ASOIAF/Game Of Thrones: Ruler of Batannia

Stannis’s retreat did not bring peace.

It brought accounting.

That was worse in some ways. During battle, men could blame noise, smoke, and panic. Afterward, ink arrived. Lists of dead. Lists of missing. Lists of burned stores. Lists of gates damaged, warehouses destroyed, ships lost, men unpaid, families begging, priests executed, traitors suspected, and commanders needing someone else to blame. War was terrible, but paperwork after war had its own quiet cruelty.

House Tyrell had saved the city in the practical sense. Their soldiers had held the Red Keep, driven Stannis back from the lower streets, and suffered heavily retaking the Mud Gate. Many of their household knights and scions died in Flea Bottom, which was an undignified place to die, though death rarely consulted heraldry.

Mace Tyrell expected gratitude.

He received Cersei.

At the Small Council, she did not shout at first. That made men listen. She questioned why the Mud Gate had been so poorly defended. Why the Blackwater fleet had been sent away at the exact moment Stannis struck. Why Tyrell commanders had failed to coordinate with the Gold Cloaks. Why rebels had entered the city through a gate under Reach oversight. Why the king’s safety had depended on last-moment improvisation.

Mace flushed, protested, and blustered.

Cersei let him.

Bluster worked best against men who cared about noise. Cersei cared about wounds.

Her witnesses came next.

Gold Cloaks loyal to the crown, or paid to remember loyalty in a specific shape, testified that Tyrell officers had abandoned posts near the Mud Gate. Servants swore they had heard Reachmen delay orders. A minor commander claimed he had requested reinforcements and been ignored. Some testimony was false. Some was true. The mixture made it harder to cut apart, which was why lies worked best when wrapped around a bone of fact.

Then came the letters.

They were discovered by loyal servants in a chamber associated with Margaery’s attendants. Some were forged. Others were real letters taken from old correspondence and trimmed until affection looked like corruption. The implication was foul enough to stick: Margaery and Loras too close, too intimate, too dangerous to royal honor and succession.

Cersei wept before Joffrey.

That was the most dangerous part. Cersei could be clumsy when enraged, but she understood her son’s vanity with a mother’s intimacy and a jailer’s instinct.

“She means to shame you,” Cersei whispered. “They all do. They smile and bow while they make you small. They think the throne belongs to them because they feed the city.”

Joffrey believed her because he wanted to.

He had already resented the Tyrells. Their soldiers guarded him. Their food fed the smallfolk. Their daughter received cheers. Their lord gave advice. A king like Joffrey could endure many things, but not being made to feel dependent.

He nearly ordered Margaery arrested that day.

Only Kevan Lannister, pale and careful, managed to delay him by suggesting that a queen-to-be should not be seized without proper charges unless His Grace wished to gift every enemy a complaint. Joffrey liked executions. He liked them better when they had ceremony.

Mace was furious. He was also frightened.

His men had bled. His daughter’s reputation was under attack. The queen mother had more influence in the City Watch than he had realized. Dorne had begun moving. Oberyn Martell, who had watched from the shadows with the patience of a man enjoying a good poisoning, sent a message through an intermediary. Dorne was concerned about the stability of King’s Landing and House Tyrell’s ability to maintain order.

A polite threat.

Politeness did not improve it.

From the west came worse news. Arthur Greyoak had secured the Westerlands, made terms with the Ironborn, and forced Randyll Tarly’s position into awkward isolation. From the east, the Vale had grown quiet in a way that suggested Littlefinger was busy doing something regrettable. Stannis had retreated, but not been destroyed. The Reach itself was uneasy, with noble houses wondering whether Mace had dragged them into a city that ate men and thanked them with accusations.

Then Olenna Tyrell’s letter arrived.

It was short. That made it more serious.

Withdraw.

Not in those words, naturally. The Queen of Thorns had better manners than a battle horn. But the meaning was clear. House Tyrell had overextended in King’s Landing. Full control of the court was no longer worth the cost. Mace was to preserve strength, return to the Reach, secure their own lands, and leave Cersei to rule the ashes she had worked so hard to arrange.

Retreat to advance. A phrase men used when retreat sounded too honest.

