Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 850: Chapter 851: Even Sweet Potatoes are Snatched

Chiang Xiao didn’t know how to address the issue with him.

Given Tyrant Meng’s behavior these past two days, she was certain that if she spoke to him about it, he would get angry.

Still undecided, Chiang Songhai and the others returned. She quickly went out to help carry things inside, which also prevented the topic from continuing. Until the evening when she was supposed to pick up Old Meng with Chu Liang, there still hadn’t been an opportunity to bring it up.

When Old Meng got off the train it was already two in the morning, and this was actually early. It was supposed to make a twenty-minute stop en route, but this was canceled, so it arrived more than twenty minutes ahead of schedule.

It was also very cold in Capital City at this time, but the cold in City M was bone-chilling, creeping into one’s bones relentlessly.

There were quite a few people getting off at this station, a good twenty or thirty people surged out.

Old Meng, carrying a black travel bag, stood somewhat bewildered at the train station.

At that moment, a cart was pushed over and a sweet fragrance invaded his nostrils.

Baked sweet potatoes?

Old Meng was immediately attracted.

He had left early in the morning today and discovered that Meng Chaojun hadn’t come home yet.

He hadn’t returned all night.

If it weren’t for Aunt Guo, he might well have died at home without anyone knowing.

Without thinking, he knew it was that daughter-in-law of his who had run back to her parents’ home again, and his useless son must have followed her.

When he left, one of Meng Xinian’s friends had bought him a bag of buns and a can of mixed congee, but after riding the train for a whole day and night, those foods were long gone, not even enough for three meals.

And he didn’t have anything to eat at his usual late-night snack time in the evening.

At this point, Old Meng was extremely hungry.

How could he resist baked sweet potatoes when he saw them?

He immediately stepped forward with his bag and said to the vendor selling the baked sweet potatoes, ”Fellow townsman, give me two baked sweet potatoes!”

”Uncle, perfect timing, I’ve got only two left.”

The vendor had originally planned to take these last two home to eat himself. It was really too cold, and he had stayed for this last train. After it arrived, seeing everyone leaving the station in a hurry, he thought nobody was interested in buying anymore.

Encountering Old Meng, he was quite pleased.

Better to eat less himself and make an extra bit of money.

He had just put the sweet potatoes in a bag and was handing them to Old Meng when suddenly someone rushed over and snatched the two baked sweet potatoes.

”I’m starving to death, let me have these two first! They’re fifty cents each, right?” The man said while tossing a dollar bill, turning away and ready to peel open the baked sweet potatoes.

Smelling that sweet aroma, Old Meng’s hunger became even harder to bear.

He had just passed out from dizziness the night before and had been on the train all day, already not in the best of spirits. The buns and mixed congee he ate were cold, and now he was hoping for something warm to fill his stomach, to both warm his body and lift his spirits.

He hadn’t expected even the baked sweet potatoes to be snatched from him.

Old Meng was not a man known for his good temperament. Seeing this, he was furious. He grabbed the two sweet potatoes back and yelled, ”Do you not understand the concept of first come, first served? I was buying these, what are you snatching for?”

The man was wearing a blue cotton-padded jacket and a cotton hat, looking as if his nose was red from the cold. Just when he was about to bite into the sweet potatoes, Old Meng grabbed them back, which made him angry as well.

After seeing clearly that it was an old man and that he was alone, his audacity surged.

”You old thing, you say these are yours? Did you pay for them?”
