was wrong.”

There was no defense.

No excuse.

Just the truth.

”I was afraid.”

Dinraal listened.

”I thought if you knew how much I cared about you, you would become a target.”

Aurelius laughed bitterly.

”And perhaps you did anyway.”

Dinraal’s fingers tightened around Isolde’s.

”I was a target.”

”I know.”

”I needed you.”

Aurelius went silent.

Dinraal’s voice cracked.

”I hated you.”

”I know.”

”I still don’t know how I feel about you.”

”I know.”

Dinraal swallowed.

Then—

”That’s not fair.”

Aurelius laughed.

A broken, exhausted sound.

”No.”

For several seconds—

Neither spoke.

Then Dinraal looked at Isolde.

She was crying too.

Of course she was.

Her father.

His—

Dinraal couldn’t finish the thought.

Not yet.

Maybe someday.

Aurelius spoke quietly.

”Dinraal.”

He looked toward the communicator.

”Yes?”

”There is something else.”

Dinraal stared.

Gilgamesh groaned.

”No.”

Isolde covered her face.

Dinraal looked upward.

”Why?”

The ancient mother began laughing.

Louder this time.

Aurelius’s voice became serious.

”Because I didn’t give you the name Caelum.”

Dinraal froze.

”What?”

The silver beneath his skin ignited.

Aurelius continued.

”Bahamut did.”

Silence.

Dinraal looked toward Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh looked away.

Dinraal’s eyes widened.

”You knew.”

”I knew there was a name.”

”Gilgamesh.”

”I did not know this part.”

”You’re lying.”

”I am an ancient king. I do not lie.”

Isolde stared at him.

Gilgamesh sighed.

”OK, maybe I knew bits and pieces....”

Dinraal pointed at him.

”I am absolutely hitting you.”

”Get in line.”

Then—

Aurelius’s voice returned.

”Dinraal.”

Everything became quiet again.

”What?”

”Your father gave you two names.”

Dinraal stopped.

The communicator crackled.

Aurelius’s voice lowered.

”One for the world.”

Dinraal’s heart pounded.

”And one for the stars.”

The chamber began to tremble.

Far beneath them—

The ancient mother opened her eye.

And spoke.

AT LAST.

Dinraal stared downward.

Aurelius whispered—

”Caelum.”

The silver exploded.

Light filled the chamber.

Isolde cried out.

Gilgamesh stepped backward.

Dinraal felt something open inside him.

Not power.

Not exactly.

A door.

A memory older than memory.

Stars.

Thousands of them.

A child standing beneath an impossible sky.

Bahamut beside him.

Tiamat on the other side.

Aurelius behind them.

Eve watching from the darkness.

And one sentence—

Spoken by Bahamut.

A sentence Dinraal had never heard.

Until now.

Dinraal Leven Valera VII is the name the world will know.

The memory brightened.

Bahamut smiled down at the child.

But Caelum—

The stars moved.

The universe answered.

—is the name that will bring you home.

Dinraal screamed.

The ancient chamber shattered with silver light.

And somewhere—

Far beyond the planet—

Something answered.

Something that had been waiting.

For a name.

For a signal.

For the Last Silver to remember—

Who he was.

The communicator screamed.

Aurelius’s voice vanished beneath static.

Then—

A new voice came through.

Not Aurelius.

Not Bahamut.

Not Tiamat.

Not Eve.

A woman’s voice.

Ancient.

Terrified.

And impossibly familiar.

”Dinraal?”

Dinraal stopped.

Isolde stared at him.

Gilgamesh went pale.

The ancient mother beneath the world fell silent.

The voice came again.

Closer now.

Crying.

”Dinraal.”

Dinraal’s entire body began to shake.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it in dreams.

In memories.

In the darkness before he was born.

A single word escaped him.

”Mother?”

The communicator went silent.

Then—

Tiamat answered.

”Dinraal.”

His heart broke.

Her voice trembled.

”I found you.”

And somewhere across the stars—

The Last Silver’s mother was alive.
