ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

The Mud Gate was never meant to be glorious.

It stood low in the city wall, near stink, mud, and the kind of streets no lord painted on his maps unless he needed to collect taxes from them. Its stones were old. Its iron fittings had been neglected. The ditch before it held more refuse than water. Men defended it because gates needed men, not because any commander with choices would have chosen them.

Stannis had chosen it.

That made the difference.

His ships concentrated their engines on the gate and the wall around it. Stones crashed into weathered blocks. Heavy bolts tore through wooden screens and shielded platforms. Fire jars burst across parapets. Green flame crawled along old timber and made men scream when water failed to kill it. Melisandre stood on the prow of Fury with both hands raised, speaking words that seemed to pull heat from the morning itself. Whether she worked true sorcery or merely chose a good moment for theater, several balls of fire arced toward the wall and burst among the defenders.

That was enough for the frightened.

Men did not need certainty to run. A rumor of magic usually did the work.

The defenders were poor material. Some were newly raised Gold Cloaks. Others were conscripted smallfolk, criminals promised pardon, and household men with spears shoved into their hands. Their officers shouted for order, and order answered with its usual speed in a city under attack: slowly, resentfully, and not where needed.

Then the accidents began.

The main winch failed when the gate was halfway down. The iron chain jerked, screamed, and locked in place, leaving a gap wide enough for desperate men to exploit. A Tyrell knight commanding the section took an arrow in the shoulder from behind the line. He fell screaming, and no one knew who had shot. A group of defenders pointed toward a collapsed stretch of old stone and shouted that rebels were already climbing there. Whether they meant to help, lie, or survive became irrelevant. Men heard breach, and fear supplied the rest.

Outside the wall, Stannis’s soldiers saw the opening.

“The breach!” someone cried. “The gate is open!”

They surged forward.

Ladders struck stone. Shields rose overhead. Men climbed through arrows, falling stones, fire, and filth. Several died in the gap, crushed between the gate and bodies pressing from behind. Others crawled over them. Faith did not make men immortal, but it made them more willing to spend other men’s bodies as steps.

The first red god men came over the wall before the Tyrell reinforcements arrived.

After that, the Mud Gate was lost.

Stannis’s soldiers poured through the gap and into the lower streets, dragging the battle behind them like a spreading fire. The first alleys beyond the wall became a knot of blades, smoke, mud, blood, and screaming horses. Tyrell men rushed in from the city side, forming shield lines where the streets widened. Gold Cloaks fought beside them, some bravely, some because running deeper into King’s Landing offered no comfort.

Flea Bottom swallowed the fight next.

The slum turned battle into something uglier. Narrow lanes split formations. Roofs leaned over streets. Doors opened and closed. Desperate residents hid, fled, stabbed, looted, or guided men they thought would pay. Stannis’s soldiers tried to push uphill toward the Red Keep, but the city did not allow clean movement. King’s Landing was a nest of alleys built by men who had clearly hated future armies.

Davos led his feint at the docks with grim efficiency. He struck barricades, burned warehouses, and kept enough pressure on the Tyrell commanders that they could not strip the harbor defenses fully. It cost men. Everything cost men. Davos understood that better than most lords. Lords spent lives like coin and then complained when the purse grew light.

Stannis drove from the Mud Gate.

For a few hours, his gamble looked almost like genius.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Then King’s Landing began doing what large cities did best. It absorbed men and killed them slowly.

Tyrell reserves arrived from the inner streets. Gold Cloak companies gathered under officers who had stopped panicking. Mercenaries hired by Mace joined the fighting around key crossings. Barricades rose behind Stannis’s advance. Archers took windows. Hot oil and stones came from upper floors. Every courtyard had to be cleared, every lane watched, every corner paid for.

By midday, the attack had split into three bloody wedges.

One pushed through Flea Bottom toward the Street of Flour. Another tried to hold the gate and widen the breach. Davos’s men still fought near the docks, unable to advance far and too committed to withdraw cleanly. The city rang with bells and war horns, and smoke turned the sun into a pale coin.

In the Tower of the Hand, Joffrey raged.

He smashed a cup against a wall, cursed Stannis, cursed the Tyrells, cursed his guards, and demanded to be taken to the walls where everyone could see their king. No one obeyed. That was one of the signs the city still had a few useful men left.

