“Kangning Hospital

When Wen Ran entered the ward, the male special nursing assistant had just finished bathing her brother and was giving him a massage.

The man on the bed, if his face wasn’t so pale, would seem as though he was sleeping—peaceful and handsome.

Wen Ran asked the special nursing assistant to leave, so she could chat with her brother for a while. After a ‘okay’, the nurse tidied up Wen Jin’s clothes and left the ward.

Wen Ran pulled up a chair by the bedside, took Wen Jin’s hand that was resting on the edge, gently massaging it while smiling, “Brother, I have good news, I learned how to cook. The night before last, I made sweet and sour pork ribs for mom and dad…”

She repeated everything she had told her parents that night to Wen Jin. With no response but heavy silence, a sour feeling rose in her nose, a spoiled hint in her voice, “Brother, if you don’t wake up, I really am going to stop talking to you.”

But, even if she made threats, Wen Jin still laid there undisturbed, unresponsive, and not knowing whether he could hear her words.

Just then, there were two knocks on the door. She quickly wiped away her tears and looked towards the entrance. The ward door was being pushed open and Doctor Gu Kai, dressed in a white coat, was standing gracefully at the doorway.

“Doctor Gu!”

Wen Ran’s eyes flickered, she stood up from the chair, steadying the sorrow in her heart.

As Gu Kai caught sight of her teary eyes, a flicker of light passed through his own. A soft smile appeared on his handsome face as he approached, “Did I interrupt your conversation with your brother?”

Managing a strained smile, Wen Ran replied, “No, actually I needed to speak with you.”

“Oh, what’s the matter? Is it regarding your brother?”

Gu Kai’s brows raised in curiosity.

Wen Ran glanced at her brother on the hospital bed and whispered, “Not about my brother. Let’s discuss this in your office. It’s about something else.”

A flash of surprise passed through Gu Kai’s eyes, then he agreed: “Alright, I will have the special nursing assistant look after your brother.”

“Okay”

Wen Ran bent down to place Wen Jin’s hand under the blanket, and then followed Gu Kai to his office.

“Would you like green tea or yogurt?”

In front of the sofa, Gu Kai made a gesture towards Wen Ran, asking politely.

“No need, I’m not thirsty.”

Wen Ran politely refused; in the past few days, she had avoided cold beverages, and both options Gu Kai had mentioned were kept in the refrigerator.

Hearing her refusal, he didn’t insist. He walked over to his desk, grabbed a water bottle, returned to the sofa, twisted the cap off, took a sip, and gently watched Wen Ran. ‘What did you want to discuss?”

Wen Ran moistened her lips, considering how to ask the question. This question had occupied her mind for several days and she had always wanted to ask him.

Gu Kai reclined lazily on the sofa, holding his thermos, looking with warm affection at the woman opposite him, absorbing her every subtle change in expression.

At lunch a few days ago, he had declared that he knew everything about MO Xiuchen. So if Wen Ran was not here for her brother, it should be about MO Xiuchen.

Wen Ran blinked a few times, met Gu Kai’s probing eyes, and somewhat awkwardly said, “Yes, it’s regarding MO Xiuchen. I’d like to consult with you.”

A teasing smile played on Gu Kai’s lips. “Just ask, I assure you, I will disclose everything I know.”

Gu Kai’s teasing remark dispelled the hesitations in Wen Ran’s heart. She got straight to the point and said, “I want to know, what exactly is the situation with MO Xiuchen’s health?”

Gu Kai’s hand, which was turning the cup, paused slightly and surprise flickered in his eyes. He certainly didn’t expect Wen Ran to ask this question What exactly is the situation with MO Xiuchen’s health.

He understood what that sentence meant without needing further clarification.

Looking into Wen Ran’s caring eyes, as clear and pure as water, he had a strange feeling that lying to her would be a heinous crime.

His hesitation caused a sinking feeling in Wen Ran’s heart.

The reason she came to Gu Kai was not only because he was a doctor, but also because he was MO Xiuchen’s good friend. She believed he knew the exact situation in both capacities.

In the beginning, she thought that MO Xiuchen was truly impotent, but after spending these days with him, she had begun to doubt it. She had seen changes in him, had been kissed by him…

That night, if her period hadn’t arrived suddenly, she felt like everything would have happened. It wasn’t that she particularly desired to consummate her marriage with MO Xiuchen or was desperate, rather she simply wished from the bottom of her heart that he was a healthy man.

Seeing the troubled look in Gu Kai’s eyes, a pallor appeared on her face; her hands clasped on the table tightening subtly. She moistened her lips and said softly, “Doctor Gu, I know the whole G city is buzzing with MO Xiuchen’s impotency. To be honest, we’ve been married for a long time and have yet to consummate it.”

At this point, her voice paused slightly, noticing a change in Gu Kai’s expression. She continued with a hint of sorrow, “Just this afternoon, nanny Zhang told me that MO Xiuchen saw his mother commit suicide when he was eight years old. Three years later, he was kidnapped, and somehow survived, returning home only to discover that…’

“As his wife, I want him to be happy. Naturally, I want him to be healthy as well. Please tell me the truth, is his ‘illness’ curable?”

The composure on Gu Kai’s face wavered. Wen Ran hadn’t said anything particularly moving, just recounting the facts, expressing her thoughts, and her attitude towards the marriage.

However, as MO Xiuchen’s good friend, he felt genuinely glad for him. Regardless of the reason why MO Xiuchen married her, she had put her heart into their marriage.

“His illness…is not incurable,” he replied vaguely. She had just said they hadn’t consummated their marriage and he hadn’t received MO Xiuchen’s approval, so he dared not reveal his secret lightly.

Wen Ran’s eyes light up. She looked at him intently, “Doctor Gu, do you mean that MO Xiuchen’s illness can be cured? Has he been treated over these years?”

Gu Kai was stuck again and cursed MO Xiuchen silently in his heart. His eyes flickered slightly, he sighed lightly, and then said, “MO Xiuchen is very stubborn. I tried to treat him before but I don’t know how effective the treatments were. He has a serious clean freak problem and would feel sick and annoyed when any female approached him. Not to even mention trying.”

Wen Ran’s eyes widened in surprise and she asked incredulously, “Are you saying that MO Xiuchen dislikes women and can’t stand them approaching

him?”
