ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

The fall of the Dreadfort moved through the eastern North like a blizzard.

Ramsay Bolton’s head on a stake, the flayed banners pulled down, the castle renamed Oath Keep, the garrison spared if it surrendered and judged if it had butchered. The message was plain enough for even proud men to understand. The age of Bolton was over. Anyone still clinging to it would not be treated as confused. They would be treated as part of the rot.

Karhold heard the message clearly.

That did not make it easier to accept.

Lord Alfie Karstark sat in his council chamber beneath smoke-dark rafters and a ceiling too low for the weight inside the room. Firewood burned in the hearth, precious and insufficient. The flames could warm hands. They could not warm pride, fear, or the knowledge that every road now led toward surrender in one form or another.

Three letters lay open on the table before him.

The first came from Winterfell in the name of Lord Bran Stark, written in Maester Luwin’s hand. It named House Karstark’s crimes after the Red Wedding: broken oaths, alliance with Bolton, resistance against the lawful Warden of the North, and participation in the battle at Moat Cailin. It demanded that Alfie bind himself, surrender command, yield Karhold, and travel to Winterfell to stand judgment. Refusal would make him an enemy of the North.

The second came from the camp outside Oath Keep.

Arthur Greyoak’s letter was gentler. That made it more dangerous. It admitted House Karstark had been coerced and misled by Bolton, though not innocently. It offered a path: surrender arms, hand over Bolton remnants and stolen goods, provide men and supplies for the war beyond the Wall, and old grievances would not be pursued until the greater enemy was dealt with. Karhold and most Karstark lands would remain under Alfie’s temporary management until a final settlement after the war.

The third was not a letter but a report.

Allied scouts were within a day’s march southwest of Karhold. Outposts were being raised. Roads were being cleared. Men from Oath Keep were speaking of Ramsay’s failed night raid, his capture, and his execution. The morale of Karhold’s garrison had sunk like a stone in a frozen pond.

Alfie’s fingers tapped the armrest.

Click. Click. Click.

His eldest son, Cregan, could not bear the silence.

“We cannot hesitate,” he said. He was tall, young, and shaped like his father without the years that taught caution. “Winterfell wants our deaths. That crippled boy is a puppet of Luwin and the Stark loyalists. If we go to Winterfell, House Karstark ends.”

Robett Karstark, the second son, spoke more slowly. “And Greyoak’s terms? They sound lenient, but he wants our soldiers, stores, Bolton prisoners, and obedience. We would be at his mercy. And what of Uncle Rickard? Robb Stark killed him. Are we to pretend that blood has dried?”

“Robb Stark is dead,” Cregan snapped. “So is Ramsay. So is Roose. So are half the men who thought pride would save them. Karhold is what remains. We should consider keeping it.”

“By becoming dogs under a lord from the Westerlands?”

“Better a living dog than Ramsay’s head on a stake.”

The hall broke into argument.

Some officers wanted to fight. Karhold had walls, stores, and winter. The allied army had marched far and would struggle to maintain a siege. The North had defeated southern armies before. Men loved old examples when new facts were inconvenient.

Others wanted peace. They had seen Moat Cailin. They had heard of the Dreadfort. Karhold had lost nearly three thousand of the eight thousand men Alfie took to battle. No more than five thousand fit men remained, and many of those had no appetite for another fight against Arthur’s army. Walls mattered. So did the men standing on them. A wall held by frightened soldiers was only a delay.

Alfie listened.

He remembered his brother Rickard’s execution by Robb Stark. He remembered the shame, the rage, the break with Winterfell. That wound remained. But Robb was dead. House Stark was broken, held together by a crippled child, old loyalties, and necessity. Kneeling to Bran and Luwin, going bound to Winterfell like a criminal, would finish what Moat Cailin had begun.

He would not do it.

The Dreadfort path was gone. Bolton was dead. Ramsay’s name was now a warning, not a shield.

That left Arthur Greyoak.

The foreign lord. The man with gold, armies, discipline, and the cold nerve to spare enemies when useful. Alfie did not like him. Liking was a luxury, and he was too old to pretend otherwise.

“Enough.”

The room fell quiet.

Alfie stood.

“We open the gates.”

Several men began to protest. Alfie silenced them with one look.

“We do not surrender to Winterfell.”

The room stilled again.

“We surrender to Lord Arthur Greyoak.”

Robett stared. “Father...”

Alfie picked up Arthur’s letter.

