High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2485: Chapter 706: The Theory of Unorthodox Paths

”Love is always one of the most mysterious realms in magic.”

In the bookstore’s window, the Yellow Flowered Cat leaned against the window frame, standing on its hind legs, watching the young, cost-conscious student outside giving instructions to the Fox Keeper. It lifted a furry paw, theatrically wiped the corner of its eye, and twitched its tail: ”Besides, youth is great, always full of energy and fantasies... Old man, are you really planning never to see him again?”

It tapped the glass window, Dong Dong, pointing towards Zheng Qing.

The sound dispersed along the window frame without leaking outside.

But inside the window, the flames in the Small Red Clay Stove crackled, the Brass teapot bubbled with boiling water, blending harmoniously with the bookstore owner’s soft snoring.

As if it had heard the Yellow Flowered Cat’s question.

The bookstore owner, still in a dream, turned over, back to the Flower Cat, murmured softly, ”If only you had become a real legend sooner, you wouldn’t be asking such a dumb question...”

If ordinary wizards are drops of water in the river of destiny, big wizards are fish swimming in the river, then legendary wizards are like anglers atop riverbanks or boats, detached from most of destiny’s river streams.

This means they have a broader and higher vision.

In other words, if the Yellow Flowered Cat were still a legend now, it would most likely see the direction ’that drop of water’ Zheng Qing would flow in the future and know whether he and the master would meet again, negating the need to ask ’dumb questions’.

Hearing the master’s dreamy murmur, the Flower Cat seemed pricked in the butt, leaping off the windowsill in a hurry, angrily bounding in front of the bookstore owner, roaring: ”Legend? Oh? A real legend? Who was it that left me behind and ran off? Now blaming me for not being legendary?”

After roaring, it suddenly sat down, lifted a furry paw, covered its eyes, and started sobbing: ”Back in the day, I was a renowned genius cat, only to be deceived by you, becoming the damn ’proxy’, cutting short my future...”

The so-called ’proxy’ refers to wizards who have signed contracts with certain ancient entities in the world, walking in their stead between worlds. Similar to god’s favored ones in some indigenous worlds.

Ordinary proxies, under contract feedback, often possess magic power surpassing their own tier. Powerful proxies can even break the shackles of big wizards, becoming legendary—this ’path of proxy’, collecting faith to ignite divine fire on the ’path of godhood’, and creating extraordinary life on the ’path of ancestry’ all belong to the ’off-path avenues’ in the wizard world, helping wizards with slightly inferior qualifications to achieve legend.

Yellow Flowered Cat once signed a contract with the master and was once a very prestigious legendary Big Cat.

However, as the master surpassed ancient times, gradually transcending the world’s concepts, as His proxy, Yellow Flowered Cat was inevitably affected, with its cultivation falling all the way down to its current state, having become a big wizard.

This is also why it has always been eager for the old man to stop his distant steps, striving to strengthen His connection to the world.

Listening to the Flower Cat humming and hawing behind, the bookstore owner finally couldn’t help it, sat up, picked up the glasses nearby and wore them, rubbed his temples, full of helplessness.

”You’ve never been a genius cat.”

The master first corrected the Yellow Flowered Cat’s misunderstanding of itself and then advised: ”Moreover, I’ve said it many times before, your cultivation has only temporarily fallen. Walking the path once more, could there really be any difficulty?”

Seeing the master respond to it, the Flower Cat immediately stopped crying.

”You just said, I’m not a genius.” It self-deprecatingly mocked itself: ”More than just not a genius, I’m a fool! How can a fool remember a path walked only once?”

The master squinted his eyes, glancing at him: ”Fools wouldn’t admit they are fools. I remember someone said, ’Among all human habits, only laziness surpasses stupidity’...”

”Like the wizards at First University?” the Flower Cat interjected.

”Hmm?”

”Like at First University, where the school wizards are still using the guardian array set up hundreds of years ago, patching it up without the courage to tear down and rebuild. That’s why last year the school became a leaky fence, letting all sorts of bugs get in and out.”

Yellow Flowered Cat commented pretentiously, as if discussing the management problems of First University with the master from the beginning: ”...it’s hard to say which choice is worse, or rather, it’s hard to say whether they are lazy or stupid.”

The bookstore owner looked at it with a faint smile, didn’t continue, and carried on: ”...although you’re not a genius cat, you’re not a fool either. Based on the materials you embezzled in the past, even if I leave completely, you can maintain the complete big wizard true form... plus you’ve already acquired a very real ’legendary reputation’, as long as you recall some of the insights you gained at the legendary rank, the path back won’t have any obstacles...”

”Speaking of ’legendary reputation’,” Yellow Flowered Cat sat cross-legged, hugged its arms, and thoughtfully glanced towards North Beita Town: ”...how about I become the Dean of Edge Academy? I think my reputation should be sufficient!”

”Hmm?” the master frowned again.

”I mean, if I become the Dean of Edge Academy, those old folks arguing in the school might quiet down for a while.”

Yellow Flowered Cat seemed worried that the bookstore owner would misunderstand and quickly explained: ”This while, you’ve just been sleeping, not seeing how lively it is outside the window... Old Yao and Emma, Jiuyou and Alpha, the Great Wizard Conference and the School Works Committee, Danghag and the Trident Sword, the Moon Council and the Wizard Council... yeesh, it’s a complete mess, every faction thinks their candidate deserves to be the Dean of Edge Academy!”

The master squinted and couldn’t help but glance outside the window.

Just a glance.

A thoughtful expression appeared on his face: ”The delay in appointing the Dean of Edge Academy is not due to ordinary interest conflicts. More because that position is akin to a ’legendary seed’. A young witch overcoming numerous difficulties to send a group of kids from the fringes into First University... this seemingly ordinary yet nearly impossible feat, is a seed named ’legendary’, spreading among groups of wizards, developing into a powerful legend, becoming the spiritual belief of all those on the edges... this seed will eventually grow into a towering tree, helping her climb from the ground to the sky. But reality isn’t a fairy tale, many do not want that fortunate girl to continue being fortunate, if she becomes dean, she will naturally gain a touch of legendary color...”

The words stopped abruptly.

The master irritably withdrew his gaze, happened to see the Yellow Flowered Cat with a face like it had just stolen some dried fish.

”Catty tactics... you think this will make me stop my steps?” The bookstore owner scoffed lightly, grabbed a book from the side, covered his face with it, and refused to speak further.

”I see!”

Yellow Flowered Cat, as if not hearing the master’s rhetorical question, wore a suddenly enlightened expression following that long lecture, then determinedly, firmly patted its furry chest with its paw, righteously declared: ”Don’t worry, I don’t lack that seed... will never snatch a little girl’s lollipop!”
