Chapter 90: Chapter 49 Inciting by the Clansmen

Gu Changsheng disdainfully glanced at the crowd, thinking that they could use their numbers to force her into submission—what wishful thinking!

Sometimes, having only quantity without quality meant that no matter how many people there were, they were merely cannon fodder.

“Old Lady Wang, first you blocked me from seeing patients and then you smashed my door and acted outrageously—truly, you have angered me,” she stated indifferently, as if the matter did not concern her at all.

Without reason, Old Lady Wang shivered, but she persisted in her wailing and accusations, probably about how Gu Changsheng had caused someone’s death…

“Witch, you’ve killed someone and you still have the audacity to show up!”

“Exactly! Repaying a life for a life and a debt with money is the righteous way of the world. Lady Changsheng, you really are so unreasonable.”

...

“Right! You killed Butcher Wang, so you should graciously compensate the Wang family as you should.”

……

The more Gu Changsheng listened, the more irritated she became—she was truly fed up with this kind of shrewish and unreasonable harassment!

The world may slander me, insult me, disparage me, mock me, bully me, and belittle me—I will not endure, dodge, avoid, be patient with, allow, respect, or ignore them. That’s all nonsense! Gu Changsheng wouldn’t wait for so-called karma; what pleased her was immediate retribution!

“Old Lady Wang, do you think I, Gu Changsheng, am some kind of naive and gullible person who would let you run amok and fish in troubled waters?” Gu Changsheng interrupted the crowd’s condemnation, her face frosty, “Compensation? Put aside whether Butcher Wang is dead or alive, you dreaming of compensation is complete delusion!”

She, Gu Changsheng, only excelled at amassing wealth—asking her to compensate? Impossible!

She worked hard to save people, and she hadn’t even earned a single wen in consultation fees. Not only had she been subjected to a load of nonsense, but people also came to her door to bully her. How could she be happy with that?

If she wasn’t happy, surely those who made her unhappy should be unhappy too!

“As a doctor, doing one’s utmost is the duty; life and death are destined, and wealth and honor are in the hands of Heaven. If the death of every patient should be borne by the doctor, and everyone were as brazen as you in demanding compensation, then how could doctors continue?” Gu Changsheng’s tone was getting far from pleasant—rigid and icy, and her hands were clenched tightly.

“What destiny and fate? This woman is a murderer who won’t pay for her crimes, compensate my son! Pay with money!” Old Lady Wang leaped up from the ground and reached out to claw at Gu Changsheng’s face.

Gu Changsheng’s Phoenix Eyes narrowed, and a cold glint flashed through them. With a sweep of her bright red dress, she lifted her leg and delivered a kick!

The crowd was stunned; Gu Changsheng’s actions were so fast that they couldn’t react in time.

They hadn’t expected that Gu Changsheng would so directly kick Old Lady Wang!

Uncle Song, who had rushed over, looked in frustration at Old Lady Wang, knocked to the ground, and then at the shocked crowd whose expression turned to anger, and he felt anxious inside.

He knew that Lady Changsheng would surely bungle things!

“Uncle Song!” Xiao Cui pulled at Uncle Song, who wanted to step forward, and glanced at her own Lady Changsheng with sympathy, advising, “Uncle Song, let Lady Changsheng handle it. She once said that life is full of frustrations and there’s no need to compromise overly.”

Uncle Song, upon hearing this, was taken aback and looked up to see his own Lady Changsheng’s furious face. His heart ached as well. That was right; Lady Changsheng had been pampered since childhood and never worried about her livelihood. Now, not only did she have to support the Gu Family, but she also had to be a public doctor and face the patients. How could he let her be upset and still swallow her pride?

So, let her handle it. What is a reputation but a burden? As long as Lady Changsheng is at ease, that’s what mattered.

“Lady Changsheng, what are you doing? In broad daylight, you assault someone—have you no respect for the law?” someone stepped forward, helping the hurting Old Lady Wang from the ground and scolding furiously!

“The law? Which family’s law allows you to come uninvited, to pick a fight at my doorstep?”

“You think because I’m a widow and orphan that I can be easily bullied, is that it?” Gu Changsheng put one foot on the chair, her aura aggressive and overbearing, “As the saying goes, no one goes to work early without the prospect of gain. You all follow Old Lady Wang to make a scene, whether you’re hiding personal motives behind a facade of righteousness I don’t care, but Old Lady Wang keeps clamoring for compensation. Fine, I can’t be bothered with nonsensical words with you any longer—speak, what compensation do you want?”

“If you dare to ask for it, then dare I to give it!” Having said that, Gu Changsheng kicked over the chair and stood there, bristling with menace, waiting for their next move.

Seeing her like this, Old Lady Wang felt even more uneasy, and after exchanging glances with the man behind her, knowing she couldn’t miss the opportunity, she had to speak, “I want… the Gu Family’s… medical books…”

“Ha ha…” Gu Changsheng was taken aback, then burst into laughter, her mirth unbridled, utterly disregarding the increasingly dark look on Old Lady Wang’s face.

“All this for a medical book!” Gu Changsheng finished speaking and stared directly at Old Lady Wang, “Old Lady Wang, who is that sleazy man behind you?”

The momentary exchange of glances between them had certainly not escaped Gu Changsheng’s notice. Her slender Red Phoenix Eyes narrowed slightly, her instincts telling her that it was the sleazy man with the droopy brows who was the key!

“He… he is…” Old Lady Wang hesitated on her face, having difficulty on how to respond.

