Yandere Stream

The wind never returned.

The field lay in absolute stillness, as though the world itself had forgotten how to breathe. Not a single blade of grass swayed. Even the gray clouds overhead remained frozen in place, painted across the sky like strokes on an unfinished canvas.

Silence pressed against Kai’s ears.

Not peaceful silence.

Waiting silence.

He looked at the little boy sitting beneath the lonely tree.

Then at the worn notebook resting in the child’s lap.

Then back again.

”...What do you mean?”

The boy’s lips curved into a faint smile.

”It took you longer than Elias.”

Kai let out a weary sigh.

”I’ve noticed everyone compares me to him.”

”They do.”

”And I’m starting to hate it.”

A quiet laugh escaped the boy.

It wasn’t mocking.

It was the laugh of someone remembering an old friend.

”Elias said the exact same thing.”

Kai dragged a hand down his face.

”Of course he did.”

For the briefest moment, the crushing weight surrounding them eased. It felt almost... normal.

The boy closed the notebook with gentle care.

”You asked what I meant.”

Kai nodded.

”Every memory you’ve recovered...”

The child leaned down and plucked a single blade of grass from the earth.

”...contains the same language.”

He rolled it slowly between his fingers.

”Chapter.”

”Loop.”

”Witness.”

”Author.”

”Story.”

His eyes lifted to meet Kai’s.

”Did you ever stop to ask yourself why?”

Kai opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

He closed it again.

No.

He never had.

Those words had become so common that he’d accepted them without question. Everyone around him used them, so eventually... he had too.

The boy continued.

”People compare stories to life.”

”They don’t compare life to stories.”

A pause.

”So...”

He tilted his head.

”...why does your world do the opposite?”

Kai felt his pulse quicken.

”I...”

He searched for an answer that wasn’t there.

”I don’t know.”

”I know.”

The reply came softly.

”But before I tell you...”

The boy looked toward the empty horizon.

”...I need to ask you something.”

Kai waited.

”When you met Luna...”

The boy’s voice became quieter.

”Did it feel like meeting her for the first time?”

Kai frowned.

”...No.”

The answer surprised him.

”It felt...”

He searched for the right word.

”...familiar.”

The boy nodded as though he’d expected nothing else.

”And Elias?”

Kai smiled despite himself.

”He felt like...”

His chest tightened.

”...like I’d been missing someone my entire life.”

”Mrs. Ashcroft?”

”Like my grandmother.”

”Daniel?”

Kai answered without hesitation.

”My oldest friend.”

The boy’s smile slowly widened.

”You’ve wondered why.”

”...Yeah.”

The child rested his hand atop the notebook.

”Because those feelings...”

He tapped the worn cover once.

”...weren’t written.”

”They survived.”

Kai frowned.

”What?”

”The creature steals memories.”

”It destroys records.”

”It changes photographs.”

”It rewrites history.”

He paused.

”But there is one thing...”

The boy looked directly into Kai’s eyes.

”...that no story can completely erase.”

Kai barely breathed.

”...Love.”

The child nodded.

”Connection.”

”You can forget someone’s face.”

”Their name.”

”Their laugh.”

”The sound of their footsteps.”

He placed a small hand against his chest.

”But the part of you that loved them...”

His voice softened.

”...doesn’t disappear.”

”It waits.”

Kai felt his throat tighten.

Images rushed through his mind.

Luna.

The way trusting her had always felt effortless.

Elias.

A brother he’d forgotten but somehow still mourned.

Mrs. Ashcroft.

Daniel.

None of them had been strangers.

Not really.

He hadn’t remembered them.

He had recognized them.

The realization struck him with such force that he nearly lost his balance.

”It wasn’t luck.”

The boy slowly shook his head.

”No.”

”It never was.”

A warm smile touched his face.

”You’ve already proven something the Author believed was impossible.”

Kai looked up.

”What?”

The boy looked toward the frozen sky.

”That a story...”

He paused.

”...cannot rewrite the human heart.”

Silence followed.

Not an empty silence.

A sacred one.

For the first time since Apartment 7C...

For the first time since he’d stepped into this nightmare...

Kai felt something stronger than fear.

Hope.

Real hope.

Then—

The sky cracked.

Not with thunder.

Not with lightning.

A crack.

Like porcelain splitting beneath invisible pressure.

A thin black line stretched across the heavens.

Then another.

Then another.

The little boy sighed.

”...We’re out of time.”

Kai immediately stood.

”Wait.”

The child looked at him.

”You still haven’t answered me.”

”About what?”

”The Author.”

The boy’s gaze drifted toward the breaking sky.

”I will.”

”...But not today.”

Kai frowned.

”What?”

”You still think the Author is someone else.”

The ground trembled beneath them.

The lone tree atop the hill began shedding leaves.

Except they weren’t leaves anymore.

Each one dissolved into glowing fragments of memory before drifting away into the gray sky.

The boy stood as well.

Only then did Kai truly notice how small he was.

Just a child.

A lonely child carrying the weight of forgotten centuries.

The sight hurt in a way Kai couldn’t explain.

”How old are you?”

The question escaped before he could stop it.

The boy smiled.

”I was ten.”

Kai frowned.

”...Was?”

The child looked toward the fractured sky.

”I’ve been ten...”

His smile became impossibly sad.

”...for a very long time.”

Kai’s chest ached.

He didn’t know why.

But somehow...

Those words hurt more than anything else he’d heard today.

The cracks widened.

Darkness seeped through them like ink spreading through water.

The boy reached out, offering the notebook.

”Take it.”

Kai accepted it carefully.

The notebook nearly slipped from his hands.

It was far heavier than it looked.

Almost impossibly so.

”What’s inside?”

”Names.”

”I know.”

The boy shook his head.

”No.”

”You’ve only seen the names.”

”There are stories between them.”

Kai blinked.

”What stories?”

”The lives that were forgotten.”

The child smiled gently.

”Read them.”

”Remember them.”

”That’s how witnesses fight.”

The hill shook violently.

A roar echoed beyond the broken sky.

Not loud.

Enormous.

The sound alone made reality tremble.

The little boy looked upward.

”...It’s here.”

Without thinking...

Kai stepped in front of him.

Shielding him.

The child blinked in surprise.

Then laughed.

A genuine laugh.

”Elias really did raise you.”

Before Kai could answer—

Something moved above them.

The crack spreading across the heavens suddenly widened.

An eye opened inside it.

Not beneath it.

Inside it.

Its iris alone dwarfed the entire field.

Its pupil was darker than space itself.

It wasn’t searching.

It wasn’t looking everywhere.

It was looking at one person.

Kai.

The instant their gazes met—

Every muscle in his body froze.

The notebook grew unbearably heavy in his hands.

The memories drifting through the air stopped moving.

Time itself seemed to hesitate.

Then...

A voice older than language echoed across the collapsing world.

”Witness.”

The word wasn’t heard.

It was understood.

It reverberated through Kai’s bones, through his thoughts, through every memory he had ever recovered.

His body locked in place.

The voice spoke again.

Not with hatred.

Not with anger.

With recognition.

”You remember.”

The little boy’s smile disappeared.

His expression hardened.

”It knows.”

The colossal eye narrowed.

The heavens split apart.

The voice thundered through the dying memory.

”The final Chapter begins.”

The world shattered into light.
