Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 849: Chapter 850: Retreat at Every Step

His room displayed her self-portrait, the implication couldn’t be more obvious.

Chiang Xiao pretended not to hear.

She was fitting a pillowcase for Meng Xinian, and after she had put it on, she shook it out and placed it on the bed, then went to fetch him a quilt.

”So, everything’s actually ready, isn’t it?” Meng Xinian watched her bustling about, barely holding back a smile as he exposed her ruse. All that talk about letting him furnish things later, but it seemed everything was already there.

Chiang Xiao continued to pretend she couldn’t hear, and after making the bed, she gave him a glare, ”I’ve noticed you’ve been talking more and more lately!”

He wasn’t such a talkative person before, but now he really enjoyed busting her chops.

Meng Xinian looked at her, just looked at her steadily, without saying a word.

Before long, Chiang Xiao succumbed under his deep gaze.

Meng Xinian laughed softly, ”You see, if I talk too much it’s no good, if I don’t talk it’s still no good, what do you want me to do?”

She wanted to bite him.

Chiang Xiao beat a hasty retreat, immediately turning and leaving the room.

”It’s already very late, rest early. You don’t have to get up early tomorrow, you haven’t had a good rest in so long, you should make up for it,” she said, then closed the door to his room for him.

Back in her own room, Chiang Xiao closed the door, touching her burning face, her heart pounding.

Is this what love is?

So, she and Chen Liting had never actually dated before!

Chen Liting had never made her feel this way, in fact, she even felt a bit nauseated by his honeyed words.

Back then, she felt that men who spoke like that weren’t good people, it all seemed so hypocritical and false.

But now, no matter what Meng Xinian said, her heartbeat would become irregular and her face would turn red with embarrassment.

Perhaps because the person in question was residing in a room very close to her own, both Meng Xinian and Chiang Xiao slept extremely well that night.

Meng Xinian even slept in, which was a rare occurrence for him.

By the time he got up, the sunlight was just right, warm and pleasant.

Upon opening the door, he found a small note attached to it, with a line of words: ”Don’t rush when you come downstairs, be careful!”

Then, at the bottom, there was a drawing of a little girl pretending to be tough, hands on hips. She looked cute, beautiful, and amusing all at once.

Meng Xinian couldn’t help but smile at the corners of his lips, carefully tucking the little note into his drawer.

Going upstairs was no issue for him, and going downstairs was even easier.

Chiang Songhai and Ge Liutao didn’t quite understand why he insisted on staying upstairs with a leg injury, but seeing him descend the stairs on one foot with ease, they let it be.

They were happy to hear that Old Meng was coming.

”It’s the New Year, the more the merrier, it’s good to have a lively atmosphere!” Ge Liutao said.

Chiang Songhai felt a hint of excitement at the prospect of seeing an old friend.

Back in the day, he and Meng Donghai had arranged child betrothals for their grandchildren, yet they hadn’t seen each other for many years.

In this excitement and anticipation, they took Chu Liang out for an entire day of shopping, buying lots of decorations, New Year flowers, oranges, candies, and other festive items.

Ge Liutao even bought several bolts of fabric, planning to find time over the next few days to sew a new garment for each person, to wear for the New Year.

When they left, only Meng Xinian and Chiang Xiao were in the house.

Chiang Xiao painted while Meng Xinian read a copy of ”Romance of the Three Kingdoms” beside her, glancing at her from time to time.

”Little, have you thought about buying a car?”

”What do I need a car for?” Chiang Xiao jumped at his question. Wasn’t this leaping too far ahead? She already had two properties; buying a car on top of that, wouldn’t that be too ostentatious?

”It would be convenient for you to go out. Plus, every day to and from school, Chu Liang could give you a ride.”

Chiang Xiao was suddenly startled, realizing that Meng Xinian didn’t know she was attending high school in the county town!
