100 Chapter 100: The First Morning 2026-10-14

The apartment fell silent.

Not the sharp, suffocating silence that usually came before another impossible knock.

Not the uneasy quiet that followed anonymous messages or distorted voices.

This silence settled over the room like a heavy blanket, pressing against Kai’s shoulders until even breathing felt louder than it should.

He couldn’t stop staring at the laptop.

Because no one was waiting for Daniel to come home.

The sentence refused to leave his mind.

It wasn’t threatening.

It wasn’t mocking.

If anything...

It sounded almost... sad.

Kai swallowed and looked toward the front door.

Daniel was still outside.

After everything that had happened tonight, the man hadn’t left.

He’d stayed in the hallway for hours, standing guard outside the apartment of a streamer he’d barely spoken to before tonight.

Not because anyone ordered him to.

Because he wanted to.

”Derek.”

”...Yeah?”

”Is Daniel married?”

Silence crackled over the call.

”...I honestly don’t know.”

”Kids?”

”I’ve never heard him mention any.”

”What about parents? Brothers? Sisters?”

Another pause.

”I... don’t know that either.”

Kai frowned.

It suddenly felt strange.

They all knew Daniel.

Or at least they thought they did.

He was the building manager.

The guy who fixed broken pipes.

Who reset the fire alarms whenever someone burned toast.

Who apologized every time the elevator got stuck between floors.

He remembered tenants’ birthdays.

He carried groceries for elderly residents.

He somehow always knew which apartments needed maintenance before anyone called.

Everyone knew Daniel.

Nobody knew anything about Daniel.

The laptop flickered.

The previous sentence dissolved.

Slowly, new words appeared.

Loneliness leaves empty rooms.

Kai’s jaw tightened.

He hated that sentence.

Not because it frightened him.

Because it felt true.

His gaze drifted around his apartment.

The empty couch.

The untouched dining table.

The second chair he’d bought years ago because guests were ”bound to visit eventually.”

Nobody ever had.

His streaming setup filled one corner of the room.

The rest...

Looked more like somewhere people passed through than somewhere someone actually lived.

How many nights had he unlocked this door to absolute silence?

How many evenings had the first voice he heard belonged to chat?

To strangers named GoblinTaxCollector, Milk_Destroyer, and PeePeeWizard69 arguing over nonsense while he laughed into a webcam.

He’d always told himself he liked living alone.

Now...

He wasn’t so sure.

Tonight, someone had waited for him.

Luna.

She’d stayed through every impossible message.

Every knock.

Every panic attack.

She remembered when he’d forgotten to eat.

She noticed when his voice changed.

She knew he’d been rubbing the back of his neck whenever he lied.

She stayed.

The realization settled heavily in his chest.

Dangerously heavily.

”Kai.”

Luna’s voice pulled him back.

”...Yeah?”

”You’ve gone quiet.”

”I was thinking.”

”I can tell.”

He smiled faintly.

”That obvious?”

”You breathe differently.”

”...Seriously?”

”Mhm.”

”You exhale slower.”

She hesitated.

”And you stop fidgeting.”

Kai looked down.

His hands were perfectly still.

”...That’s creepy.”

”It is a little.”

Despite everything, they both laughed.

The sound didn’t last long, but it was enough.

Enough to remind him they were still people talking through a headset.

Not just survivors trapped inside a nightmare.

”What were you thinking about?” Luna asked.

Kai leaned against the counter.

”...Home.”

She didn’t respond immediately.

Instead she asked, very quietly,

”When was the last time someone waited for you?”

The question landed harder than any horror he’d faced tonight.

He opened his mouth.

Closed it again.

His parents?

They texted on holidays.

Sometimes birthdays.

Friends?

Most had disappeared when streaming stopped being a hobby and became his entire life.

Relationships...

He laughed under his breath.

”They usually ended because I streamed too much.”

Luna didn’t interrupt.

Didn’t offer sympathy.

She simply listened.

”I guess...”

He rubbed the back of his neck.

”...I don’t really have an answer.”

Outside, someone knocked gently.

Three polite taps.

Daniel.

”Mr. Mercer?”

Kai looked toward the door.

”...Yeah?”

”We brought coffee.”

Kai blinked.

”What?”

”The officers ran downstairs to the diner.”

Daniel sounded almost embarrassed.

”You’ve been awake all night.”

”We figured you’d probably need it.”

Kai stared at the door.

Coffee.

After haunted streams.

Impossible cameras.

Reflectionless officers.

Rules carved into walls.

Someone had remembered coffee.

”...Thanks.”

”You can just leave it outside.”

”No need for me to open up.”