On the seventh day after Stannis’s withdrawal, Lord Mace Tyrell resigned his effective regency. He gave reasons fit for court: heavy losses, the need to rest the Reach army, urgent matters in the south, and the illness of his mother, Lady Olenna. Margaery would accompany him to Highgarden.

Cersei tried to persuade him to stay.

She even cried.

Several courtiers admired the performance because people in courts were often stupid in well-dressed ways.

Joffrey did not ask them to remain. He wanted Mace gone. He wanted Margaery punished. He wanted his court back, though he had never controlled it in the first place. Possession was a favorite fantasy of kings.

House Tyrell left King’s Landing like a tide pulling back from a corpse-strewn shore. Their remaining soldiers marched out under banners still proud, though fewer in number. Margaery rode in a covered wheelhouse, her face unseen. Loras was not present, being with the Reach forces elsewhere. That saved him from doing something brave and inconvenient.

They left behind a damaged city, a shaken court, an emptying treasury, frightened smallfolk, and a throne room no longer filled with roses.

Cersei moved at once.

She named Kevan Lannister Hand of the King. He did not want the post. Wanting had little to do with it. He was a Lannister, and Cersei needed a man whose name could steady the old loyalists without threatening her too much. Kevan knew this. He accepted because refusing would leave worse men in charge, which was how decent men often found themselves helping disaster wear cleaner boots.

Lannister-aligned nobles returned to key posts. The City Watch was reorganized with coin, threats, and selected hangings. The Kingsguard were watched more closely. The royal household was stripped of Tyrell servants. Ravens flew to lords who still cared about royal legitimacy, or feared being named traitor more than they hated Cersei.

For a brief moment, the court belonged to her.

That was when she chose to act.

The first court session after the Tyrell departure was crowded, tense, and heavy with the smell of smoke still clinging to wool and velvet. Cersei entered not in queenly finery, but in a simple black gown. A plain gold ring circled her finger. Tommen Baratheon walked beside her, eight years old and trying to understand why everyone looked as if he had become dangerous by accident.

Cersei led him toward the Iron Throne.

She did not let him sit.

“My lords,” she said, her voice carrying through the hall, “the small council, with the witness of the High Septon, has confirmed a grievous matter. His Grace King Joffrey Baratheon, exhausted by the defense of the city and weakened by treachery around him, took ill while recovering in the Red Keep.”

The hall stilled.

Cersei lowered her gaze for one breath. When she looked up, her eyes were bright.

“He passed in the night.”

The court erupted.

Men shouted. Women gasped. Several looked toward the doors as if Joffrey might stride in and punish them for believing her. He did not. That was the strength of a corpse. It won arguments by absence.

Joffrey had been alive the previous day. Angry. Loud. Vicious. Illness made a poor explanation. It also made a convenient one when guards stood by the doors and the High Septon, pale and controlled, nodded beside the throne.

Before questions could gather enough courage, Cersei raised her voice.

“The realm cannot stand without a ruler. By law, Joffrey’s rightful heir is his brother, Prince Tommen Baratheon.”

Tommen trembled.

Cersei placed both hands on his shoulders.

“But Tommen is a child. Rebellion still stains the realm. Stannis lives. The Tyrells retreat to their gardens while the city bleeds. The Westerlands have been seized by a foreign-rooted warlord. The realm is surrounded by enemies and traitors. I will not place such a burden on a boy.”

She stepped forward.

“I am Cersei Lannister, daughter of Lord Tywin Lannister, widow of King Robert Baratheon, mother of Joffrey and Tommen. Until the rebels are defeated, the realm is stable, and Tommen comes of age, I will rule as Queen Regent and Queen of the Seven Kingdoms in defense of his rights. Any who deny this deny the rightful line and stand with Stannis, the Tyrell traitors, and the usurpers who would break the realm apart.”

Silence followed.

It was not consent. It was fear looking for the safest posture.

Kevan knelt first. His face revealed nothing. Several Lannister men followed. Then men of the court, one by one, lowered themselves. Some from calculation. Some from fear. Some because standing too long in a hall full of armed guards seemed a poor hill to die on.

“Long live the Queen,” Kevan said.

The words spread thinly through the hall.

“Long live the Queen.”

Cersei stood before the Iron Throne in black, one hand on Tommen’s shoulder, the other resting near the cold metal of swords fused into power. She had crowned herself with a lie large enough that men could not easily step around it.

It was a terrible plan.

It worked.
