ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

King’s Landing smelled different after Tywin Lannister’s death.

Not cleaner. The city would have needed divine intervention and perhaps fire for that. But inside the Red Keep, around Queen Regent Cersei, the air had changed. Less wine-heavy rage. Less jeweled arrogance thrown at servants and councillors. More cold restraint. More silence. More rust beneath perfume.

Cersei stood before a gilded mirror in her chamber, studying the woman inside it.

Her golden hair still shone. Fine lines had begun to gather near her eyes. Exhaustion had sharpened her beauty rather than softened it. Grief had not made her gentle. It had burned away something loud and left something narrower.

“I am Cersei Lannister,” she whispered. “Daughter of Tywin Lannister. A Lannister always pays her debts.”

Debts.

House Tyrell, creeping through the court with bread, smiles, soldiers, and that little rose Margaery. The usurping barbarian in the Westerlands, Arthur of House Greyoak, who had taken Casterly Rock and now dared extend his hand toward the sea. Tyrion, vanished and still guilty in her mind because guilt was easier when it had a familiar face. Joffrey, her son, her king, her beautiful monster, growing harder to control by the day.

She could rely on no one.

Kevan was isolated. The remaining Westerlands houses were dead, surrendered, distant, or busy learning which way to bow. The Tyrells surrounded the throne with flowers that hid thorns. Joffrey wanted obedience but not counsel. The Small Council wore loyalty like men wore cloaks in rain: useful until soaked.

So Cersei began again.

She reopened what remained of her father’s hidden networks. Some informants were old. Some forgotten. Some had expected the Lannisters to be finished and therefore charged too much. She paid with coin, promises, threats, and the memory of Tywin’s name. Officers in the City Watch who disliked Tyrell influence were bought. Red Keep servants were reminded who had ruled before roses filled the halls. A few knights near the king were encouraged to listen more carefully.

She no longer shouted during council. She watched.

Mace Tyrell’s decisions. Olenna’s quiet messages through Margaery. Courtiers bending too low. Randyll Tarly’s pride. Redwyne caution. The Reach was powerful, but not one body. It had old houses, old interests, old rivalries. Mace might call them flowers in one garden. Cersei saw roots choking each other under the soil.

House Tarly followed the Reach, but Randyll Tarly did not strike her as a man content to be moved by Mace’s soft hands. House Redwyne held the Arbor fleet, and fleets had their own hunger. The rise of Arthur in the Westerlands had also pinned the Reach’s attention westward. Tyrell power was stretching.

Enemies could become shields.

Temporary ones, at least. Permanent trust was something fools invented to make betrayal feel surprising.

Cersei turned south.

Dorne.

A land with old blood hatred against House Lannister, yes. But also a land wary of the Reach, armed, proud, and patient in a way that annoyed everyone with shorter lives and louder mouths. Dorne hated Lannisters. Dorne also feared being smothered if the Reach became too powerful. Hatred and fear could share a table if politics poured the wine.

Cersei wrote the letter herself.

Stolen from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Not as Queen Regent begging. Not as a wounded woman. As Tywin Lannister’s daughter and the mother of the king.

She wrote that House Tyrell was becoming a regency in all but name, that Margaery would soon be crowned queen, that the roses meant to swallow the Iron Throne and the legacy of Baratheon and Lannister together. She wrote of Arthur in the Westerlands, the foreign-rooted warlord who had taken Casterly Rock and now bargained with Ironborn. She wrote of Stannis on Dragonstone, sharpening his faith and fleet under the red god’s banners.

Then she made her offer.

Marriage.

Not herself to Doran. Even desperation had boundaries, though Cersei considered them mostly decorative. Her daughter, Princess Myrcella Baratheon, to Prince Trystane Martell, Doran’s youngest son. She ignored age, prior whispers, and any existing understanding. Such details were for maesters and people not trying to survive.

If Dorne aided her in cutting down Tyrell influence and securing Joffrey’s throne, the descendants of Myrcella and Trystane could carry claims to both the Iron Throne and Dorne.

