Kai didn’t touch it.

The cardboard package rested in his hands, impossibly light.

Too light.

Its flaps hung open, bent outward as though something inside had forced its way out.

Not torn.

Not ripped.

Simply... pushed open from within.

A chill crawled up Kai’s spine.

Daniel slowly reached toward the package, hesitation written across his face.

”Kai...”

”Don’t.”

The word came out sharper than Kai intended.

Daniel immediately stopped, pulling his hand back.

”...Bad feeling?”

Kai nodded without taking his eyes off the box.

”The worst one yet.”

Silence settled over the apartment.

Outside, a police siren wailed somewhere in the distance before fading beneath the hum of morning traffic.

A car horn blared.

Someone laughed on the sidewalk below.

Life continued as if nothing had happened.

As if reality itself hadn’t been cracking apart for the past several hours.

Kai carried the package into the kitchen and gently set it on the worn wooden table.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Nearly a full minute passed before Luna finally broke the silence.

”...Open it.”

Kai looked toward his monitor.

”I thought you’d tell me not to.”

”I was going to.”

She gave a weak, tired smile.

”...Then I remembered something.”

Kai frowned.

”What?”

She pressed two fingers against her temple.

”You never forgive yourself when you hesitate.”

Kai froze.

”...What?”

”I don’t know.”

She winced slightly.

”It just... came out.”

Another memory.

Another fragment clawing its way back to the surface before slipping away again.

Kai stared at her for a long moment before looking back at the package.

He slowly lifted one cardboard flap.

Nothing happened.

No whispers.

No darkness.

No impossible pressure pressing against his mind.

Just silence.

He opened the second flap.

The box was...

Empty.

Daniel blinked.

”Seriously?”

Kai leaned over and peered inside.

Plain brown cardboard.

No wrapping.

No note.

No object.

Nothing.

”...That’s impossible.”

He lifted the package and turned it upside down.

Nothing fell out.

Not even dust.

Luna frowned at the screen.

”There has to be something.”

Kai nodded.

”There does.”

”There has to.”

His eyes scanned every inch of the interior.

Corners.

Folds.

Creases.

Nothing.

Then...

He noticed it.

Not inside the box.

On the bottom.

Pressed deep into the cardboard fibers.

A handprint.

Small.

No bigger than a child’s hand.

It looked as though someone had pressed a burning palm against the cardboard years ago, scorching the shape permanently into the surface.

The edges were blackened.

The center had faded into a dark amber stain.

Kai crouched lower.

”...What is that?”

Daniel leaned closer.

”I don’t...”

His voice trailed off.

”I swear that wasn’t there a second ago.”

Kai slowly reached out.

His fingertips brushed the burned handprint.

The world vanished.

He stood inside a library.

No.

Not a library.

The Library.

Shelves stretched farther than sight itself, disappearing into an endless horizon of books.

They didn’t merely reach the ceiling.

They climbed beyond it.

Ladders drifted silently from shelf to shelf without anyone touching them.

Books opened and closed on their own.

Pages turned despite the complete absence of wind.

Somewhere overhead, paper rustled like distant rain.

There weren’t thousands of books.

There weren’t millions.

There were enough to make the idea of counting feel meaningless.

Kai slowly turned in place.

Every shelf.

Every row.

Every towering stack...

Held the same title.

Kai Mercer.

His blood ran cold.

”...What...”

A voice answered from somewhere behind him.

”Every possibility.”

Kai spun around.

An old man stood between two towering shelves.

His beard reached nearly to his waist.

Round spectacles rested low on his nose.

A faded brown coat, stained with countless splashes of ink, hung loosely from his shoulders.

In one hand, he carried an old feather pen.

In the other...

A closed book.

The old man smiled warmly.

”You’ve taken considerably longer than I expected.”

Kai stared at him.

”...Who are you?”

The old man bowed politely.

”I’ve had many names.”

”Librarian.”

”Archivist.”

”Keeper.”

”Witness.”

He straightened.

”But...”

A tired sadness entered his eyes.

”...you would know me as the Editor.”

Kai frowned.

”...Editor?”

The old man nodded.

”You’ve met the Author.”

”You’ve met Witnesses.”

”You’ve met memories pretending to be people.”

A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

”It was only a matter of time before you met someone responsible for cleaning up the mess.”

Kai blinked.

”...Readers?”

The Editor sighed heavily.

”I always do that.”

He rubbed his forehead.

”I keep forgetting.”

”You haven’t reached that Chapter yet.”

Kai let out an exasperated breath.

