Facing an Ancient God for a Year

Chapter 2330: Chapter 2325: Checklist (12)

It didn’t even look like he was simply paying his respects.

In the noisy night, the abstract level of Cardon’s behavior had clearly climbed to a new high.

And the old man was so absorbed in what he was doing that even Fu Qian, watching from the side, couldn’t help feeling a bit impressed for a moment.

Down on one knee, but the odds of it being a proposal were probably pretty low.

On the one hand, there was no ring in his hand; on the other hand, it was easy enough for Fu Qian to tell the skeleton was also male.

A male corpse buried deep underground many years ago, one that had lingered in Cardon’s mind so long that, on his deathbed, he had to rush over to dig it up and bow on his knees.

The tangled grievances here really sent the imagination racing.

In fact, to Fu Qian, it wasn’t completely without clues—

First, the dead man’s clothes: at this distance he could even make out some of the details.

On a dark red background, faint, delicate embroidery could be seen.

The overall shape was a bit abstract, like two symmetrical arcs—bite marks.

Yes, as someone who had repeatedly contemplated certain abstract paintings, Fu Qian very quickly had an epiphany.

Those were tooth marks embroidered on the clothes with black silk thread, scattered over every part.

Combined with the bones inside, for a moment it almost created the illusion that the victim had literally been gnawed into this state.

In short, this kind of outfit would still be a little too avant-garde to wear out in public around here.

Together with Cardon’s mention of prayers in the warehouse just now, it was easy enough to boldly guess that the dead man had been one of those weird characters.

Second, the man was very likely killed by Cardon back then, and then buried here.

After all, to remember him so obsessively and come to the exact spot like this.

Lastly, Cardon can’t have been a Mortal back then, or he wouldn’t have been able to pull off a stunt like this.

Besides inhuman strength and composure, you’d also need to carry out this kind of major construction in a place you’re unfamiliar with and not draw any attention—just like now.

Not everyone around here is some drunk husband; with that much noise just now, under normal circumstances how could the people nearby not react.

The reason it was this quiet was simple: how could Mortals possibly stand up to a Middle Tier Transcendent.

It looked like Cardon’s abilities involved some kind of special psychic influence, forcing everyone into deep sleep.

Too bad he couldn’t bring the Burial Scroll in; otherwise he could have taken the initiative to do a bit of sampling.

But there was good reason to believe that back then Cardon had used a similar method, allowing him to openly bury a corpse this deep and keep it hidden for years.

Of course, looking at him now, he clearly no longer cared about that point—thud, thud!

While Fu Qian was still commenting silently, Mr. Cardon Sr. had already come back.

This time, though, he didn’t open the door and get in, just knocked on the window with a blank expression.

”What do you think?”

After Fu Qian rolled the window down, Cardon looked down at him from above and asked the same question he’d asked when they left the hotel.

...

”Not bad.”

The old man’s face was expressionless; there wasn’t even the melancholy of a long-cherished wish fulfilled.

Fu Qian nodded as he spoke, his gaze dropping to the other man’s now empty hands.

”What’s ’not bad’ about it?”

Cardon seemed oddly persistent, immediately following up.

”It feels like you dug up your own past—some kind of time capsule or something.”

Honest people are unbeatable. Fu Qian gave a detailed answer without a pause, even glancing toward the spot where the man had just been working.

There are many kinds of time capsules; this should fit under the broad definition, right?

And there was no need to worry that this move would trigger anything. For ordinary people, in this kind of Darkness it was almost impossible to see what was over there, and the limits of perception followed naturally.

As long as he was firmly believed to be just an ordinary person, even if he said outright that he saw human bones being dug up, the old man would only veer off into a conspiracy-theory direction, like he’d known all along and was some kind of Avenger from the original incident.

Unless he’d just tried to hypnotize Fu Qian as well.

Unfortunately, this specially invited driver seemed to hold some special significance for him.

From beginning to end Cardon seemed to want him to stay awake, as a witness.

Though he apparently didn’t want the witness to know too many details either; overall the whole thing felt rather twisted.

”Heh... time capsule, that’s a good phrase.

”And it’s not wrong either. When you get to my age, you’ll know anything can be a time capsule.”

This time, Cardon seemed genuinely amused by the witness’s commentary and even laughed aloud.

And, as expected, he didn’t bring up the bones himself.

”Thanks for sharing your life wisdom.”

Fu Qian played along generously, thanking him with a straight face.

”But friendly reminder, we really are low on gas.”

...

That one line yanked the old man back to reality. Fu Qian even pointed at the fuel gauge for him to look.

”You really are a very interesting person. I’m less and less regretful that I picked you back then.”

Cardon’s gaze naturally followed his finger; faced with a gauge that was basically unreadable, he clearly had no grounds for rebuttal.

And he didn’t seem planning to argue anyway. His eyes flicked back to Fu Qian’s face and he simply offered a heartfelt compliment on how unusual he was.

Click!

The next second he directly opened the door.

”Don’t worry, the items on the list are already completed.”

Oh?

”That’s it? All done?”

Such efficient progress made Fu Qian naturally look curious.

”Yeah. Unless you think it’s not enough? That would be a bit strange. Aren’t you anxious to get the rest of your pay?”

Cardon actually looked more curious than he did.

Not at all. I’m very easygoing; it’s someone else who thinks it’s not enough.

Fu Qian sighed inwardly at that moment.

If your list were really complete, I’d already have turned into white light and ascended.

And this trip could be nominated for easiest job of my career.

Unfortunately, what Cardon meant by ”complete” clearly didn’t match the criteria on the warehouse’s side.

”Seems you really are still unsatisfied...”

Even though Fu Qian didn’t say anything, the old man clearly picked up on some message.

His brows furrowed even tighter for a moment, and his gaze sharpened a little, as if he wanted to strip this driver down to his last thought.

”You’re right, things did go smoother than I expected this time, and your cooperation was crucial... How about this, interested in helping me finish some extra content?”

Before Fu Qian could speak, Cardon was already nodding to himself with interest, as if he’d made some decision.

”Sure.”

Fu Qian agreed cleanly, not even bringing up payment.

”That’s wonderful... get out of the car.”

Cardon looked quite pleased, seemingly unaware of how selfless that sounded, simply staring straight ahead as he gave the specific task.

”Next item: forcibly taking something without consent.”
