Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 610: Chapter 612: Du Zhongshu’s Questioning

Bai Ruozhu returned to the Main Hall and quietly told the old Madam Meng, ”I confirm that the maid drowned, showing no signs of poisoning. I am unsure about the rest.”

The old lady nodded, ”She may have been blackmailed and willingly ended her own life.”

Bai Ruozhu didn’t reply, her heart felt stifled. Not because she empathised with the maid, the maid who nearly harmed Yu Hongxiu and her unborn child deserved this fate. However, the loss of such a young life still made her sigh.

Lady Wang was brought back to the Main Hall. Bai Ruozhu retreated to the side and quietly inquired Tu Ying, ”Do you know anything about Lady Wang?”

Scratching her chin in thought, Tu Ying replied, ”A little. Her husband is a registrar in Beiyu city, a generally decent man except for his many concubines. Lady Wang comes from a wealthy trading family who has continuously supported the Wang family.”

In Danliang Country, the position of registrar only existed in larger cities. It wasn’t a particularly high position, but it shouldn’t be underestimated.

”What’s Lady Wang’s maiden surname? What kind of business do they do?” asked Bai Ruozhu.

”Surname Zhou. They’re in the cloth business. As far as I know, the Wang family has no grudges with Xie Dun.” Tu Ying pondered, frowning, ”Why would she want to harm Xie’s wife?”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t figure it out either. But if someone claimed this was all a coincidence, she would never believe it. Especially considering Lady Wang’s overacting, she started crying for Ruyue as soon as she heard about the suicide, without even seeing the body.

This could only mean one thing— she knew beforehand that Ruyue would commit suicide.

Bai Ruozhu rubbed her temples and said, ”Let’s leave the investigation to the government. Our speculations are pointless.”

Tu Ying nodded, ”You go take care of Lady Xie. I’m going to say goodbye to the old lady. We have disturbed her for a long time.”

Bai Ruozhu noticed how well this girl understood the interpersonal relations and yet didn’t hesitate to pursue her second brother, realizing her brother truly met his match this time.

At this moment, Mr. Xie arrived and was somewhat emotional about visiting Yu Hongxiu. Seeing this, Bai Ruozhu quickly reminded him, ”Sir, Sister Hongxiu is alright now. She needs a stable emotional state and just fell asleep. It might be better not to disturb her. Why not visit the old lady first?”

Mr. Xie thanked Bai Ruozhu, ”Thank you, Ruozhu. If you hadn’t been here, I dread to think what could’ve happened.”

”I’m going to prepare the medicine. When Sister Hongxiu wakes up, you should stay with her, say something cheerful. Don’t let her feel burdened. Your aunt’s incident made her feel emotionally unwell and endangered her health; she shouldn’t have such a close scare otherwise.” Bai Ruozhu said sternly.

Mr. Xie looked remorseful, ”You’re right, I will keep her company.”

Then, Bai Ruozhu prepared the medicinal decoction while Mr. Xie went to see the old lady. When Bai Ruozhu prepared the medicine and assigned a maid to look after the fire, returning to the Main Hall, Wang Miaoshuang had left, but the second lady had not.

Seeing the second lady’s poor complexion and remembering how she was already ill before, Bai Ruozhu quickly walked over and offered, ”I can take your pulse, Second Lady.”

The Second Lady thanked her with a smile, ”It’s just a common cold causing some headache. I’ve taken some medicine. I should be fine in a couple of days.”

Bai Ruozhu took her pulse and it was indeed as the Second Lady had said, only that having been out in the wind had probably made her headache worse.

”Second lady, let me massage you a bit. It will relieve your headache,” offered Bai Ruozhu, grateful that the Second Lady had greatly helped them out that day and wanting to ease her pain.

The Second Lady didn’t refuse Bai Ruozhu’s help. Soon after Bai Ruozhu started massaging her head’s acupuncture points, the Second Lady felt her headache lessen considerably, and her overall comfort increased notably.

Later, Yu Hongxiu’s medicine soup was ready. Bai Ruozhu woke her up and watched her finish drinking the soup before leaving the couple alone in the room. She then took Guizhi to bid farewell to the old lady.

The old lady’s mood was not good that day. She looked extremely fatigued. She sighed and said softly, ”Ruozhu, do you think I was wrong to let go and ignore things? Look at the miasma clouding this residence now.”

Bai Ruozhu was stunned. She did not expect the old lady to ask her about this matter. It was the Meng Family’s affair and it was inappropriate for her to comment.

However, facing the old lady’s worn-out and helpless gaze, she pitied her and spoke, ”Madam, if you want peace of mind, you can’t worry about everything. How could you be at peace then? As for...” She paused,” descendants have their own luck, I guess.”

”Descendants have their own luck, you’re right, I can control it for a while, but I can’t control it forever, well, let it be.” The old lady seemed to have figured it out, and her mood wasn’t as low as before.

In fact, this incident should have nothing to do with Wang Miaoshuang or the Meng Residence. However, the Meng Residence did not show the ability to handle the issue as a military family should. Both the servants and the mistress were inadequate, so it was no wonder the old lady was upset.

Bai Ruozhu did not linger. She took Guizhi and bid farewell to the old lady, promising to come and see Yu Hongxiu early the next morning.

When the two of them got to the outer courtyard of the Meng Residence, they saw Bai Zepei standing beside the horse carriage as if he had been waiting for a long time. His slender figure looked somewhat thin, standing there in the cold wind, his nose turning red.

Bai Ruozhu’s heart ached, and she hurried over. She knew the reason her second brother was waiting here was out of concern for her.

”Second Brother, why didn’t you wait in the carriage?” Bai Ruozhu complained.

Bai Zepei smiled faintly and replied, ”It’s okay, let’s go home and talk.”

Bai Ruozhu nodded, about to get into the carriage, but a figure suddenly darted out from the other end of the yard, calling out to her, ”Miss Bai, wait a moment.”

Bai Ruozhu turned to look. It was Du Zhongshu. He came out at just the right moment. He must have been hiding there waiting for quite some time.

She looked coldly at Du Zhongshu and asked, ”What can I do for you, Lord Du?”

”I already know about what happened in the inner courtyard.” Du Zhongshu approached and said with a dark face.

”Oh, so you didn’t know about this drama from the very beginning, Lord Du.” Bai Ruozhu said sarcastically.

Du Zhongshu furrowed his brows, and then suddenly lifted his drooping head to glare at Bai Ruozhu and said, ”I admit that I knew about my family’s intentions and didn’t stop them, all because I had a fixation on you. But I didn’t know they would go this far; I’m not as terrible as you think!”

Bai Ruozhu chuckled coldly, ”I have clearly rejected you, yet you silently approved of your family’s actions. How is that not terrible?”

Du Zhongshu was taken aback, then his face broke into a sorrowful smile. She was heartless, and he was obsessed. Was it because he was getting worse?

He looked at Bai Ruozhu with some deep feelings, ”Fine, I admit I’m not a gentleman, but was it really okay for you to drag Fuling into this?”