”My life would be a lot easier if someone answered one question without creating ten more.”

To his surprise...

The old man laughed.

Not politely.

Not awkwardly.

A genuine laugh.

”Elias said exactly the same thing.”

Kai couldn’t help smiling.

”...Seriously?”

”Word for word.”

The Editor turned and began walking.

”Come.”

Kai followed.

Books surrounded them endlessly.

Some looked centuries old, their leather bindings cracked with age.

Others appeared freshly printed.

Several burned quietly without turning to ash.

Entire shelves were frozen beneath thick layers of ice.

One section appeared underwater, its pages drifting gently despite being trapped inside solid glass.

The Library felt alive.

Not haunted.

Alive.

The Editor stopped before an enormous shelf marked with a single brass plaque.

Mercer Family

Kai’s breath caught.

Dozens of books rested there.

Not hundreds.

Not thousands.

Just...

Dozens.

Each bore a different name.

Arthur Mercer.

Emily Mercer.

Kai Mercer.

Elias Mercer.

His eyes widened.

There were two books bearing Elias’s name.

One was thick enough to require both hands.

The other...

Was heartbreakingly thin.

Kai pointed toward them.

”Why are there two?”

The Editor’s expression softened.

”Because...”

His voice became quiet.

”...he died twice.”

Silence.

Kai instinctively reached toward the thicker volume.

The Editor caught his wrist before he could touch it.

”No.”

Kai looked at him.

”Why?”

”Because...”

The old man’s voice was gentle.

”...that story isn’t yours.”

Kai frowned.

”Then why show it to me?”

”So you’ll understand.”

He released Kai’s wrist and continued farther down the shelf.

At the very end...

Rested one final book.

Unlike every other volume in the Library...

It had no title.

No name.

No symbol.

Nothing.

Its cover was completely black.

The instant Kai looked at it...

Pressure squeezed around his heart.

He didn’t need anyone to tell him what it was.

”The Author.”

The Editor slowly nodded.

”Almost.”

Kai looked at him.

”What does that mean?”

”The Author...”

The old man rested one wrinkled hand upon the black cover.

”...isn’t a person anymore.”

”It’s a manuscript.”

Kai stared.

”...A manuscript?”

The Editor smiled sadly.

”Stories are alive.”

”They grow.”

”They change.”

”They outlive the people who write them.”

His voice dropped almost to a whisper.

”And sometimes...”

He looked down at the black book.

”...they refuse to end.”

The cassette.

The loops.

The bargains.

The Witnesses.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

Kai swallowed.

”So...”

”...we’re inside a story.”

The Editor met his eyes.

”No.”

A long silence followed.

Then he spoke.

”You’re inside a story...”

His expression darkened.

”...that escaped.”

The words settled over the Library like falling snow.

Kai felt the ground shift beneath him.

”It began as fiction.”

”It became memory.”

”It became history.”

”And eventually...”

He gently tapped the cover of the manuscript.

”...it became hungry.”

The Library trembled.

Books tumbled from distant shelves.

Somewhere impossibly far away...

A bell rang.

Once.

The Editor’s face immediately changed.

His smile vanished.

”...No.”

Kai looked up.

”What?”

The old man stared toward the darkness beyond the shelves.

”He found you.”

Kai frowned.

”Who?”

The Editor didn’t answer.

Every book titled Kai Mercer flew from its shelf simultaneously.

Thousands.

Then tens of thousands.

Then countless more.

Their covers burst open in unison.

Pages ripped free, swirling through the Library in a roaring hurricane of paper.

The air filled with ink.

The smell of old parchment.

The sound of millions of stories turning at once.

The Editor shoved Kai backward.

”Run!”

”What?”

”NOW!”

The black manuscript opened by itself.

Every page inside was blank.

For one heartbeat.

Then black ink began spreading across the first page.

Words slowly formed.

The Editor has outlived his usefulness.

The old man’s face drained of all color.

His shoulders sagged.

”...Not again.”

Darkness spread across the Library.

Not from above.

Not from below.

From the pages themselves.

Every written word inside every open book melted into liquid black ink.

Countless rivers of letters flowed across the floor.

They merged together.

Rushing toward the manuscript.

Toward...

The Author.

The Editor looked back at Kai one final time.

His tired eyes carried the same quiet resolve Kai had seen in Elias.

The same acceptance.

The same determination.

”You’ve inherited enough sacrifices.”

A gentle smile crossed his face.

”...Don’t inherit mine.”

With both hands, he slammed the black manuscript shut.

The Library erupted into blinding white light.
