Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 1354: Chapter 1355: Devoted Protection

On the road, Chiang Xiao had already spent three days.

This place was truly too remote, too barren.

And at every station, when it was time to change buses, she would make three phone calls. The first naturally was to Yang Zhiqi, to ask if there was any news about Meng Xinian and the others. Each time, she held great hope, but each time, the answer she received was negative.

”The other side is still searching, they haven’t found them.”

”The neighboring forces say, our side cannot send people across the border for the time being.”

Chiang Xiao once became so agitated she almost smashed the phone.

The second call was to report her safety back to Huaming County.

The third call was to Kuang Yunxian, as she had promised to call him.

”Brother Kuang, I estimate that it will be difficult to find a phone to call you once I move forward, unless I’m at the Supervisor Guard Outpost. Even if I’m there, I might not call, so if I don’t call after this, you don’t need to worry.”

”Xiao Chiang, the Meng Family already knows about Xinian’s disappearance. Old Meng called Officer Yang, and knowing that I went to the Alliance District with you at the time, he found me, and asked me to relay a message to you: if you make another call, make sure to return one, so they won’t worry,” Kuang Yunxian said.

Chiang Xiao was silent for a moment, ”Brother Kuang, I understand.”

After hanging up, Chiang Xiao still made a call to the Meng Family.

The phone was picked up almost immediately after just one ring, and Old Meng’s anxious voice came through: ”Hello, is that Little? Or is it Yang Zhiqi?”

Was he constantly sitting by the phone waiting?

”It’s me.”

”Little! Little, where have you reached? Are you all right?”

Chiang Xiao reported a place name.

Old Meng felt a warmth in his eyes.

That was a very remote small town already, beyond which lie sparsely populated wild mountains and wilderness.

Chiang Xiao, a young girl, was single-mindedly rushing towards the border for Meng Xinian.

They had once harbored some resentment towards Meng Xinian, and although it wasn’t openly displayed, it actually manifested in their negligence and lack of protection for Chiang Xiao.

Because of her, Meng Xinian was even harsher towards them, towards the Meng Family members, not sparing any feelings. He was only thinking of protecting Chiang Xiao, only concerned when she was wronged, completely disregarding the fact that his surname was Meng, that they were his own father and grandfather.

Moreover, without a second word, he had transferred the Meng Family’s ancestral home to Chiang Xiao’s name.

But now Old Meng suddenly understood.

His grandson treated Chiang Xiao this way because Chiang Xiao also treated him the same, the two protecting each other wholeheartedly. As a grandfather, shouldn’t he be happy?

After hearing that Chiang Xiao, who was supposed to be preparing for her college entrance exams, had put everything aside, defeated six members of the Alliance District team, convinced Yang Zhiqi, and was rushing to the border, not only was he silenced, but even Meng Chaojun, undergoing chemotherapy in the hospital, was quiet.

They were not as good as Chiang Xiao, not as courageous as her!

”Little, you, you have to be careful, your first priority is to protect yourself,” Old Meng’s lips trembled, and his hand holding the phone shook.

Xinian had been missing for seven days now.

In fact, they all knew what it would mean to be missing for seven days in the desolate mountains infested with snakes and insects. Even he had already prepared himself psychologically.

But Chiang Xiao went without hesitation.

”I understand. I understand, Grandpa, I’m leaving.” Chiang Xiao did not say more and quickly hung up to catch the bus.

From here to the border guard outpost was another two-hour bus ride.

The road was rough, the journey so bumpy that it almost shook everything out of one’s stomach.
