ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Moat Cailin was not a castle.

It was a stretch of broken land at the northern edge of the Neck, where swamps, frozen streams, reeds, and old stones tried their best to murder anyone foolish enough to march through them. Armies had died there before. Some had been defeated by men. Others by mud, cold, hunger, and commanders who confused courage with walking into a bog in formation.

The Westerlands-Riverlands coalition entered the region under a low grey sky.

There were about forty-five thousand men in the vanguard, mostly Battanian troops. Forty thousand had come from the Westerlands, and another five thousand from the Riverlands. The numbers looked impressive on parchment. In Moat Cailin, parchment meant little. A man could command ten thousand swords and still lose them one by one to mist, rotten ground, and the cheerful habit swamps had of swallowing boots, horses, and dignity.

Cold fog crawled over the ground. The air smelled of wet earth, dead reeds, and old water. Beneath the soldiers’ feet, the frozen mud shifted into soft mire without warning. Men moved carefully, testing the ground with spearbutts and curses. The soldiers from the warmer south learned quickly that the North had no need to shout its threats. It simply waited.

Arthur Greyoak did not ride.

He walked near the front beneath a thick fur cloak, his eyes moving over the ground, the mist, the reeds, and the sparse tree lines that rose like black fingers through the fog. Scouts came and went around him like ghosts. Their reports arrived in fragments: signs of small northern ranger units, tracks near the marsh paths, traces of men watching from the higher ground. No clear sight of the main force.

That was answer enough.

“Bolton’s men and House Karstark should be waiting ahead,” Smith said beside him. His voice was low, but the fog seemed to carry sound in strange ways. “They know this ground. They are waiting for us to tire ourselves out. If we force a direct assault, we lose men for no good reason.”

“We will not give them one,” Arthur said.

He took out a rough map of the North and placed one gloved finger on a strip of higher ground north of Moat Cailin. Widow’s Watch. The name had the courtesy to sound unpleasant before men even reached it.

“The vanguard will make a show of attacking the old marsh fortress. Drums, banners, shield walls, ballistae. Loud enough for even Ramsay Bolton to notice, which is apparently the standard we must work with now.”

Smith’s mouth twitched once. That was close to laughter from him.

“The main force moves west,” Arthur continued. “You will lead the heavy infantry and crossbowmen. The surrendered northern rangers know a path along the edge of the Weeping Swamp. It is considered impassable, but smugglers and hunters have used it when the ground freezes. You move tonight. By noon tomorrow, I want you on the flank and rear of Widow’s Watch.”

“Flank them and cut their retreat?” Smith asked.

“No.”

Arthur drew a line north, toward the Dreadfort.

“Leave the northern road open.”

Smith studied the map in silence. He understood before Arthur finished.

“I do not want to destroy them here,” Arthur said. “Bolton and Karstark have around twenty thousand men. If they fall back into their castles and fight from stone, we will spend lives cracking them out. I want a rout. I want fear moving faster than ravens. Let the broken men run back to the Dreadfort and Karhold. Let them tell every lord still hesitating what happened when they faced us in the field.”

“A wound that walks,” Smith said.

“Exactly.”

Arthur looked toward the fog.

“Execute the Wolf Hunt. Heavy infantry and shield walls press from the front. Crossbowmen and archers target officers, banners, and exposed ranks. Kator and Beland strike from the marshes on both flanks with the light infantry and Raiders. Split them. Harass them. Make them feel surrounded even before they are.”

“And when they break?”

“Send them north with arrows and javelins. Do not pursue too deeply. I want them bleeding, running, and talking.”

War was not always about killing the largest number of men. Dead men told no stories. Terrified survivors did. Westeros was full of lords who respected songs, oaths, old names, and other delicate nonsense. Fear, at least, was practical.

Arthur folded the map.

“Tell Kator and Beland to mark banners carefully. Bolton loyalists are one matter. Men dragged into this under threat are another. But troops under the Karstark sunburst may be treated more harshly if they resist.”

Smith glanced at him.

Arthur’s face did not change. “As for surrender, accept it from any man who is not Bolton kin, a confirmed Karstark hardliner, or one of Ramsay’s butchers. Disarm them. Guard them. Feed them enough to keep them useful.”

The orders moved quickly.

The coalition shifted inside the mist like a great machine pretending to be a confused army. Shield walls formed and broke. Scouts vanished into reeds. Smith took his chosen men west under the cover of fog and night. Kator and Beland disappeared with their light infantry and Raiders, men used to dirty work in bad ground. War liked such men. They were less pretty than knights, but far less likely to die because their horse stepped into mud.

At Widow’s Watch, Ramsay Bolton waited.

He had brought twelve thousand men, including two thousand of his favored Bastard’s Boys. They were criminals, captives, thugs, and broken men remade through cruelty. Ramsay thought terror made good soldiers. It did, until they met men more afraid of losing than of being punished.

Beside him stood Lord Alfie Karstark with eight thousand men hungry for revenge and pride. Alfie was old, sharp-eyed, and less foolish than Ramsay, which made his presence there unfortunate. His men had taken the high ground and dug crude works among stone and frozen earth. Arrows, boulders, and hidden reserves waited for the coalition to blunder into the killing ground below.

Ramsay stood on a stone outcrop overlooking the marsh.

“Look at them,” he said, smiling as the Westerlands vanguard moved dimly through the fog. “Southern sheep walking into the butcher’s yard.”

Lord Alfie did not smile.

The enemy’s advance seemed too neat. Too obedient. Men did not bring forty-five thousand soldiers north only to hand them over to a swamp because the road looked inviting. He knew Moat Cailin better than Ramsay. That was one reason he was uneasy. The land punished arrogance. Ramsay had enough arrogance to feed a winter.

Near dawn, the coalition vanguard formed ranks before the ruins of the old marsh fortress. Drums began to beat. Horns called through the fog. Shields rose. Ballistae were drawn forward. The display was broad, loud, and obvious.

Ramsay laughed.

“They mean to storm us. Idiots.”

The expected charge never came.

The shield walls moved slowly. Ballistae loosed bolts into the reeds and sparse woods below the fortress. Archers sent shafts into empty ground. The whole assault seemed large enough to worry men, but careful enough not to commit. A feint, if one was willing to think. Ramsay was willing to enjoy himself first.

Then shouting rose from the rear.

“Enemy behind us!”

“They came through the swamp!”

“The Westerlanders are behind us!”

Smith’s force appeared on the gentle slope behind Widow’s Watch, twenty thousand strong. Heavy infantry moved in disciplined blocks, shields catching the pale sun. Crossbowmen already had bolts set and raised. They had crossed the Weeping Swamp in the night and arrived where no army was supposed to arrive.

Lord Alfie went pale.

“That ground cannot carry a force that size.”

Smith’s sword came down.

The first volley answered him.

Crossbow bolts fell into the exposed rear ranks of the Bolton-Karstark line. Men without shields died first. Men with shields died next if they were too slow. Officers shouted conflicting orders. Banners lurched as their bearers fell. The rear tried to turn. The front still faced the vanguard. The flanks looked toward the marshes and found more men rising from reeds.

Kator struck from the left.

Beland struck from the right.

The Wolf Hunt closed.