”Already did.”

A paper cup slid beneath the gap until it rested against the inside edge of the doorway.

Then footsteps retreated.

Nobody lingered.

Nobody pressured him.

Nobody tried convincing him to unlock the door.

The rich smell of fresh coffee drifted through the apartment.

Kai closed his eyes.

”...They’re good people.”

”They are.”

Luna sounded genuinely relieved.

”I like Daniel.”

Kai smiled.

”You’ve never even met him.”

”I’ve heard enough.”

For several minutes...

Nobody said anything.

Kai simply sipped the coffee.

It was still hot.

Probably bought less than five minutes ago.

Too much sugar.

Cheap creamer.

Exactly the kind of coffee every diner served at six in the morning.

It tasted...

Wonderful.

His body practically sighed with relief after the first sip.

”I forgot coffee could taste this good.”

”I think that’s just sleep deprivation.”

”Probably.”

The laptop chimed.

Both of them looked over at once.

The screen changed.

The folders vanished.

The list of recordings disappeared.

Now a single photograph filled the display.

An apartment lobby.

Older.

Much older.

The wallpaper was faded yellow.

The mailboxes were painted green instead of gray.

Even the floor tiles were different.

A timestamp rested quietly in the corner.

October 14, 2011

Kai frowned.

”...My building.”

”Before the renovations,” Derek muttered.

The image showed a community gathering.

Plastic folding tables.

Paper plates.

Children chasing each other through the courtyard.

Someone stood beside a cheap barbecue grill wearing an apron that read Kiss the Cook.

Ordinary.

Happy.

The kind of picture people forgot existed until years later.

Kai’s eyes wandered across the crowd.

Then stopped.

”...Wait.”

One man near the center looked familiar.

Dark hair.

Late twenties.

Laughing at something just outside the frame.

”I’ve seen him.”

”No,” Derek said immediately.

”I have.”

”You haven’t.”

Kai leaned closer.

”The first recording.”

Silence.

Derek opened the image himself.

Several seconds passed.

Then...

”...You’re right.”

It was him.

The young man from Night One.

The one who’d laughed awkwardly into his webcam.

The one who thought someone was stalking him.

Eleven years younger.

Alive.

Smiling.

Standing beside a woman holding a little girl on her hip.

The woman looked happy.

The man looked relaxed.

The child couldn’t have been older than four.

Kai frowned.

Something about the little girl tugged at his memory.

The laptop slowly zoomed in.

Not toward the man.

Not toward the woman.

Toward the child.

She wore oversized pink headphones around her neck.

Children’s hearing protectors.

Bright enough to stand out even in the faded photograph.

Around her neck rested a tiny silver pendant.

A crescent moon.

Kai’s heartbeat slowed.

”...Luna.”

The name escaped before he realized he’d spoken.

The Discord call went completely silent.

Not disconnected.

Silent.

Her icon remained green.

She was still there.

She simply wasn’t speaking.

”Luna?”

Nothing.

Kai looked back at the photograph.

The smiling little girl stared toward the camera.

Someone had handwritten a caption beneath the printed image.

Building Community Day

Residents of 7A, 7B, and 7C

The camera zoomed one last time.

Onto the moon pendant.

Small.

Silver.

Worn smooth around the edges from years of use.

Exactly like the necklace Luna had casually mentioned once, hours ago, while talking about things she’d kept from childhood.

Kai never would have remembered it under normal circumstances.

Tonight...

He remembered everything.

Nearly a minute passed.

Finally—

Luna spoke.

Her voice was barely audible.

”...I know that picture.”

Kai slowly turned toward his headset.

”...How?”

She took a shaky breath.

One he could hear her struggling to steady.

”...Because...”

Another pause.

Long enough for Kai to hear the distant chatter of the officers outside.

Long enough for the coffee in his hand to grow cold.

”...I think that’s me.”

Nobody said a word.

Not Derek.

Not Daniel.

Not Kai.

The laptop wasn’t finished.

The photograph zoomed out again, revealing the entire group.

One by one...

Faces began fading.

Not disappearing.

Blurring.

As though the photograph itself could no longer remember them.

Children vanished first.

Then adults.

Families dissolved into empty spaces.

Until only three people remained perfectly clear.

The man from Night One.

The little girl.

And...

Someone standing several feet behind them.

Half-hidden beneath the shade of the apartment stairwell.

A young man in a dark hoodie.

Watching the camera instead of the celebration.

Watching the little girl.

Watching everyone.

Unlike the rest of the photograph...

He wasn’t smiling.

At the bottom of the screen, new text slowly appeared.

He attended every community day.

No one remembers inviting him.
