I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 331: Chapter 225: Reborn to Perform Surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital

Wait, what?

It took a moment for everyone to register what was happening.

They had originally thought their mentor had called them over for a critical discussion of the proposal.

But it turned out they were here for a lecture?

This young guy was going to lecture the clinical PhDs and attending physicians of Peking Union Medical College Hospital?

This was beyond absurd.

What Wang Ke found most unacceptable was that Professor Zhong had also taken out a notebook and was preparing to take notes!

His gaze was gentle as he said, ”Jiang He, don’t feel constrained. Just treat this as an internal academic discussion.”

Jiang He was filled with respect.

In both his past life and this one, he had seen too many academic tyrants in the medical world.

Once many people reached a certain position, they became extremely stubborn in order to protect their authority, refusing to tolerate even the slightest dissenting opinion.

Let alone deign to listen to a young person’s opinion.

But Zhong Shouxian showed not a hint of arrogance.

He only cared about technique, the survival rate of his patients, and the truth.

This was the purest character of the older generation of medical scientists.

Jiang He gathered his thoughts and said:

”The issues Dr. Huang and this other doctor just raised about the narrow field of view and vessel management are the most frequently questioned difficulties of the posterior approach during the theoretical stage.”

”But in practice, once you’re on the operating table, there are far more variables. We certainly ran into our share of problems during the early clinical trials at Affiliated Hospital No. 1.”

”I’ll speak directly about our practical experience. In our third posterior approach surgery, we discovered that when dissecting the uncinate process from behind, if the patient has an anatomical variation in a tributary of the superior mesenteric vein (SMV), blind traction can easily cause a tear.”

Huang Chengjun immediately followed up with a question: ”What was your solution?”

Jiang He answered earnestly.

After he finished, Zhong Shouxian asked without looking up, ”When creating an observation window, how do you control damage to the surrounding lymphatic vessels? The biggest fear with a posterior procedure is a persistent postoperative chylous leak.”

Jiang He nodded. ”That was also Director Yang’s biggest headache before...”

He explained it well, and it was all substance.

Wang Ke had long since given up on the idea of asking questions and had started scribbling furiously in his notebook.

Huang Chengjun’s eyes, on the other hand, lit up as he listened.

The discussion lasted nearly forty minutes.

Zhong Shouxian closed his notebook and said:

”Good. Excellent. You not only dare to think but also dare to act. The rarest thing is that after achieving results, you can still maintain such a clear head to review your work. Jiang He, since you’re so experienced with the practical application of the posterior approach, take a look at a case we just admitted.”

Zhong Shouxian pulled a few CT films from a nearby file folder.

The light box flickered on.

”The patient is a twenty-four-year-old unmarried female, transferred to our department a week ago. All preoperative examinations are complete. She was originally scheduled for a conventional anterior approach surgery this afternoon, but I’ve just decided to change the plan...”

After a few moments of observation and discussion.

Jiang He understood the professor’s intention.

This surgery was a perfect candidate for the posterior approach they had just been discussing.

Enter from the posterior.

Bypass the SMV obstruction at the front and directly expose the right border of the SMA.

This way, the most dangerous blind spot would become an area of direct visualization.

Zhong Shouxian looked at Jiang He, his tone serious. ”...So, for this afternoon’s surgery, I’ll be the lead surgeon, and you’ll be my first assistant. What do you say?”

Chen Hao: ”?”

Huang Chengjun, Wang Ke, and the other students present were all completely baffled.

Professor Zhong was the lead surgeon, and he was letting a student from another hospital be his first assistant?

Even Huang Chengjun had to stand aside? Was this right?

Jiang He was also taken aback. He hadn’t expected Zhong Shouxian to directly invite him to join the surgery.

He was well aware of his status and said, ”Professor Zhong, my medical license is currently restricted to Southern Medical University First Affiliated Hospital. Operating in another province is against regulations.”

”I’m not asking you to be the lead surgeon, I’m asking you to assist me.”

Zhong Shouxian directly dialed the internal line for the medical affairs department.