The sleazy man who was called out stepped forward and brazenly stood in front of Gu Changsheng, not showing the slightest fear. After all, she was just a woman, no matter how imposing, it was probably just for intimidation, “Gu Changsheng, there’s no need to pretend like we are strangers. I’m Gu Saner!”

Upon hearing this, Gu Changsheng was taken aback once more. Family? Surnamed Gu?

In this life as well as her past, although Gu wasn’t considered a rare surname, it was certainly not so common that it could be found everywhere on the streets.

Damn! This sleazy guy couldn’t really be related to her, could he?

“My lady, he is Gu Saner from the main branch of the Gu family at the back street.” Uncle Song quickly stepped forward to explain, his gaze towards Gu Saner filled with anger.

After mulling over this information, Gu Changsheng discerned the crux of the matter. She was always straightforward, and asked right away, “Was it you who incited Old Lady Wang to make trouble, all for the medical texts left by my grandfather, is that correct?”

Gu Saner clearly had not expected Gu Changsheng to ask so bluntly. His eyes shifted, but he didn’t refute, “That’s correct, I did incite her. What about it? The medical texts left by Doctor Gu Chengyi should belong to the main family. My coming to claim them isn’t anything shameful.”

“Three Scabby! Have you no shame!” As soon as he finished talking, Uncle Song was the first to become upset, cursing vehemently, “Old Grand Master was too kind back in the days, offering the Silver to the main family without fail. It has raised the likes of you, a brazen hooligan with no sense of decency. The main family? When the Old Grand Master had trouble, where was the main family? When Madam suffered in the Capital City, how many times did I seek help at your doorsteps? And what did you do? Yet you have the gall to claim the medical skills should belong to you—should we just allow you to rob us?”

Gu Changsheng silently watched Uncle Song’s rampage. This farce had clearly gotten out of hand, involving a clash over family interests. What should she say?

“Who do you think you are? You’re nothing but a servant, not fit to speak here!” Gu Saner contemptuously shoved Uncle Song aside.

That shove incensed Gu Changsheng. Damn it, the so-called control through obligation. Listening to Uncle Song’s tone, the main family had clearly taken plenty of benefits from the Old Grand Master, and now they had the audacity to act so arrogantly as if it was their rightful due?

“Who do you think you are? Even if Uncle Song is a servant, he’s mine! Don’t presume to order him around!” Gu Changsheng kicked out fiercely. This kick was considerably stronger than the previous one; Damn! Even when beating a dog, you have to see who its owner is. Did they take her for a decoration?

“Gu Changsheng! How dare you hit me!” Gu Saner scrambled up from the ground indignantly, his face filled with resentment as he shouted, “Think about your son. I heard you’ve brought him back. Without the approval of our branch, he will always be a bastard, never a part of the Gu family, doomed to never hold his head high!”

Everyone watched, perplexed by the scene that had degenerated into a family fracas, clueless about the situation. Old Lady Wang also wisely took a few steps back.

“My lady, Gu Saner is the son of the Clan Leader from our main branch.” Uncle Song hesitated, showing a look of difficulty on his face.

Gu Saner was right. Without the Gu family’s recognition, Young Master, even with Gu in his registered name, couldn’t be included in the family genealogy or be considered part of the Gu family.

The ancient belief and loyalty to one’s clan cannot be said to be insubstantial.

But clearly, Gu Changsheng scorned such notions. She laughed haughtily, her voice imbued with disdain and contempt as she looked down upon Gu Saner from a lofty position, “My surname, Gu Changsheng, is not something for you to trifle with!”

“My son Gu Ze, bears my surname as his own, and the name I have given him. As long as I, Gu Changsheng, live for another day, he is my son, beyond question. Just because you’re from the so-called main branch, you, a petty clown like Gu Saner, dare to use this to threaten me?”

“You! You’re defying the teachings of our ancestors!” Gu Saner stepped back incredulously, unable to believe that someone would boldly claim to not need the protection of their family.

“Defying the teachings of our ancestors? Bullshit! I, Gu Changsheng, have never consumed a single grain from the main family, never drunk a drop of water from them. When I was trapped in the Capital City, where was the main family? When I brought my son back home, was there even a hint of concern from the main family?” Gu Changsheng huffed coldly, continuing, “Gu Saner, you’ve schemed and plotted, even stooping to threaten me with my son, all for the medical texts left by my grandfather, isn’t that so?”

Gu Changsheng glanced at a familiar figure outside the door, cursed silently to herself, and then turned to instruct, “Uncle Song, go fetch the medical texts compiled by my grandfather.”

Uncle Song was startled to hear this but still obeyed and went to the backyard to fetch the medical texts.

Gu Changsheng ignored the strange atmosphere that had taken hold in the hall and settled her anger. She found a chair with a seductive poise and sat down gracefully, and Xiao Cui very perceptively brought over a cup of tea.

Uncle Song returned quickly, holding the medical texts in both hands.

Gu Changsheng glanced at the medical texts, a cunning smile on her lips, “Gu Saner, isn’t this the medical text you’ve been obsessing over? Let everyone bear witness, take a good look. This is the medical text newly compiled by my grandfather, every word and stroke from his own hand.”

Some doctors in the crowd came forward upon hearing this, flipping through the pages and nodding simultaneously, “This is undoubtedly the medical text compiled by Elder Gu.”

“Uncle Song, give him the medical text!” Gu Changsheng sipped her tea, her lips puckering slightly towards Gu Saner as a signal.
