ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

The Bolton-Karstark line broke before it understood the shape of its own defeat.

From the front, the coalition shield walls advanced with the slow pressure of a millstone. From the rear, Smith’s heavy infantry came down in hard order, crossbows firing over their shoulders whenever the enemy tried to rally. On both flanks, Kator and Beland’s light infantry struck in sudden bursts, javelins first, axes second, mercy last.

It was not a clean battle.

Clean battles existed in songs and in the mouths of men who had never watched a man drown in mud with an arrow in his throat. Widow’s Watch became a mess of fog, screams, broken banners, and men trying to find the direction least likely to kill them. Several found none.

Ramsay’s Bastard’s Boys tried to hold by cruelty. They shouted threats, dragged fleeing men back into line, and cut down two or three deserters as examples. It worked for a few breaths. Then the crossbowmen began choosing their leaders. A man shouting orders died with a bolt in his mouth. A banner went down. A second officer fell clutching his belly. Fear spread through men who had spent too long believing themselves frightening.

That was the trouble with terror. It aged badly when returned.

“Hold!” Ramsay screamed, hacking down a man who tried to run past him. “Hold, or I will have your skins!”

The words had worked before.

Now the men looked past him and saw Battanian shields advancing through the mist. They saw the Raiders slipping through reeds with axes dark in their hands. They saw Karstark officers falling one after another. They saw the northern road still open, and every man with a working pair of legs understood the mercy hidden inside that opening.

The first rout began among the coerced men.

Then it spread.

Lord Alfie Karstark tried to salvage what he could. His household men formed a rough block around the sunburst banner and fought with more discipline than the Boltons. They were angry, and anger could keep a formation together almost as well as courage. Almost. The crossbowmen found their captains. The heavy infantry pressed harder. The flanks came in again, cutting at the edges.

“My lord!” one of Ramsay’s men shouted, face streaked with blood. “We cannot hold! We must retreat!”

Ramsay looked over the field.

The mist had thinned enough for him to see the truth. His line was crushed in three directions. His men were fleeing north. The enemy was not pursuing recklessly. They were herding them. That was worse. A man who chased too eagerly could be trapped. A man who drove you like cattle had already decided what you were.

For one moment, Ramsay looked as though he might stay and die out of spite.

Then survival won.

“North!” he roared. “Back to the Dreadfort!”

He gathered his guards and cut a path through his own broken men. Lord Alfie saw the movement, cursed under his breath, and followed with his household guard. Pride was useful. Dying beside Ramsay Bolton was not.

The coalition did not plunge after them.

Arthur’s order held. Archers and javelinmen sent the fugitives on with iron, making the retreat bloody enough to remember but not costly enough for the pursuers to regret. Men dropped shields. Men abandoned banners. Men dragged wounded brothers for a while, then left them when the next volley came too close. The northern road filled with defeated soldiers carrying fear toward the Dreadfort and Karhold.

By noon, Widow’s Watch belonged to Arthur.

The battlefield below the high ground was strewn with bodies, discarded weapons, torn banners, and men kneeling in surrender with hands raised and faces hollow. The fog began to creep back over the ground, as if the land wished to hide what men had done on it. The land had seen worse. That was no comfort.

Reports came one by one.

The Bolton-Karstark coalition had lost more than five thousand men, most of them captured. Many others were wounded or scattered. Their morale had collapsed. Ramsay had fled north with the core of his surviving men. Lord Alfie Karstark had escaped toward Karhold with what remained of his household guard.

The coalition had taken fewer than one thousand casualties.

Fewer than expected.

Still too many for the men who would be carried home in carts.

Arthur stood on Widow’s Watch with his guards around him. Below, the coalition gathered prisoners, sorted banners, dragged wounded men from mud, and stripped the dead of usable steel. War was a feast for crows, quartermasters, and men too practical to be disgusted for long.

“My lord,” an officer said, leading forward a young noble with blood on his face and fear poorly hidden in his eyes. “An important prisoner from House Karstark. Lord Alfie’s nephew.”

The young man tried to stand straight despite the rope at his wrists. His pride was still alive. Good. Pride made messages travel farther.

Arthur looked at him, then turned to Flio.

“Treat his wounds. Feed him. Give him a horse.”

The officer blinked. The prisoner did too.

Arthur continued, “Then let him go.”

The young Karstark stared at him as if he had misheard.

“You will return to your uncle,” Arthur said. “Tell Lord Alfie Karstark and every northerner still following Bolton, or still pretending hesitation is wisdom, that the army of the Westerlands came north for two reasons. To settle accounts for betrayal and to fight the enemy beyond the Wall. Those who lay down arms and turn against Bolton will be forgiven enough to remain subjects of the North. Those who remain with the flayed man will learn that today was only a warning.”

The young man swallowed.

Arthur’s voice lowered.

“And tell Ramsay Bolton to wait for me at the Dreadfort. The debt of the Red Wedding, Ena’s blood, and every northern death bought by Bolton treachery will be collected. He likes flaying. I will teach him that skin is not the only thing a man can lose.”

No one spoke for several breaths.

The wind moved his cloak. The fog shifted around the hill.

“Go,” Arthur said.

The prisoner was taken away.

Smith came to stand beside him. “You are letting fear do the marching.”

“It has better legs than infantry.”

Smith gave him a sideways look, then nodded once. “The men are ready to continue once the field is cleared.”

“They will rest first. Then we march.”

Arthur looked north.

Moat Cailin had opened. The first gate into the heart of the North had been forced with blood, planning, and the old generosity of enemies who believed themselves clever. The Dreadfort waited beyond the mist, carrying centuries of cruelty and the newer stink of treason.

The true war still lay farther north.

But a man did not leave a tumor in the body before fighting a fever. First Bolton. Then the Wall.