”Hello, this is Zhong Shouxian. For the pancreatic surgery in OR Two this afternoon, we’re adding an expert from another hospital for academic exchange and a demonstration of a new surgical technique. Yes, that’s right. Only as a first assistant to provide guidance. His name is Jiang He, from Southern Medical University First Affiliated Hospital. Go ahead and file the paperwork now. I’ll take full responsibility.”

Hanging up, Zhong Shouxian looked at Jiang He. ”Now it’s by the book. One o’clock this afternoon, Operating Room Two. Don’t be late.”

Jiang He was speechless. ’Awesome,’ he thought.

’Professor Zhong is just too authoritative. He says it and it’s done...’

At that moment, a term flashed through Chen Hao’s mind—

Flying Dagger.

In the medical world, ”Flying Dagger” refers to an expert from a major hospital who ”flies” to other hospitals to perform difficult surgeries.

But what was happening now?

Jiang He, a twenty-one-year-old student from Southern Medical, was coming to Peking Union Medical College Hospital to act as a ”Flying Dagger” for the top knife in China’s hepatobiliary surgery?

Did this world make any sense at all?!

Huang Chengjun’s curiosity grew even stronger. He walked up to Jiang He and said, ”Dr. Jiang, I’ll be in the surgery this afternoon as well.”

Wang Ke also braced himself and walked over, his tone complicated. ”Me too, I’ll be there too...”

Jiang He nodded. ”Alright, let’s work hard together.”

...

「One o’clock in the afternoon.」

Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Operating Room Two.

By the scrub sinks.

”Are you nervous?” Zhong Shouxian suddenly asked.

”Not at all. The patient’s condition is good, and the preoperative preparations are thorough,” Jiang He answered naturally.

He really wasn’t nervous.

In his past life, he had lost count of how many surgeries of this level he had performed.

Zhong Shouxian smiled. ”That’s good.”

The two of them walked into the operating room, hands held up.

The circulating nurse helped them into their sterile surgical gowns.

”Disinfect and drape.”

”Anesthesia is satisfactory. Prepare for incision.”

”Exploring the abdominal cavity. No ascites, no distant metastasis. Proceeding with the planned duodenum-preserving uncinate process resection via the posterior approach.”

”Begin dissection.”

”Lift the duodenojejunal flexure, retractors to the upper right.”

The moment Professor Zhong finished speaking.

Jiang He moved as if he had anticipated his every word, already prepared for the next step.

The feeling was similar to playing an ADC in a game, where your support instantly cleanses every crowd control effect with a Crucible, making you wonder if you were ever controlled in the first place...

For a moment, Professor Zhong actually felt a little unused to it.

He glanced up at Jiang He, clicking his tongue in wonder.

”Expose the superior mesenteric artery (SMA).”

Zhong Shouxian passed the traction suture, and Jiang He took it.

In an extremely narrow field of view, the two completed a perfect maneuver without a single word exchanged.

Zhong Shouxian felt comfortable.

Incredibly comfortable.

In the past, no matter how smart his students were, he always had to constantly remind them: ”Pull here, expose that, a little tighter.”

But today, he didn’t need to say a single unnecessary word.

It was as if Jiang He knew his next move, dissecting the tissue in advance and bringing the field of view right under the tip of his scalpel.

No wonder Yang Xu had praised this student to the heavens on the phone.

For an old surgeon, this feeling of seamless cooperation was more relaxing than a full-body massage.

”Begin dissection posterior to the uncinate process.”

This was the most dangerous step.

Huang Chengjun and Wang Ke stared intently at the surgical field.

They watched as Zhong Shouxian retracted from the right side, while Jiang He, on the left, used a LigaSure to precisely enter the narrow gap between the SMA and the uncinate process.

”Inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery trunk identified,” Jiang He announced. ”Two branches leading to the uncinate process.”

”Ligate the branches, preserve the trunk,” Zhong Shouxian ordered.

With a slight turn of his wrist, Jiang He accurately clamped the jaws of the LigaSure around the two branches, each less than two millimeters thick.