“Karhold will hand over the Bolton remnants, stolen wealth, and documents. We will provide men and supplies for the war beyond the Wall. But we will not bind ourselves to Winterfell and wait for judgment from Stark loyalists who still dream of Robb’s crown.”

“That is treason,” one old officer murmured.

Alfie laughed without humor. “Everything is treason if the wrong man wins.”

No one answered that. It was too accurate to be comfortable.

“I will go to Greyoak’s camp myself,” Alfie said. “Not as a beaten criminal. As a lord seeking terms. If he wants our men against the dead, he will need more than our heads.”

Cregan’s expression sharpened with relief.

Robett looked less certain, which spoke better of him.

“Cregan,” Alfie said, “choose one hundred of our best guards. Bring my token. Load the crates of gold and jewels taken from Bolton. Gifts, payment, restitution. Call it whatever makes men sleep.”

“Yes, Father.”

“Robett, you hold Karhold. Keep the gates closed until I return. Strengthen the walls, but do not provoke the allied scouts. Anyone stirring panic or calling for a foolish attack will face family law.”

Robett bowed his head.

Before dawn, Karhold’s gates opened.

Alfie Karstark rode out not in sackcloth, but in his best mail, a wolf-fur cloak over his shoulders and the bronze helm of his house beneath his arm. One hundred guards followed him, fully armed and silent. Behind them came wagons bearing chests of coin, jewels, ledgers, and whatever else might purchase survival from the jaws of consequence.

The allied scouts saw them before they reached the outer camp.

No one stopped them. That was almost worse. They were expected.

Cavalry from the Westerlands guided them through the lines. Alfie watched as they rode. The camp was guarded, ordered, and alive with purpose. Battanian troops moved in disciplined groups. Riverlanders tended horses and supply wagons. Northerners carried timber and tools. Smith’s men inspected road maps. No one looked like a force preparing to collapse in winter.

Alfie’s last comfortable illusion died there.

At the command tent, two rows of Battanian Oathkeepers stood still as carved wood. Their eyes followed him without expression.

“Lord Alfie Karstark of Karhold requests audience with Lord Arthur Greyoak,” Alfie announced.

Smith emerged a moment later.

“Lord Arthur is waiting.”

Alfie left his guards outside and entered alone.

Inside, Arthur Greyoak sat on a plain campaign chair before a map of the North. He wore dark leather armor, not court finery. His sword rested at his side. Several commanders stood near the table. Arthur looked up and waited.

No pressure. No arrogance.

That was worse too. Alfie had seen young victors eager to enjoy submission. Arthur looked like a man hearing another report.

Alfie lowered himself to one knee.

“Lord Arthur Greyoak, Lord of Casterly Rock. I, Alfie Karstark, Lord of Karhold, swear allegiance to you in the name of House Karstark.”

The tent went silent.

Smith’s eyebrow rose.

Arthur watched him for several breaths.

“Rise, Lord Alfie,” he said at last. “Karhold’s choice to abandon Bolton and fight the greater enemy is wise. I accept your allegiance.”

Alfie stood, careful not to show too much relief.

“However,” Arthur said, “allegiance is not smoke. It must take shape.”

“Name your terms, my lord.”

“First, Karhold will surrender every remaining Bolton officer, agent, prisoner, and servant of note. All records, letters, and wealth taken through Bolton’s alliance will be counted and handed over.”

“Yes.”

“Second, Karhold’s forces will be reorganized under coalition command. Fit men will join the Northern Campaign. The rest will return to local defense, farming, road work, or supply duty.”

Alfie’s jaw tightened.

That was military power. Not all of it, but enough.

“Yes.”

“Third,” Arthur said, voice steady, “your grievance with House Stark is a northern matter. It will not be settled now. While we fight the enemy beyond the Wall, House Karstark will maintain peace with Winterfell. No provocation. No secret undermining. No old vengeance dressed as strategy. All military action goes through unified command.”

Alfie lowered his head.

“And after the war?”

“After the war, the North can decide its future with those who survive to speak for it.”

It was not what Alfie wanted.

It was better than he had expected.

“I swear by my house and the old gods,” Alfie said, “that while we fight the common enemy, House Karstark will obey your command, keep peace with Winterfell, and support the Northern Campaign.”

Arthur nodded.

“Then welcome, Lord Alfie. Your men and supplies will matter. A quartermaster will see to the details.”

Alfie bowed and withdrew.

When he stepped back into the cold, his back was damp with sweat. He had lost freedom, pride, and a portion of command. In exchange, House Karstark had survived.

In Westeros, that counted as a good bargain often enough to shame the world.
