Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 1356: Chapter 1357: I’ll Go Alone

He saluted Chiang Xiao.

”Please get in the car.”

Chiang Xiao got in the car, and after another bumpy fifteen minutes, they reached the guard post.

”The Officer made a call, telling us you were coming alone, so we’ve been waiting here, calculating the time. We expected you around now, so I sent Shao Yingqiang to pick you up.”

”Gong Xinhe, is the neighboring army still not allowing our troops to cross over?”

”Yes, they are unwilling!”

Chiang Xiao lowered her voice and asked, ”Then if I want to go by myself, where can I avoid detection?”

Gong Xinhe was alarmed, ”Sister-in-law, you want to sneak across alone?”

”There’s no more time to wait.”

Gong Xinhe gritted his teeth, ”I understand, I’ll take you there later, but please, Sister-in-law, take me with you!”

”No, I’ll go alone. Also, there’s no need to wait. Once we get off the car, don’t take me to the command center, take me directly across.” She didn’t want to go to the command center to make a call any longer; gaining even a slight bit of time was good.

The thought that Meng Xinian and his team had already been missing for seven days made it impossible for her to sit still.

It was fortunate that Gong Xinhe came to pick her up. Yang Zhiqi probably worried about her coming here alone, getting lost in unfamiliar territory. Having someone familiar with the place made things much better.

”Shao Yingqiang, stop here, stop.” Gong Xinhe cried out immediately. ”I’ll take Sister-in-law to see the places our Officer used to frequent first.”

”Alright, just be careful then.” Shao Yingqiang let them out and gave Chiang Xiao another glance before driving back to the post.

From here, the guard station was still several hundred meters away.

The surroundings were all dull and gray, unlike the lush green mountains with verdant trees, and wildflowers and fruits everywhere that Chiang Xiao had seen before.

The mountains here were all dull gray; if not gray-white rocks, then it was gray-white trees with brambles all over.

Such mountains were also poor in resources.

And besides them, there were hardly any signs of human life.

Staying here long-term was truly hard.

Thinking that Meng Xinian had lived here for the better part of half a year, Chiang Xiao couldn’t help but feel heartache.

While the youth in the city were starting to be influenced by foreign trends, beginning to perm their hair, wear bell-bottom jeans, sport big-toed leather shoes, and carry boomboxes to dance with, these most beloved people still, year after year, day after day, stood watch over the nation’s peace in such places.

They did not know what trends were, did not know what ballroom dancing was, far removed from the bright lights and bustle of the cities.

They held on to their convictions, forever in their crisp Supervisor Guard uniforms, standing straight and tall.

”Sister-in-law, follow me.”

Gong Xinhe gestured and ran towards a small path ahead.

Chiang Xiao quickly followed.

Both sides of the small path were covered with thorn bushes, some growing very high, which could easily cut someone if not careful.

But both Chiang Xiao and Gong Xinhe were agile and ran swiftly.

Soon, Chiang Xiao saw a tall wire fence ahead.

The wire fence was covered in iron spike harrows.

Gong Xinhe climbed up a slightly raised mound, looking a bit worried at Chiang Xiao. He lowered his voice and said, ”Sister-in-law, we have to jump over it, do you think you can manage? Step on my hands. Previously, it was the Officer who boosted us over, and he was the last one to make it.”

Chiang Xiao looked at the two-meter-tall wire fence and nodded her head.

”I can.”

Gong Xinhe was still worried, ”One careless move and you could get cut, you need to protect your face especially.”

Their skin was tough and they could handle cuts, but Chiang Xiao couldn’t.
