Dinraal’s breath caught.

He almost stepped backward.

The name was different when spoken aloud.

Different when Aurelius stood before him.

Aurelius seemed to realize what he had done.

”I’m sorry.”

Dinraal shook his head.

”No.”

Aurelius stopped.

Dinraal swallowed.

”You don’t have to be sorry.”

Silence.

Aurelius stared at him.

Dinraal looked away.

Then back.

”I don’t know if I’m ready for that.”

Aurelius nodded.

”I understand.”

”But—”

Aurelius waited.

Dinraal looked at him.

”You can call me that.”

Something broke across Aurelius’s face.

Not visibly.

Not completely.

But Dinraal saw it.

The man had spent years refusing himself something as simple as a name.

”All right.”

Dinraal nodded.

For a moment—

Neither knew what to do.

Then Aurelius stepped forward.

Dinraal froze.

Aurelius stopped.

Not touching him.

Waiting.

Dinraal looked at him.

Then—

Slowly—

He stepped forward.

And hugged him.

Aurelius went completely still.

Dinraal’s arms tightened.

For one brief moment—

He was angry.

He was grieving.

He was confused.

But he was also—

A child.

A child who had needed this man.

Aurelius’s arms came around him.

Carefully.

As though Dinraal might disappear.

Dinraal closed his eyes.

Aurelius whispered—

”I’m sorry.”

Dinraal’s throat tightened.

”I know.”

”I’m sorry.”

”I know.”

”I should have—”

Dinraal pulled away.

”No.”

Aurelius stopped.

Dinraal wiped his eyes.

”We’re not doing this here.”

Aurelius almost smiled.

”Fair.”

Dinraal looked toward the horizon.

The Ashen were coming closer.

Then he looked back.

”You came to the gate.”

Aurelius’s expression changed.

”Yes.”

”You were going to stay.”

Silence.

Aurelius looked toward the battlefield.

Dinraal understood.

Of course he was.

The Chancellor had been prepared to remain behind.

To become the last line. To show the Ashen why he was feared across the galaxy.

One more time. The last time.

Dinraal’s voice became quiet.

”Don’t.”

Aurelius looked at him.

Dinraal shook his head.

”Not again.”

The words landed.

Aurelius closed his eyes.

For a moment—

He looked older than he had ever looked.

Then he nodded.

”All right.”

Dinraal smiled faintly.

”Good.”

Aurelius looked toward the ship.

Then back at the group.

His expression changed when he saw Asha.

He froze.

Everyone noticed.

Asha stared at him.

”You.”

Aurelius took one step backward.

Gilgamesh sighed.

”Here we go.”

Dinraal looked between them.

”You know her?”

Aurelius’s eyes remained fixed on Asha.

”No.”

Asha smiled.

”That is disappointing.”

Aurelius’s hand moved toward his weapon.

Dinraal stared.

”Aurelius.”

The Chancellor stopped.

Asha tilted her head.

”You have his eyes.”

Dinraal froze.

”What?”

Aurelius’s face went pale.

Asha looked at him.

Then at Dinraal.

Then—

She laughed.

Gilgamesh covered his face.

”No.”

Dinraal looked at him.

”What?”

Gilgamesh looked toward the sky.

”Not now.”

Dinraal pointed toward him.

”I am going to throw you off this planet.”

”Get in line.”

Asha turned toward Dinraal.

”Your Chancellor is descended from an old friend.”

Aurelius stared.

”What?”

Asha smiled.

”But that is a story for another time.”

Dinraal stared at her.

”No.”

The planet shook.

Asha looked toward the approaching Ashen.

”Unfortunately.”

Another impact.

Closer.

Aurelius’s communicator activated.

”Chancellor!”

Aurelius answered.

”What?”

”Final ship departing in ninety seconds!”

Everyone stopped.

Ninety seconds.

Aurelius looked toward Dinraal.

”Get aboard.”

Dinraal did not move.

Aurelius frowned.

”What?”

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

Then Claire.

Johanna.

Gilgamesh.

Julius.

Cleopatra.

Alexander.

Asha, and her miniature weapon.

