Three Systems Made the Fake Heiress Unstoppable

Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Ethan Prescott Sees Brooke York’s True Colors

”What? Chloe York, were you out fooling around? The York Family raised you, and not so you could go out and find your own men! Even if you were going to find one, *we* would be the ones to find him for you.” Hearing Brooke York’s words, Alice Cole instantly lost her composure.

They were still counting on Chloe York to bring benefits to the York Family. If she was no longer ’clean’ or her reputation was ruined, how could they marry her off?

”That’s right, sister. The man who dropped you off looked as old as Dad. You shouldn’t sink so low!” Brooke York said, looking at Chloe York smugly, the delight in her voice barely concealed.

”What a coincidence. This afternoon, I saw an old man drop you off too, Brooke!”

”What nonsense are you talking about? An old man didn’t bring me home. It was obviously the chauffeur who drove me.”

”I could hear you from the doorway. What’s all this racket about?” Miles York’s voice sounded from the entrance, and then he walked in.

”Darling, Chloe York is such a disgrace to our family! She didn’t come home for ages after school, and Caleb Sawyer had already brought Brooke back. But just now, believe it or not, an old man dropped Chloe York off.” Seeing Miles York, Alice Cole hurried over to tattle.

Sure enough, Miles York’s expression instantly darkened upon hearing this. He glared at Chloe York as if he could eat her alive.

”Chloe York, explain yourself.”

”A driver brought me home, too. Brooke told Mr. Sawyer not to wait for me and just left in the car. Am I not allowed to call for a car to take me home?”

Miles York turned his emotionless gaze toward Brooke York. He would not allow anyone to ruin his reputation.

When the story of the real and fake heiresses first broke, everyone praised his magnanimity for letting Chloe York continue to live in the York family home and enjoy the life of a wealthy young lady, even after his biological daughter had returned. This had elevated his company’s reputation to new heights, bringing in many more business partnerships.

He refused to let anyone say that he had cast aside the daughter he’d raised for over a decade now that his biological daughter had returned.

Brooke York trembled under Miles York’s gaze. She clenched her hands, suppressed her panic, and said calmly, ”Sister, you’re the one who said you wanted to run home. That’s why I told Mr. Sawyer to go on ahead!”

”I think I said that last week. I definitely didn’t say that this week!”

”But you didn’t tell me you wanted to take the car this week. Mr. Sawyer didn’t know either. He just saw me get in and drove off. You should have said something, sister.”

With just a few sentences, Brooke York skillfully shifted the blame onto Mr. Sawyer and Chloe York. One had driven off without asking any questions, and the other hadn’t bothered to say she needed a ride. She painted herself as the only innocent party.

”Enough,” Miles York declared. ”Starting tomorrow, you two will go to and from school together. The car won’t leave until both of you are present.”

Chloe York mimicked Brooke York’s earlier expression and shot her a smug look.

’I have to complete missions, but the Physical System can’t possibly give me running and walking tasks every time. Once those are done, it would be such a waste to spend my own money on the bus every day!’

Seeing Chloe York’s triumphant gaze, Brooke York gritted her teeth. She had lost to Chloe several times in the past few days.

Because of Miles York’s orders the night before, the car was waiting at the villa’s entrance when Chloe York came out the next day.

As she opened the car door and got in, Chloe York instantly felt two hostile gazes on her.

She knew Brooke York must have gotten in first and poisoned Mr. Sawyer’s mind against her.

Putting on an innocent act, she said, ”Sister, thank goodness you told Dad last night to have Mr. Sawyer wait for me. Otherwise, I would’ve had to take the bus this morning and then get a ride home from some other old man tonight. Thank you so much!”

Brooke York, who had been all smiles a moment ago, turned deathly pale at Chloe’s words. She subconsciously glanced toward the driver’s seat and, just as she expected, saw Mr. Sawyer staring at her with displeasure.

Although Mr. Sawyer was only the family chauffeur, he had worked for the York Family for decades. He had been with Miles York since they were both young men, and his importance to him was not to be underestimated.

Brooke York didn’t dare say anything more. ’Chloe York is too clever now; she always sees through my schemes.’

Brooke York didn’t cause any more trouble for the rest of the ride, and Chloe York was happy for the peace and quiet. She gazed out the window. ’It looks just like a modern city, but it’s actually the world of a novel.’

Coming to school in a private car was a whole different experience; it felt like no time at all before they pulled up to the school gates.

She opened the door, got out, and didn’t forget to call back to the driver’s seat, ”Mr. Sawyer, thank you for the ride!”

She remembered that the original Chloe York had always been polite like that.

Pleased that Chloe York had thanked him, Mr. Sawyer said cheerfully, ”Take care, Miss Felicia.”

”Mr. Sawyer, thank you for the ride!” Brooke York copied Chloe York, her tone sycophantic, but Mr. Sawyer gave no reaction.

She gripped the door handle and slammed it shut with a BANG.

’He’s just a driver. Here I am, the true young lady of the house, saying goodbye so politely, and he gives me the cold shoulder? Just you wait. The day I’m in charge of the York Family, the very first thing I’ll do is fire that Mr. Sawyer.’

Suddenly, she noticed a car pulling up nearby and recognized it as Ethan Prescott’s.

A scheme formed in her mind, and she jogged a few steps to catch up with Chloe York ahead.

”Chloe.”

A hand gripped her wrist, forcing Chloe York to a halt. Brooke York had already circled around to face her.

”What do you want?”

”Sister, I’m so sorry. I was wrong about yesterday. I shouldn’t have told Mom. Please, will you forgive me?” Brooke York asked, her expression pleading.

’This is too strange to be a coincidence,’ Chloe York thought, guessing that Ethan Prescott must be nearby.

An idea came to her, and Chloe York’s mood suddenly improved. She crossed her arms. ”Fine, I forgive you. And?”

Noticing Ethan Prescott approaching out of the corner of her eye, Brooke York timed her next words perfectly to ensure he would overhear. ”And... you can’t accept rides home from old men anymore. It will damage your reputation.”

”Fine. Are we done? I’m going,” Chloe York said, adjusting her backpack and walking straight into the school.

Brooke York looked up, pretending to have just noticed Ethan Prescott. Seeing him looking at her, she walked over. ”Last night, my sister came home in a luxury car, and there was an old man with her. I was so worried that I told Mom. She got really angry and scolded Chloe.”

”I told Chloe she can’t be doing things like that, but she thinks I did it on purpose. She even yelled at me... and now she’s ignoring me. Ethan, was I wrong?” After she finished, Brooke York lowered her head, her eyes welling with tears, looking utterly pitiful.

Looking at the pitiful girl before him, Ethan Prescott suddenly felt that this Brooke York was not the person he had thought she was.

’The person who took Chloe York home last night was clearly the driver his grandmother had sent. Yet Brooke York jumped to conclusions and accused Chloe of fooling around with an old man. Was she really as pure, innocent, and kind as he had imagined?’
