I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 341: Chapter 230: All-English Questioning? Three Heroes Versus Jiang He

Jiang He’s concept of applying goal-directed early fluid resuscitation to SAP was still quite obscure in China back in ’08.

Even internationally, it was only in the exploratory stage.

The idea was simply too advanced. Coupled with the notoriously tricky nature of English, it was perfectly normal that the old professors couldn’t understand.

The three professors were gradually starting to forget this was just a mock test.

Their core academic instincts had been awakened!

Zhou Deming couldn’t be bothered to continue in English and pressed on directly in Chinese, ”Xiaojiang, you mentioned maintaining visceral perfusion. If you administer a large volume of fluids early on, how do you avoid Abdominal Compartment Syndrome, or ACS?”

”Exactly!” Guo Fengwan also quickly switched to Chinese. ”A lot of the time, we’re afraid to administer fluids precisely because we’re worried the fluid in the abdominal cavity won’t come out.”

Seeing the two senior professors switch back to Chinese, Jiang He naturally followed suit, answering fluently:

”That’s why, while administering fluids, we must dynamically monitor bladder pressure. Furthermore, for at-risk patients who are already showing a trend toward intra-abdominal hypertension, we need to readjust the crystalloid-to-colloid ratio in our initial fluid strategy. We’d introduce albumin and plasma, using colloid osmotic pressure to keep water within the blood vessels. At the same time, we must establish a double-lumen catheter for peritoneal lavage and drainage as early as possible.”

Fu Yunshu’s brow was furrowed. ”But the early intervention with colloids is highly controversial internationally right now. Some believe it increases the burden on the kidneys.”

”That’s because they haven’t properly determined the endpoints of resuscitation. If we use Central Venous Pressure (CVP), Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP), and Central Venous Oxygen Saturation (ScvO2) as a combined indicator...”

Minister Lin leisurely sipped his tea.

The academic discussion had reached a fever pitch, but it had nothing to do with him.

He hadn’t been listening from the very start. All he could hear was the four of them jabbering away.

He figured he’d just drink his tea and forget about it.

What began as a Q&A in English had evolved into a summit-level debate among the four of them on the early intervention pathway for SAP.

With nothing else to do, Lin Zhenhua began observing the people in the room.

The three seniors were currently gathered around a young man in his early twenties, their brows furrowing one moment, their faces lighting up with realization the next, then launching into heated rebuttals.

’Interesting.’

Jiang He, on the other hand, was facing a full-on barrage from three top experts. Not only did he show no signs of faltering, but he seemed to grow stronger with each exchange.

He was even subtly taking control of the entire discussion’s tempo.

’In ancient times, three heroes fought Lu Bu. Today, three professors are fighting Jiang He?’

Minister Lin found it absolutely thrilling.

「Forty minutes later.」

Professor Zhou Deming.

Was tired.

Forcing an old man to engage in a high-intensity debate for forty minutes is an exhausting task.

It feels a lot like when some authors try way too hard to tell a joke.

After a long while.

Zhou Deming called out softly, ”Old Fu, Old Guo, did you find any flaws in what he just said?”

Fu Yunshu sighed. ”I couldn’t find any.”

Guo Fengwan gave a wry smile. ”The new generation really does surpass the old.”

Jiang He said, ”You’re too kind, Seniors.”

Zhou Deming fell silent for a moment, then looked at Jiang He and said, ”Xiaojiang, I take back what I said to you at the beginning.”

Jiang He was slightly taken aback, not understanding what he meant.

”Our generation... we went abroad early.”

Zhou Deming gave a self-deprecating laugh.

”Back in the eighties and nineties, we’d go to the United States, see their labs, their medical equipment, their grand conference halls, and we couldn’t help but feel inferior. That’s why we advocated for humility and patience. Even when people made things difficult for us, we’d put on a smile and call it a ’learning exchange’.”

Fu Yunshu and Guo Fengwan also fell silent, their eyes filled with a bittersweet nostalgia for that era.

”We grew accustomed to that way of survival. So when we called you here today, we subconsciously wanted to teach you how to curry favor with those authorities.”

Zhou Deming took a deep breath.

”But those last forty minutes... you gave me a wake-up call.”

Jiang He immediately straightened up. ”Elder Zhou, I absolutely didn’t mean to offend you...”

”I’m not talking about your attitude.”

Zhou Deming waved his hand, cutting Jiang He off. ”Your knowledge base, your logical abilities, your reaction speed in a fully English environment... it makes me feel... that you’re not just as good as those professors at Hopkins.”

Fu Yunshu also stood up and nodded. ”Old Zhou is right. Go with your own ideas. Let them see the caliber of China’s young doctors today!”

Guo Fengwan smiled and shook his head. ”Go on. Don’t hold back.”

Seeing the complete change in the three senior professors’ attitudes, Jiang He stood up, took a step back, and bowed deeply to the three elders.

”I will remember this.”

Lin Zhenhua couldn’t suppress the smile at the corners of his mouth.

He just knew it. Jiang He would never disappoint.

This gem wasn’t just capable of holding his own within the province; on the international stage, he could still cause an absolute rout.

The three senior professors left the conference room, their hearts stirred, saying they needed to go back and properly digest the new concepts Jiang He had presented that day.

Only Lin Zhenhua and Jiang He remained in the conference room.

Lin Zhenhua said,

”You did very well today. The seniors originally came to help you, but you ended up helping them resolve a long-held hang-up instead. You’re really something. The Baltimore event is set for mid-December. The provincial department and the hospital will take care of all the travel arrangements and accommodations. Your only job now is to stay in top form.”

”Understood. Thank you, Minister Lin.”

Lin Zhenhua paused in thought for a moment before continuing, ”For this trip to the US, besides the official entourage and translation team, is there anyone from your side you’d like to bring? For instance, a core member of your project team? I can get the foreign affairs office to give the green light and expedite your visas together. After all, when you’re abroad, having a few familiar friends or assistants around will make life and work more convenient.”

Jiang He initially thought of bringing Wang Xiaoqing, but on second thought, she needed to stay with the team to monitor their progress.

Besides, even if Professor Wang went, he couldn’t really help him with much.

’In fact, when it comes to professional matters, there’s no one in the country who can help me anymore...’

However, a certain person suddenly came to Jiang He’s mind.

’Mid-December... If I go to the United States, I’ll probably be gone for over a week.’

’I’d really miss her, wouldn’t I?’

’Besides, the trip to the United States isn’t just for the conference. Baltimore isn’t far from Washington. Maybe I could even take her to see the snow in New York.’

Jiang He asked, ”Minister Lin, about the person I can bring... can it be anyone?”

Lin Zhenhua laughed heartily. ”Yes, it can. This is an official trip. If you have a friend who wants to come along for the experience, I can have the American side add an extra spot for a companion on the invitation. The foreign affairs office can put in a good word with the consulate to make the visa interview go smoothly. But, as per the usual rules, unofficial personnel will have to pay for their own flights and accommodations.”

Jiang He said, ”Oh, okay, no problem. I have a friend named Shen Yu. She’s a student at North Normal University...”