Everyone understood.

Aurelius’s expression changed.

”No.”

Dinraal looked at him.

”Aurelius.”

”No.”

The answer was immediate.

”You just found out Tiamat is alive.”

Dinraal nodded.

”And I am going to find her.”

Aurelius stared at him.

”The Ashen are here.”

”I know.”

”You have no idea where she is.”

Dinraal looked toward the communicator.

Then toward the stars.

”No.”

His black hair began to change.

Black fading forever.

Silver taking control.

”But she found me.”

Aurelius became silent.

Dinraal continued.

”And I’m going to find her.”

Isolde stepped forward.

”I’m going too.”

Dinraal looked at her.

He didn’t argue.

Claire stepped forward.

”So am I.”

Johanna nodded.

”Same.”

Gilgamesh sighed.

”Apparently I have no choice.”

Julius Caesar looked toward Cleopatra.

Cleopatra raised an eyebrow.

”Don’t look at me.”

Julius smiled.

”You were coming anyway.”

”Obviously.”

Alexander laughed.

Asha looked toward the ship.

”I require transportation.”

Everyone stared at her.

Asha blinked.

”What?”

Johanna pointed at her.

”You’re getting better at conversations.”

Asha smiled.

”Thank you.”

Aurelius looked at all of them.

Then at Dinraal.

”You can’t all go.”

Dinraal stared.

”Why?”

”Because someone has to lead the evacuation fleet.”

Everyone looked at Aurelius.

Dinraal understood immediately.

”No.”

Aurelius’s expression hardened.

”Dinraal—”

”Caelum.”

Aurelius stopped.

Dinraal took a step forward.

”If you’re going to call me that—”

His voice became quiet.

”—then let me call you something.”

Aurelius stared at him.

Dinraal swallowed.

He had never said it.

Not once.

The word felt too large.

Too dangerous.

Too fragile.

But then—

He remembered.

Goodnight, Caelum.

He remembered being held.

Being protected.

Being loved.

And being hurt.

All of it.

The truth did not erase the pain.

But the pain did not erase the truth.

Dinraal looked directly at Aurelius.

”Father.”

Silence.

Aurelius stopped breathing.

Isolde began crying.

Claire covered her mouth.

Johanna looked away.

Gilgamesh suddenly found the sky extremely interesting.

Julius muttered—

”Well.”

Cleopatra elbowed him.

Alexander smiled.

Asha watched them all.

Dinraal’s voice shook.

”I don’t know what that means yet.”

Aurelius’s eyes filled.

”But I want to find out.”

Aurelius stared at him.

Then Dinraal continued.

”So get on the ship.”

Aurelius looked toward the horizon.

The Ashen advanced.

Then toward Dinraal.

”What are you asking me?”

Dinraal smiled faintly.

”I’m asking you to trust me.”

Aurelius closed his eyes.

The words came back.

Bahamut’s words.

Let him choose.

When Aurelius opened his eyes—

He looked at Dinraal.

Then nodded.

”All right.”

Dinraal breathed out.

Aurelius turned toward the soldiers.

”All remaining personnel!”

His voice carried across the evacuation field.

”BOARD THE SHIPS!”

The final evacuation began.

The last ship rose.

The planet fell away beneath them.

Dinraal stood at the observation window.

Isolde beside him.

Below—

The ancient world disappeared beneath clouds of ash and fire.

The Ashen continued to advance.

But there was no one left for them to kill.

Not here.

Not anymore.

The evacuation was complete.

Millions of lives moved through the darkness.

Aurelius stood behind them.

Dinraal turned.

The Chancellor looked toward the stars.

Then activated the ship’s communications.

”Fleet status.”

A voice answered.

”All civilian transports accounted for.”

Aurelius closed his eyes.

For one moment—

Relief.

Then—

”Set course.”

Dinraal turned toward him.

Aurelius looked at his son.

”Where?”

Dinraal looked toward Asha.

The ancient mother stepped forward.

She had been staring into the darkness beyond the stars.

”Tiamat did not call from nowhere.”

Everyone became silent.

Asha raised one hand.

