Flash Marriage: He is a Wife-pampering Addict

Chapter 840: 839 say thank you in person

Wen Ran returned home, took a shower, and had just climbed into bed when her phone rang.

She picked up the phone and a smile spread across her fair, delicate face upon seeing the caller ID. She pressed the answer button and cheerfully said, “Bro!”

“Ranran, have you gone to sleep?”

Gu Kai’s voice came through, warm and pleasant to listen to, very pleasing to the ear.

Wen Ran leaned back against the headboard, casually picked up a pillow to prop behind her, and comfortably adjusted her position, “I was just about to sleep. You’re not calling to chat with me at this late hour, are you, Bro?”

“Haha, your brother can’t sleep, so I thought I’d chat with you. If you bought me gifts every day, then I’d be too happy to sleep every night.”

...
“Pfft—”

Wen Ran laughed, “If you put it that way, I’ll never buy you gifts again, so I don’t disturb your sleep. Don’t you have a surgery tomorrow? What if you don’t sleep and it affects the surgery?”

“Speaking of surgery, Ranran, do you know something happened at the hospital today?”

Gu Kai’s question was casual, not showing that he was calling specifically for this issue.

Wen Ran asked with surprise, “What happened?”

“A patient’s relative had a bit of a conflict with Yuting. Mo Xiuchen didn’t tell you?” Gu Kai’s tone suggested it wasn’t a big deal.

However, what does it have to do with Shen Yuting and Mo Xiuchen?

Wen Ran’s eyes flickered and she said softly, “No, Mo Xiuchen didn’t mention it. Did a patient’s relative cause trouble for Sister Ting? But what does it have to do with Mo Xiuchen? Was he there too?”

“Mmm, Mo Xiuchen just happened to be there and it was thanks to him catching Yuting in time that she didn’t get pushed down by that relative. I heard about it from a nurse, I didn’t see it with my own eyes.”

In the end, Gu Kai added, “I thought Mo Xiuchen would have told you, because he usually tells you everything.”

“He didn’t, maybe Mo Xiuchen thought it wasn’t worth mentioning.”

Wen Ran spoke lightly, but her mind wandered back to Shen Yuting’s question in the restaurant’s restroom earlier that evening, and her brow furrowed slightly, dismissing the wild guesses in her heart.

Sister Ting was just showing concern for her, and she and Jiang Liu have been together for so long, they certainly wouldn’t have any other thoughts.

“Perhaps. Ranran, it’s getting late, you’d better go to sleep. I’m going to take a shower and get ready for bed as well.” Gu Kai yawned on the other end of the line, his tone carrying a hint of weariness.

Wen Ran said goodnight with a laugh and hung up.

At the same time, Mo Xiuchen received a call from Shen Yuting.

Mo Xiuchen hadn’t driven Wen Ran home tonight. Their dinner had ended just as Wen Jin finished his social obligations, and since both were at Yi Pin Xuan Pavilion, Wen Ran had taken a ride back with Wen Jin.

Mo Xiuchen had gone to the hospital to see Mo Jingteng and had just returned home. He hadn’t even gotten out of the car when his phone began to ring.

Seeing the string of numbers on the caller ID, Mo Xiuchen’s brows knitted slightly, his long finger pressed the answer button, and he answered in a deep, indifferent voice, “Hello?”

“Mo Xiuchen, it’s me, Yuting.”

As soon as her words ended, a cheerful and soft voice came through, belonging to Shen Yuting, who had dined with them that evening.

Hearing that she was Wen Ran’s cousin and Gu Kai’s cousin, Mo Xiuchen responded indifferently with an “Oh,” “What’s the matter?”

“Mo Xiuchen, I’m calling just to say thank you.”

Shen Yuting’s voice carried a hint of laughter, soft and pleasant. After a half-second pause, she immediately explained, “I really owe you for this afternoon. If you hadn’t caught me in time, I would’ve definitely fallen to the ground. Even if I didn’t get hurt, it would have been quite embarrassing right there.”

“This afternoon?”

Mo Xiuchen had already forgotten about the afternoon’s events.

“Xiuchen, you couldn’t have forgotten so soon, could you? This afternoon…”

Shen Yuting patiently explained over the phone, turning his act of chivalrously coming to her aid into a vivid and beautiful tale. If Mo Xiuchen hadn’t been there himself, merely happening by and reaching out to help her after seeing her pushed, he might have believed he truly played the hero.

“Oh, it was just a coincidence, I’ve already forgotten about it. You don’t need to dwell on it either.” Mo Xiuchen opened his car door and got out, striding with his long legs toward the living room in the distance.

“Xiuchen, I’m not ungrateful. You saved me, and that’s that. I must say thank you in person. Xiuchen, thank you.”

“Hmm, is there anything else?”

In the yard, all was silent. Mo Xiuchen’s tall figure was enveloped in the moonlight spreading from the sky, casting a faint gloss over his features that were as handsome as a sculpture, making him even more stunningly attractive.

“Xiuchen, the newspaper you saw in the cab that day, it was placed by me.”

Shen Yuting hesitated before speaking softly.

“I know.”

Mo Xiuchen’s voice was calm and without ripples, showing none of the gratitude she had hoped for.

Shen Yuting had wanted to hear a word of thanks from him, but his indifferent “I know” made it seem as if she was fishing for compliments.

“Hehe, I just think that a woman like Cheng Jia isn’t good enough for you. Even if you and Ranran can’t be together, you should not be with Cheng Jia either.”

Shen Yuting laughed somewhat awkwardly, thankful that the phone hid her expression. If they had been face to face, she was unsure if she could have endured the piercing scrutiny of Mo Xiuchen’s eagle-like gaze.

“Hmm.”

Mo Xiuchen simply uttered a monosyllabic sound, uninterested in her words and even less in chatting with her.

The call had turned rather cold.

Shen Yuting didn’t want to hang up. Since that afternoon’s incident, Mo Xiuchen’s handsome face, his deep eyes, and the word “careful” he had said, filled her thoughts, along with the quickened heartbeat she hadn’t experienced in a long while when she had fallen into his arms.

“Xiuchen, Ranran once swore to Cheng Jia that if she returned to your side, all her relatives and people she cared about would die terrible deaths. So, you mustn’t blame her. There’s really nothing going on between her and Qin Mu.”

Shen Yuting’s words, seemingly meant to explain, did have some impact on Mo Xiuchen who had lost his memory.

This evening at Yi Pin Xuan Pavilion, she returned to the private room first, and Mo Xiuchen’s displeasure was evident when he inquired about Wen Ran and she mentioned Wen Ran seeking help from Qin Mu.

At this moment, her explanations seemed more like an attempt to cover up something.

Although Mo Xiuchen trusted that Ranran would not betray him, he also believed Ah Mu would not betray him.

Still, his mood was heavy. Thinking about Ah Mu leaping off the cliff for Ranran and how, during his absence, Ah Mu had kept her company so well, it felt as if a boulder pressed against his chest, making it hard to breathe.

“I know, there’s nothing going on between Ranran and Ah Mu.”

There was an almost imperceptible stiffness in Mo Xiuchen’s tone. He remembered asking Wen Ran about something she did not want to disclose that evening. He closed his eyes and the grip on his phone tightened slightly.