“My king,” a Tyrell officer said carefully, “your presence is safest here. The rebels hope to reach you.”

“Then let them come!” Joffrey snapped. “I will have Stannis’s head on a spike. I will have them all burned. Where is my mother?”

The men looked at one another.

That did not improve his mood.

In Maegor’s Holdfast, Cersei received reports with a face calm enough to frighten the women around her. The Mud Gate had fallen. Tyrell men were dying in the lower city. Stannis had not reached the Red Keep. Oberyn remained in contact with Tyrell agents and had sent no direct answer. Mace was panicking, ordering reinforcements, counterorders, and requests for more time, as though time was a servant he could summon with enough puffed dignity.

Cersei smiled only once, and not kindly.

The game was still dangerous. Too dangerous. If Stannis reached Joffrey, everything ended. If the Tyrells crushed him too cleanly, they would claim the city’s salvation and tighten their grip around her son. She needed both wounded. She needed fear, blame, and enough ruin to make men desperate for a Lannister hand.

Desperate men were easier to guide. Or push.

She sent word through servants, captains, and bought mouths. The Mud Gate had failed because Tyrell commanders neglected it. Tyrell men had abandoned their positions. Tyrell arrogance had left the city exposed. The queen mother remained calm while Reachmen blundered. The king was safe because loyal men protected him, not because Mace Tyrell could tell a gate from a dinner plate.

The rumors began spreading before sunset.

Rumor moved faster than ravens and required less feeding.

By night, King’s Landing burned in patches. The docks smoked. Flea Bottom had become a warren of ambushes and dead men. Stannis held the Mud Gate and several streets beyond it, but his men were exhausted, scattered, and far from the Red Keep. Tyrell and Gold Cloak forces pressed from three sides. Davos sent two messages urging caution. Melisandre sent one urging speed.

Stannis read both.

Speed had brought him into the city. Caution might get him out alive. Justice, annoyingly, required both at different times.

He did not retreat.

Not yet.

For three days, the battle chewed the city.

Stannis’s men fought like fanatics and died like men. The Tyrells bled heavily retaking lanes and houses. Gold Cloaks learned, relearned, and forgot discipline depending on who was watching. Flea Bottom’s residents stole from corpses before the bodies cooled. Septons called for calm. Nobody listened. Calm was one of those virtues praised most loudly by people not standing near axes.

Stannis never reached Joffrey.

The Red Keep remained held by heavy Tyrell forces, royal guards, and men Cersei had quietly placed where they could see more than they fought. Joffrey survived the danger, though he did manage to order several counterattacks that killed more of his own men than rebels. No one told him that in those words. Kings disliked accuracy when it wounded their vanity.

The turning point came when the vanguard of the Reach fleet appeared at the mouth of the Blackwater.

Stannis’s retreat route was no longer merely threatened in theory.

Davos came to him with the news at dawn, face drawn and voice low. “Your Grace, if the Reach ships close the bay, we lose the fleet.”

Stannis looked toward the smoke-wrapped city. “And if we stay?”

Davos did not answer at once. He was too loyal to say despair easily and too honest to hide it.

“If we stay, we may yet take streets. Not the city. Not today.”

Melisandre’s flames had flickered strangely through the night. Her certainty had not vanished, but it had bent. That was enough. Stannis could tolerate defeat. He could not tolerate annihilation. Dead claimants were rarely persuasive.

He gave the order to withdraw.

The retreat was bitter and disciplined where it could be, ugly where it could not. The badly wounded were abandoned if they could not be moved. Supplies were burned. Rearguards held alleys long enough for ships to take men aboard. Davos oversaw the loading near the docks under arrow fire. Stannis was among the last to board Fury.

By the time the fog thickened over the river, the remaining fleet had pulled away from King’s Landing.

It left behind ashes, corpses, wounded men, abandoned priests of the Lord of Light, burned ships, shattered gates, and a city that had survived by losing enough blood to remember the taste.

Stannis sailed northeast, toward Dragonstone and whatever strength still answered him. Some whispered he would look north next, where old gods, cold lands, and desperate houses might offer new chances. Stannis was not done. Men like him rarely were. The world had to kill them properly before they stopped making claims.

King’s Landing did not celebrate.

It smoldered.