Stars appeared above her palm.

A map.

Ancient.

Impossible.

Dinraal stared.

A single light pulsed at the edge of known space.

Gilgamesh frowned.

”I know that region.”

Asha looked at him.

”Of course you do.”

Gilgamesh’s expression darkened.

”What is there?”

The ancient mother looked at the light.

Then at Dinraal.

”Nothing.”

Silence.

Claire frowned.

”That doesn’t sound reassuring.”

Asha smiled faintly.

”It should not.”

The light pulsed again.

Dinraal felt it.

A familiar presence.

His silver answered.

Tiamat.

Somewhere beyond the darkness.

Waiting.

Or trapped.

Or running.

Dinraal didn’t know.

But she was alive.

And he was going to find her.

Aurelius turned toward the fleet commander.

”Prepare the search vessel.”

Dinraal looked at him.

Aurelius’s expression hardened.

”You’re not leaving without me.”

Dinraal stared.

Then smiled.

”Father—”

Aurelius pointed at him.

”Do not start.”

Dinraal laughed.

A real laugh.

The first one that did not hurt.

Isolde squeezed his hand.

Claire and Johanna stood beside them.

Gilgamesh complained about ancient navigation systems.

Julius and Cleopatra immediately began arguing over whether he was actually useful.

Alexander watched the stars with the expression of a man who had just discovered a new world to conquer.

Asha stood quietly.

Ancient.

Awake.

Free of the planet that had been her prison for longer than anyone remembered.

Then she spoke.

”Chancellor.”

Aurelius turned.

”Yes?”

”You will remain with the evacuation fleet.”

Silence.

Dinraal frowned.

”What?”

Aurelius looked at Asha.

”Why?”

The ancient mother raised her hand.

The star map changed.

The distant light pulsed.

Then—

Nine paths appeared.

Dinraal stared.

Isolde.

Claire.

Johanna.

Gilgamesh.

Julius Caesar.

Cleopatra.

Alexander.

Asha.

Himself.

Aurelius was not among them.

Dinraal’s heart sank.

Asha looked toward the Chancellor.

”The path to Tiamat cannot carry you.”

Aurelius’s expression hardened.

”Explain.”

Asha looked toward the stars.

”There are doors in this universe.”

Dinraal felt the silver beneath his skin move.

”Doors?”

”Places between places.”

Gilgamesh went silent.

Asha continued.

”Some doors open only for those who are willing to leave everything behind.”

Aurelius looked at Dinraal.

Dinraal understood.

”No.”

Asha looked at him.

”This is not a punishment.”

”It sounds like one.”

”It is a separation.”

Dinraal looked toward Aurelius.

No.

Not now.

They had only just—

Aurelius stepped closer.

Dinraal looked at him.

The Chancellor placed both hands on his shoulders.

”Caelum.”

Dinraal swallowed.

Aurelius smiled sadly.

”Find her.”

Dinraal’s eyes burned.

”What if—”

”Find her.”

Aurelius pulled him into an embrace.

This time—

Dinraal didn’t hesitate.

He held on.

Aurelius whispered—

”Bring your mother home.”

Dinraal closed his eyes.

”I will.”

Behind them—

The stars opened.

A door appeared.

Silver.

Dark.

Endless.

The path to Tiamat.

Dinraal stepped back.

Isolde took his hand.

Claire and Johanna moved behind them.

Gilgamesh walked forward.

Julius and Cleopatra followed.

Alexander smiled toward the impossible horizon.

Asha walked beside Dinraal.

The ancient mother looked toward the Chancellor.

Then nodded once.

Aurelius stood at the edge of the light.

Watching.

Dinraal looked back.

For the first time in his life—

He did not see the man who had killed his father.

He did not see the Chancellor.

He saw Aurelius.

His father.

Not by blood.

Not by inheritance.

By choice.

Dinraal smiled faintly.

”We’ll come back.”

Aurelius’s expression softened.

”I know.”

Dinraal turned.

Together—

They stepped through the door.

The stars vanished.

And somewhere beyond the edge of the known universe—

Tiamat waited.