It was a mad dowry. Half a realm thrown across the table.

It was also a Lannister gamble.

After the letter was sent through the quietest channels she still trusted, Cersei began another game closer to home.

She spoke to Joffrey of Margaery.

Not accusation. Concern. Concern was a lovely poison because men drank it thinking themselves loved.

Margaery was beloved by the smallfolk. Margaery smiled too easily at lords. Margaery’s brother Loras, now with Randyll Tarly in the Westerlands, was said to be too close to her. House Tyrell had old ambitions. Had not Aegon IV made a ruin of bloodlines and courts? What if the Reach meant to clear the king’s side? What if they considered Joffrey inconvenient once Margaery was queen and their soldiers held the city?

Joffrey was already suspicious. He had never liked needing Tyrell food to feed his own city. He hated applause given to anyone else. Cersei did not need to push him hard. He was a door hanging from broken hinges. One touch, and he swung.

At the same time, she let news of Arthur’s Sea Hunt success reach Randyll Tarly’s people. Not openly. Accidentally, through servants, traders, and men who thought themselves clever for hearing things meant for them. The Westerlands had struck the Ironborn, negotiated with them, secured trade, gained ships, and now looked toward the sea.

Randyll Tarly would not like that. The Reach had ships. The Reach had pride. The Reach would not enjoy seeing the Westerlands learning to breathe salt air.

Let roses and lions distrust each other.

Let everyone look sideways.

Cersei slept better that night than she had in weeks. Not peacefully. Peace was for children and dead men. But better.

Far to the south, in Sunspear, Prince Doran Martell held her letter in swollen fingers.

The wax seal had softened in the heat. Doran stared at it long enough for Oberyn to grow restless, which was not difficult. Oberyn disliked stillness unless it belonged to someone he had just killed.

“Cersei Lannister,” Doran said at last. “After Tywin’s death, she grew claws.”

“Marriage?” Oberyn said, smiling without warmth. “Myrcella and Trystane. The promise of a Lannister is worth less than snow in Sunspear. She wants us to fight the Tyrells and prop up her little monster.”

“I know.”

“Then burn it.”

“No.”

Oberyn’s eyes sharpened.

Doran placed the letter on the table. “She is wrong in many things. She is not wrong about House Tyrell. Mace is a fool, but Olenna is not. If they control King’s Landing, bind themselves to what remains of the Westerlands, and hold the food roads, Dorne will feel the pressure next.”

“And Arthur?”

“Unexpected,” Doran said. “He fights, negotiates, and learns quickly. But his foundation is shallow. He and the Reach are using each other while watching for knives. That can be useful.”

“So we accept?”

“No,” Doran said. “We allow Cersei to believe we might. We allow the Tyrells to learn the queen is reaching toward Dorne. We allow Arthur to understand King’s Landing is more tangled than he thinks.”

Oberyn laughed softly. “You want me to go.”

“Yes. Quietly. Not as an official envoy. Go to King’s Landing. Tell Cersei Dorne will consider her proposal but needs sincerity. Public assurances from Joffrey concerning old matters. Support against the Tyrells. Things she cannot easily give, which means they can be bargained over.”

“And the Tyrells?”

Doran’s eyes remained heavy, but not dull. “Let their people discover you. Accidentally.”

Oberyn’s smile turned sharp. “Accidents are my favorite kind of honesty.”

Doran did not smile. “Do not start a war before we have chosen where to stand.”

“No promises I cannot keep.”

“That is exactly why I worry.”

Oberyn left with a pleased expression. He liked games that might turn bloody. Dorne had waited years for vengeance. Waiting did not mean sleeping.

Between Lannister desperation, Tyrell ambition, Arthur’s rise, and Stannis’s claim, Dorne would walk a tightrope. Fortunately, Dornishmen had long experience crossing hot stone barefoot while others wondered why they were not screaming.
