Rebirth before Apocalypse: My Whole Family are Bigshots!

Bai Xiqin made a gesture to Leng Yebai, indicating for him to kick open the door; their current rank was enough to crush the three inside.

Leng Yebai nodded and kicked the door with force.

With a loud bang, the door fell to the ground, stirring up a cloud of dust.

The three people instinctively looked inside the courtyard.

They were stunned at a glance.

Sunlight shone on the seemingly small courtyard, which still contained those iron cages Bai Yifan had seen last time.

The zombies in the cages were still there.

They didn’t emit any howling, just curled motionlessly in the cages, occasionally trembling.

An intense scent of blood assaulted their senses, blood splattered on the courtyard floor, yet it didn’t drive the zombies in the cages into a frenzy.

In the center of the courtyard stood a young man exuding a murderous aura.

A trace of shock still hung on the young man’s face as he gazed blankly toward the door.

His hands were covered in red blood.

On the ground lay three corpses.

There was a gaping hole right in the center of each corpse’s chest.

Obviously, they had been pierced directly by the young man’s fingers.

”Xiao Ming, what are you doing here?”

Bai Xiqin was momentarily stunned as she looked at Zhang Yiming, who exuded such malice.

Rarely had she seen Zhang Yiming, who preferred gentle sunshine, in such a violent scene.

Zhang Yiming instinctively hid his blood-soaked fingers behind him, his malicious aura dissipating instantly, and he lowered his head, avoiding Bai Xiqin’s gaze.

His fingers gently rubbed, trying to hide the corpses on the ground.

”I...”

Zhang Yiming’s lips moved, but he could say nothing.

The fingers behind his back rubbed vigorously against his clothes, struggling to remove that rich scent of blood.

Zhang Yiming stood there awkwardly, clenching his fingers tightly, lips pressed together like a child caught doing something wrong.

He hadn’t expected that such a scene would be witnessed by Xiao Niu.

”Why did you take justice into your own hands ahead of schedule?”

Leng Yebai glanced at the three corpses on the ground and said lightly,

”We were planning to do it ourselves!”

Leng Yebai’s voice was indifferent, as ordinary as eating or drinking.

It seemed killing wasn’t something that was too burdensome.

Yet Zhang Yiming’s face remained pale, his eyes fixed on the ground, silent.

”Xiao Ming, did you discover their trafficking in human survivor crystal cores, or was it something else?”

Bai Xiqin pretended not to see Zhang Yiming’s tension, not looking at his rigid body, deliberately changing the subject.

She somewhat understood Zhang Yiming’s feelings.

Becoming a zombie was miserable enough, and she believed he cared about others’ views of him, and he usually treated people kindly. To suddenly have others see him in such a bloody scene, he surely feared they’d think him brutal.

He was likely afraid others would see him as a bloodthirsty monster!

”Yes, they planned to raid the safety base.” Zhang Yiming said softly.

”Why?”

Bai Xiqin looked at the three corpses on the ground, puzzled.

On the surface, their superpowers seemed high, particularly the cook and the contractor, whose superpower fluctuations could rival Bai Xiqin’s post-breakthrough levels.

But the safety base had formidable base commanders, and besides the commander, there were many high-rank superpower users.

Where did they get such confidence?

”They planned to poison the water supply, for those crystal cores.” Zhang Yiming explained.

While Zhang Yiming spoke, he never once looked into Bai Xiqin’s eyes, only occasionally raising his eyes cautiously toward her, quickly lowering them when she returned his gaze.

His long eyelashes trembled in the sunlight.

Beautiful, yet fragile.

”Poison the water?”

Bai Anhai looked at the three corpses on the ground, frowning tightly.

If someone truly poisoned within the safety base, it’s conceivable that just three people could loot the entire base.

But just these three, could they really achieve such a feat?

”Just these three?”

Bai Xiqin also doubted these three could do it.

”There are others.”

Zhang Yiming, rubbing his red-stained fingers against himself, took a paper from the butcher stall owner’s body.

Zhang Yiming half-squatted, holding the paper up to Bai Xiqin, trying to cover his blood-stained fingers with the white paper, eyes avoiding Bai Xiqin’s gaze.

After Bai Xiqin took the paper, Zhang Yiming quickly withdrew his fingers, standing silently aside, his hands again behind his back.

The white paper was already stained with red blood, yet the writing was still visible.

It depicted a rough sketch, showing a general outline of the safety base, with marked positions in red representing where the survivors lived.

Other marked locations likely indicated spots for poisoning.

These places were the base’s cafeteria or water reservoirs.

Ordinary people had no opportunity to poison here—only those stationed or with access could do so.

Meaning someone in the safety base had been bribed.

They intended to pull off a big score!

The crystal cores harvested from hordes of zombies took the survivors of the Yunhua Safety Base a whole day and night to collect.

These crystal cores were at Yunhua Safety Base, enough to tempt anyone.

Everyone understands that people die for riches, birds die for food.

Hence, the safety base always guarded against intruders from other bases trying to seize crystal cores.

No one expected that some within the base sought not just to collect cores but to kill everyone else within!

The Yunhua Safety Base had tens of thousands of survivors!

It was the largest safety base in Shanghai.

Survivors were already scarce, yet they planned to target those who stood against zombies with them, just for those crystal cores!

Bai Xiqin and the two others were stunned, feeling a chill from their feet.

”Don’t worry, it’s fine now.” Zhang Yiming said softly.

There was a trace of sadness in Zhang Yiming’s eyes.

If he had known Xiao Niu was coming, he wouldn’t have used such bloody means.

The rampant emotions in his head could usually be controlled but faltered when Xiao Niu’s safety was involved, his reason entirely collapsing.

His only thought was to kill all who threatened her.

He realized he overestimated himself; he thought he could manage perfectly.

Yet he still instinctively used the bloodiest methods to torture enemies, letting them perish gruesomely...

Bloodlust, fury, had become ingrained within his very bones.

Despite his desperate restraint, some signs slipped through discreetly.

The scent of blood on his hands clung like a parasite, refusing to disperse.

Zhang Yiming subconsciously moved a couple of steps toward the door, wanting to leave this place, but forcibly stopped himself.
