She Used Me for a Dare… Now I Own Her Mother

Chapter 537: The Grand Meridian

Alex’s car slowed and stopped beneath the canopy of a hotel that took up most of the block. Pale stone climbed several floors above the street, broken by tall windows and a line of gold lighting that followed the curve of the entrance.

Two doormen stood under the canopy in dark uniforms, and a polished drive swept in from the avenue so that arriving cars never had to wait on the road.

This was the Grand Meridian.

The meeting with Raymond Cole was set for five. Alex glanced at the clock on the dash, it read four-thirty. He had come half an hour early on purpose. He wanted the extra time to walk in settled and take the measure of the room.

Alex stayed in the car for a moment after the engine went quiet. He took out his phone and opened Viktor’s file again.

The team had surprised him once more with how complete the work was. In two hours they had gathered almost everything that could still be found on Raymond Cole, and the file on his phone was thick enough that Alex no longer had to walk in blind.

The photograph on his phone showed a man believed to be in his sixties. The face did not match the number. The jaw was still clean, the eyes still sharp, and the skin had the kind of tautness that usually came from years of cultivation. The public record listed him at the Middle Stage of the Enhanced Realm. Alex did not trust that line.

Older men from Cole’s generation rarely let a true realm sit in an open file, and there had been no fresh reading on him in years.

The rest of the file made him pause.

Cole was a strange man. His company had already fallen apart. The building was the last piece of real value he still held, and even that sat locked in a fight he had not bothered to finish.

For someone in that position, he lived as if none of it pressed on him. He kept odd hours. He still ate well. He still took tables at places like the Grand Meridian. He did not look like a seller who needed the money this week.

The reason sat lower in the report.

He had almost no family left. His only son had died of an illness five years ago. The daughter-in-law had vanished shortly before that death, and the timing was ugly enough that Viktor had marked it twice. There was no police close, no public quarrel, and no later sighting that could be trusted. Either she had run, or someone had removed her before the son was gone. The file could not prove which. It only made the house feel emptier.

After that, Cole had stopped fighting for the company. Debts piled up. Partners walked. Men who owed him money disappeared into other firms. What remained of the business collapsed under its own weight, and Cole let it. The building survived because it had been his from the start, paid for with his own hands, and because he refused to give it to the three families circling it like it already belonged to them.

Alex locked the phone and looked toward the hotel doors.

A man with no heir, no company, and one last piece of land should have been easy. This one did not read that way. Cole had lost almost everything and still sat on the building as if selling it were a choice, not a need. That was the part Alex would have to handle carefully.

***

Alex stepped out of the car and walked toward the entrance. The two doormen straightened at once and pulled the doors open for him, each offering a short, practiced welcome as he passed between them.

The lobby opened around him in a wide sweep of dark marble and gold light. A fountain ran quietly at the center. Fresh flowers stood in tall arrangements along the columns, and the air held the clean scent of polished wood. A bar sat to the left behind smoked glass, already lit, with a few early guests at the counter. Straight ahead, the reception desk waited under a long stretch of warm lamps.

The two women behind it saw him coming and both looked up at the same time.

Their faces stayed professional but their eyes did not. For a second the hunger in them was plain, the kind of look that ran over his face, his shoulders, and the way he moved before either of them remembered where they were standing. One of them drew a small breath. The other touched the edge of the desk as if she needed something to hold.

Alex was used to that now. He smiled as he reached them.

”Hello,” he said, easy and warm.

The greeting was enough to pull them back. The older of the two, the one with the nameplate of a senior clerk, smoothed her jacket and found her voice first.

”Good evening, sir. How may we help you?”

Alex rested a hand lightly on the desk and let the smile stay.

”Well, you see, I have a meeting placed here, but it looks like I came a bit early.” His tone was pleasant, almost playful. ”Would you show me around a little while I wait?”

The senior clerk answered before the other woman could speak, as if the request had been the one thing she had wanted to hear.

”Of course, sir. Please, come with me.”

She came around the desk and led him away from the reception with the same eagerness she had shown when she accepted. She spoke as they walked, pointing out each wing as if the hotel itself were something she wanted him to like.

The lobby opened into a long gallery of sitting rooms and private lounges. Beyond that she showed him the dining floors, the cigar terrace on the inner court, and a spa corridor that ran quiet and warm beneath the main hall. There was a members’ library, a small gallery of paintings, and even a private cinema for guests who wanted the night without leaving the building. Every door she opened had the same finish. Soft light. Thick carpet. Staff who stepped aside before they were asked.

Alex listened and took it in. The Grand Meridian was not only expensive. It was built for a man who wanted to spend hours here and never feel the need to go somewhere else. If someone came to enjoy his time, this place already had the answer waiting.

Alex looked over the hall once more and smiled.

”This hotel really is as grand as I expected,” he said. ”It has not disappointed me at all.”

The clerk’s face brightened at the praise. He turned to her before she could thank him.

”By the way, the private room on the first floor,” he said, still smiling. ”Would you happen to know who reserved it?”

She answered at once, glad to be useful.

”That would be Mr. Cole, sir. He is one of our regulars. In fact, he is already here. If you are looking for him, you will find him at the bar.”
