Three Systems Made the Fake Heiress Unstoppable

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Pitiful-Acting Evan Shaw

”I used to think Stella Winters was just a glutton, but I didn’t realize she had such a sharp tongue too.”

Brooke didn’t reply to Clara Bell. After all, Stella Winters wasn’t wrong. Chloe had paid for everything since they’d gone out—from dinner to bubble tea—and she must have realized Clara was just taking advantage of her status as a daughter of the York family. Still, Brooke had to admit that she needed a pawn like Clara right now.

”Brooke, is it true that Chloe York will be kicked out of the York Family and left to fend for herself after she graduates in a few months?” Clara Bell asked Brooke. She couldn’t wait to see Chloe get thrown out. She had endured her for two years in high school, and Chloe’s spoiled, princess-like attitude had left her full of resentment. She was dying to see her humiliated.

”Of course. Do you want to get some revenge on Chloe York first?”

”Of course I do! Do you have a good idea?” Clara Bell’s interest was piqued by Brooke York’s words.

”I certainly do. I just don’t know if you’ll dare to do it.”

”What’s there to be afraid of?”

”Alright. I’ll send you something tonight when I get back. Find a time to post it on the school’s confession wall.”

”What is it?”

”You’ll find out tonight.”

Chloe and Stella Winters hung out until after 9 PM before parting ways to go home. Elsewhere, life was more comfortable for Brooke York. With Alice Cole not at home, she didn’t have to put on an act.

That night, Clara Bell received the photos from Brooke York. One was a picture of Chloe York and Henry Ford looking at each other and smiling. The other was a picture of Chloe York and Evan Shaw sitting together at a meal, smiling at each other.

Along with the photos came some text that Brooke York had written herself.

Seeing the text and the photos, Clara Bell herself was impressed with Brooke York. If she hadn’t also been in the cafeteria that day and seen Stella Winters eating with them, she would have definitely believed that Chloe York and Evan Shaw were eating alone together.

The next day, Chloe York put the Bluetooth earbuds in her backpack and went downstairs. Sitting at the dining table, Brooke York saw her and smiled inexplicably. She didn’t say anything, but she seemed to be in a very good mood.

Chloe came to the table, sat down, and started eating breakfast. As she ate, she felt like there was something wrong with Brooke York, who kept looking at her with a sinister smile.

Having finished her meal, Brooke York stood up, planted her hands on the table, and leaned forward. ”Chloe York, I hope you have a pleasant day!”

The crystal bun almost got stuck in her throat. She took a few sips of milk to wash it down. ”Have you gone crazy?”

After finishing breakfast, she walked to the entrance of Avallon. Evan Shaw’s car was already waiting there. The moment Chloe York appeared, the driver, knowing his cue, unlocked the car doors.

Evan Shaw, who had been reading a book, heard the click of the doors unlocking and looked out the window to see Chloe York.

He lowered the window. ”Chloe.”

She jogged to the car and got in. After sitting down, Chloe York took the box containing the Bluetooth earbuds from her backpack and gave it to Evan Shaw. ”This is for you!”

”Why are you suddenly giving me a gift?” He hadn’t expected Chloe York to give him a gift.

”Thank you for running with me the other night. It’s nothing expensive, so don’t feel bad about accepting it. It’s just a pair of Bluetooth earbuds that cost a few hundred.”

’Actually, for the Chloe York of her past life, buying someone earbuds worth several hundred was unthinkable. It was way too expensive; she herself still used a pair that only cost a few dozen!’

’But this was a novel world, and the description of Evan Shaw didn’t paint him as poor, so she had to buy a more expensive pair of Bluetooth earbuds like this.’

”Thank you!”

”You’re welcome. By the way, you don’t have to wait for me from now on. I can get to school on my own.”

The Bluetooth earbuds in his hand suddenly felt like a dividing line between him and Chloe York. Evan Shaw’s voice was tinged with sadness. ”I thought after these last few times, we were already friends. I didn’t think you were giving me earbuds to draw a line between us, that you didn’t want to be my friend!”

Hearing his voice, she turned her head and saw that Evan Shaw, who had always been all smiles around her, now had his head lowered. The soft bangs on his forehead fell, obscuring his eyes and brows. Only his clean-cut jawline was visible, clenched slightly, making for a particularly heart-wrenching sight.

’In the book, Evan Shaw was a loner, which was why even though he had a good family background and was handsome, his popularity was nowhere near Ethan Prescott’s.’

”That’s not what I meant. I just don’t want to trouble you.”

”How could it be a bother? You know I don’t have any friends at school. You’re my first friend.”

”Actually, if you try to make friends with other people, I’m sure you’ll make a lot of them.”

”They wouldn’t be willing to offend Ethan Prescott.”

’Chloe York really didn’t know how to answer that. What he said seemed to be true. Ethan Prescott’s family was incredibly wealthy. The author hadn’t detailed Evan Shaw’s family background, but it certainly couldn’t compare to Ethan’s; otherwise, he wouldn’t be living in Avallon like the York family.’

”It’s okay. If you don’t want to be friends with me, that’s fine too. It just means going back to how things were. If I don’t have friends, I don’t have friends!” Evan Shaw’s words were heartbreaking to hear.

”No, no, I’d love to be friends with you.”

”Really?”

”Really. You’re handsome, you’re a good student, and you’re very willing to help people. Didn’t you say I could ask you if there was anything I didn’t understand? As it happens, there’s something I don’t get.”

As she spoke, Chloe York took out her math test. She really couldn’t figure out the last major question.

”Let me see.” Evan Shaw took the test and looked at it. He pulled a pen from his own backpack and began to explain to Chloe York, ”Look, you can start by calculating this part here...”

By the time the car stopped, Chloe York completely understood how to do the final problem. She could even apply the concept to other problems; solution methods that had once been vague were now crystal clear.

Chloe York couldn’t help but give Evan Shaw a thumbs-up. ’He’s a recommended student for a reason,’ she thought. ’The moment he explained it, a problem that seemed as incomprehensible as astronomy suddenly became incredibly simple.’

”Thank you, Evan Shaw.”

”You’re welcome. From now on, you can ask me if you have any problems with your studies.”

”Okay, I definitely won’t hold back.”

Opening the car door, Chloe York and Evan Shaw got out, chatting as they walked into the school. Because they had been studying in the car, the driver had driven more slowly, so they arrived at school later than usual, and quite a few students noticed them.

The students they passed, whether they were fans of Ethan Prescott or Evan Shaw, or even just other male students, all started to gossip.

”Am I seeing things? Chloe York and Evan Shaw seem to be getting along really well!”

”Has Chloe York given up on Campus Prince Prescott and started sucking up to Evan Shaw instead?”

”I hope Campus Prince Shaw doesn’t get used by Chloe York. She’s just using you to make Ethan Prescott angry.”

”I feel like this is perfect material for a novel! ’My childhood sweetheart looks down on me, so I turn around and get with his mortal enemy, and my childhood sweetheart regrets it like crazy!’”

”Being handsome really makes a difference, huh? Why doesn’t Chloe York ever consider me? I might not be handsome, but at least if she confessed to me, she’d be guaranteed to get a boyfriend.”

By the time the two reached a fork in the path, waved goodbye, and headed to their respective classrooms, many students throughout the school had already started spreading the rumor that Chloe York and Evan Shaw might be dating.
