Aurelius knew Bahamut was dying.

Bahamut knew Aurelius would not hesitate when the moment came.

They had chosen the field.

Chosen the witnesses.

Chosen the story.

Not to save themselves.

But to save the Empire from tearing itself apart.

Dinraal watched his father fall to one knee.

The crowd roared.

Aurelius raised his sword.

Bahamut looked up at him.

For one brief moment—

the battlefield disappeared.

The two men were alone.

Bahamut whispered—

”Dinraal.”

Aurelius’s face broke.

”I know.”

”Keep him safe.”

”I will.”

”Let him choose.”

Aurelius closed his eyes.

”I swear.”

Bahamut smiled.

Then—

”Good.”

Aurelius struck.

Dinraal screamed.

The sound did not leave the memory.

No one could hear him.

He watched his father fall.

Watched the Emperor of the Draec Empire die on the field of battle.

But this time—

he knew.

Bahamut had not been betrayed.

He had chosen this.

With Aurelius.

Two friends.

Two allies.

Two men who understood that the Empire would destroy itself if Bahamut simply faded away in his bed.

So they had given it a death.

A story.

A villain.

And a victor.

The armies erupted.

The future changed.

And Aurelius—

Aurelius stood over Bahamut’s body.

His sword covered in blood.

His face empty.

But Dinraal could see the truth.

He was crying.

Silently.

Where no one would notice.

The memory faded.

Dinraal returned to the chamber.

He couldn’t breathe.

For a long time—

no one spoke.

Then Dinraal whispered—

”Aurelius didn’t murder him.”

Gilgamesh shook his head.

”No.”

”He killed him.”

Dinraal’s eyes filled.

”But Bahamut asked him to.”

Gilgamesh nodded.

”To prevent the Empire from burning itself apart.”

Dinraal looked toward the darkness.

”My father planned his own death.”

The words felt impossible.

Isolde stepped in front of him.

Dinraal looked at her.

”He knew.”

She nodded.

”He knew he was dying.”

”He knew what would happen.”

”Yes.”

Dinraal laughed once.

A broken sound.

”And he still—”

His voice disappeared.

Isolde pulled him into her arms.

Dinraal held her.

For several seconds—

he was not the Last Silver.

Not Bahamut’s heir.

Not Eve’s descendant.

Not the wielder of the Mithril Gaunt.

He was simply a son.

Who had just watched his father die.

Again.

A voice came from the darkness.

Not the ancient mother.

Bahamut.

DINRAAL.

Dinraal froze.

Isolde pulled back.

”Din?”

He turned toward the abyss.

”Father?”

The voice was weak.

Fading.

But there.

THERE IS MORE.

Dinraal’s heart began racing.

Gilgamesh looked toward him.

”What did he say?”

Dinraal swallowed.

”He said there’s more.”

Of course there was.

There was always more.

The ancient mother laughed beneath the world.

OH, LITTLE SILVER.

Dinraal looked downward.

The enormous eye watched him.

YOUR FATHER DID NOT ONLY ARRANGE HIS DEATH.

The chamber trembled.

HE ARRANGED YOUR LIFE AFTER IT.

Dinraal became still.

Isolde looked at him.

”What does that mean?”

The silver beneath Dinraal’s skin began to burn.

The ancient voice answered.

ASK AURELIUS WHY HE CALLED YOU SON.

Silence.

Dinraal stared at the dead communicator.

Then—

it flickered.

Once.

Twice.

A hologram appeared.

Aurelius stood before them.

He looked older than Dinraal remembered.

For once—

he did not look like the Chancellor.

He looked tired.

Isolde whispered—

”Father.”

Aurelius looked at her.

Then at Dinraal.

For a long moment—

he said nothing.

Dinraal stepped forward.

His voice shook.

”Was it true?”

Aurelius closed his eyes.

Dinraal swallowed.

”Did you claim me as your son?”

Aurelius opened his eyes.

And the answer was there before he spoke.

”Yes.”

Dinraal stopped breathing.

”Why?”

Aurelius looked at him.

”Because Bahamut asked me to.”

The chamber went silent.

Aurelius’s voice broke slightly.

”And because I wanted to.”

Dinraal stared.

Aurelius continued.

”When Bahamut died, there were people who wanted to find you.”

Dinraal’s hands curled into fists.

”People who wanted to kill me.”

”Yes.”

”And others who wanted to use you.”

Aurelius nodded.

”So I gave them another answer.”

Dinraal’s voice was barely audible.

”You were my son.”

Aurelius nodded.

”Yes.”

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

She stared at her father.

Then back at him.

Aurelius continued.

”I gave you my name.”

Dinraal went still.

”Not because you belonged to me.”

His voice became firm.

”But because I wanted the Empire to understand something.”

Aurelius looked directly at him.

”If they wanted you—”

The hologram flickered.

”They would have to come through me.”

Dinraal’s breath caught.

Aurelius looked down.

”When you were old enough, I planned to tell you.”

Dinraal laughed bitterly.

”When?”

Aurelius was silent.

Dinraal nodded.

”Right.”

Aurelius’s expression tightened.

”I failed you.”

Dinraal looked away.

”Yes.”

The word hit hard.

Isolde looked between them.