”BEEP—”

The sealing device emitted a tone.

Transected.

Without a single drop of blood.

Huang Chengjun was dumbfounded.

From this posterior perspective, which seemed completely inverted to a normal person, Jiang He was locating vessels with a speed and accuracy that surpassed even a B-scan ultrasound.

’Just how terrifying is his spatial awareness?’

Wang Ke’s palms were already drenched in sweat.

He now finally understood that when Jiang He said in the demonstration room not to retract blindly, he absolutely wasn’t just talking theory.

Because at this very moment, Jiang He’s left index finger was positioned behind the vein, acting as a buffer, as steady as an emotionless surgical machine—it was unnervingly stable.

You thought Jiang He was all talk?

He was here to show you his practical skills were even more outrageous than his words!

What he had said before was him being modest, mostly because he didn’t want to give you a heart attack!

Twenty minutes later.

A complete uncinate process was dissected free.

The duodenum was perfectly intact.

The main vessel trunks pulsed strongly, and the surgical field was clean.

”Specimen out, send for intraoperative frozen section,” Zhong Shouxian said, letting out a long breath as he placed the resected specimen into a kidney dish.

The scrub nurse, watching from the side, was also dizzy with shock.

’It’s over already?’

’The most critical step was finished in less than half an hour?’

’Usually, for this type of patient, just dissecting the vessels takes at least an hour, right?’

The circulating nurse, recording the time in the corner, glanced at the young first assistant at the table.

’Who is this guy?’

’He’s incredible, isn’t he?’

A lengthy wait followed. Jiang He irrigated the abdominal cavity with warm saline, checking for any bleeding points and confirming the blood supply to the duodenum.

Half an hour later.

The circulating nurse answered a call from the pathology department and reported, ”Professor Zhong, the frozen section results are in. Borderline tumor, margins are negative, no cancer cells seen.”

Zhong Shouxian breathed a sigh of relief, took a step back, and pulled off his gloves. ”Chengjun, I’m leaving the closure to you. Jiang He, you come with me.”

”Understood.” Jiang He also took off his surgical gown and handed things over to Wang Ke.

Wang Ke no longer had a trace of defiance left in him.

In the face of true skill, all arrogance is crushed.

’Alright, I give! I’m completely convinced!’

By the scrub sinks.

Zhong Shouxian watched Jiang He as he washed his hands.

”This posterior approach technique, how long did you guys polish it at Affiliated Hospital No. 1?”

”One month,” Jiang He answered truthfully.

Zhong Shouxian gave a wry smile. ”One month, and you’ve mastered the anatomical pathway of a surgery this thoroughly?”

He paused, then said suddenly, ”Jiang He, have you considered coming to Peking Union Medical College Hospital? I would mentor you personally. With your talent, I guarantee you’ll make associate chief physician within five years. Before you’re thirty, you’ll definitely have a place among the top ranks of hepatobiliary surgery in China.”

This was an offer from Zhong Shouxian himself.

Any medical student knew the weight that carried.

But Jiang He simply declined politely. ”Professor Zhong, thank you for your generous offer, but I have experiments to conduct back in Southern China. I can’t come to Peking Union Medical College Hospital.” ℯℯ𝑙.

Zhong Shouxian was slightly taken aback. ”What experiments are you conducting?”

”Conquering pancreatic cancer. I’m currently working on early screening, and in the future, I want to develop targeted drugs.”

Zhong Shouxian: ”?”

The old man had thought his offer—an invitation to Peking Union Medical College Hospital and the promise of an associate chief position—would be incredibly attractive to any young surgeon...

But only now did he have a sudden realization.

The dream this twenty-one-year-old before him held was so much bigger...

He didn’t just want to perform a surgery well.

He wanted to uproot pancreatic cancer entirely, so that tens of thousands of patients would never need a scalpel again.

Such ambition, such drive.

It was just like himself in his youth.

A look of surprise, long absent, appeared on the old man’s face.

Then, it turned into gratification.

At this moment, only four words surfaced in his mind:

—The legacy will continue.