”Din.”

He raised a hand.

”No.”

Aurelius deserved the truth.

Dinraal looked at him.

”You let me believe you killed him.”

Aurelius closed his eyes.

”Yes.”

”You let me hate you.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

Aurelius opened his eyes.

And Dinraal saw the same grief he had seen on the battlefield.

Because Aurelius had carried this too.

All these years.

”Because Bahamut asked me to let you choose who you became.”

Dinraal frowned.

Aurelius continued.

”If I told you too early that I had been protecting you…”

His voice weakened.

”You might have felt you owed me.”

Dinraal stared.

”If I told you what your father wanted…”

Aurelius looked toward the darkness.

”You might have lived your life trying to become him.”

Silence.

”So I became the villain.”

Dinraal’s eyes filled.

Aurelius looked at him.

”I thought you would be safer if you hated me.”

Isolde whispered—

”Father.”

Aurelius looked at her.

Then at Dinraal.

”But I was wrong about one thing.”

Dinraal waited.

Aurelius’s expression broke.

”I thought I could protect you without being part of your life.”

The hologram began to flicker.

Dinraal stepped forward.

”Aurelius.”

The Chancellor looked at him.

For a moment—

neither knew what to say.

Then Dinraal asked the question that had haunted him since childhood.

”Did you ever think of me as your son?”

Aurelius stopped.

Everything stopped.

Even the ancient mother beneath the planet fell silent.

Aurelius looked at Dinraal.

And when he answered—

there was no hesitation.

”Yes.”

Dinraal’s breath caught.

Aurelius continued.

”Not instead of Bahamut.”

His eyes filled.

”Never that.”

He swallowed.

”But there is room in a man’s heart for more than one child.”

Isolde began crying.

Dinraal stared at Aurelius.

The man he had hated.

The man he had blamed.

The man who had stood over his father’s body.

The man who had carried him away afterward.

Who had given him another name.

Hidden his silver.

Protected him from an Empire that wanted to own him.

Dinraal didn’t know what to feel.

Anger.

Grief.

Relief.

Love.

None of it fit together.

Not yet.

Maybe it never would.

But one thing had changed.

Aurelius had not been his enemy.

Not in the way Dinraal had believed.

The hologram flickered again.

Aurelius looked toward Isolde.

Then Dinraal.

”I’m sorry.”

Dinraal closed his eyes.

The words were not enough.

They could never be enough.

But they were real.

When he opened his eyes—

Isolde was beside him.

Her hand found his.

Dinraal looked at Aurelius.

”I don’t forgive you.”

Aurelius nodded.

”I know.”

”But—”

Dinraal stopped.

The word was difficult.

”I understand.”

Aurelius’s expression changed.

Not happiness.

Not forgiveness.

Something quieter.

Something grateful.

”That is more than I expected.”

The connection began to fail.

Static filled the hologram.

Dinraal stepped forward.

”Aurelius.”

The Chancellor looked up.

Dinraal hesitated.

Then—

”Thank you.”

Aurelius went completely still.

The hologram flickered.

Isolde covered her mouth.

For a moment—

Aurelius could not speak.

Then he nodded.

Once.

The connection disappeared.

Dinraal stared at the empty air.

Isolde leaned against him.

”Are you okay?”

Dinraal laughed.

”No.”

She nodded.

”Good.”

He looked at her.

She smiled faintly.

”That would have been worrying.”

Dinraal laughed again.

This time, it hurt less.

He looked at his black hair.

Then toward the silver light beneath the planet.

His hair had not changed because he had lost what he was.

It had changed because someone had given him the chance to survive long enough to decide what he wanted to become.

His father.

His mother.

Eve.

Aurelius.

Even Isolde.

So many people had made choices for him.

Trying to protect him.

Trying to save him.

Trying—

sometimes badly—

to love him.

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

Then toward the stars.

For the first time, the question did not feel like a burden.

Who was he?

Bahamut’s son.

Tiamat’s son.

Eve’s descendant.

Aurelius’s chosen son.

The Last Silver.

All of those things.

And none of them were enough to define him.

Dinraal smiled faintly.

”I guess I still get to choose.”

Isolde squeezed his hand.

”Yes.”

Far beneath them—

the ancient mother laughed.

AT LAST.

The silver beneath Dinraal’s skin burned.

His black hair lifted in the wind.

And for just a moment—

one silver strand appeared among the darkness.

Then another.

Two Majestic Horns unfolded and took their place atop his head like a crown.

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

She smiled.

”You’re changing.”

Dinraal touched the horns.

”Apparently.”

”Are you going to turn completely silver?”

Dinraal considered it.

Then looked at her.

”Do you want me to?”

Isolde smiled.

”Yes.”

”Why?”

She tightened her grip on his hand.

”Because you look hot.”

Together, they turned toward the darkness.

Toward the ancient mother.

Toward the Ashen.

Toward the war waiting beyond the false planet.

Behind them lay the past.

Ahead of them—

everything else.

And Dinraal—

the boy who had spent his life believing his father had been murdered—

finally understood the truth.

Bahamut had not died because he was defeated.

He had died because he had chosen to give his son a future.

And now—

Dinraal intended to decide what he did with it.
