Yandere Stream

Kai stared at the old laptop.

It sat exactly where he’d abandoned it months ago, half-buried beneath unopened mail, a faded utility bill, and a layer of dust thick enough to leave fingerprints. The charging cable wasn’t plugged in. He knew that with absolute certainty. He’d stolen it weeks earlier to charge his wireless headset after the original cable had frayed.

The battery should have been dead.

The motherboard should have been cold.

The screen should have been black.

Instead, it glowed with a pale white light that washed over the nearby wall.

Rule One learned.

Forty-six remain.

Nobody spoke.

Not Derek.

Not Daniel.

Not even Luna.

For several long seconds, the apartment held its breath.

Kai finally moved.

Not quickly.

Every step was slow and deliberate, as though approaching a wild animal that hadn’t decided whether it wanted to run or bite. His instincts screamed at him to stay away, but something had changed during the night. The panic that had driven him from room to room had burned itself out hours ago.

What remained wasn’t courage.

It was caution.

He stopped an arm’s length from the bookshelf.

The green webcam light remained on.

The white text didn’t flicker.

Didn’t animate.

Didn’t react.

It simply existed.

”Kai.”

Luna finally broke the silence.

”Don’t touch it.”

”I wasn’t planning to.”

He leaned slightly to one side, trying to catch the display from a different angle.

Nothing happened.

The laptop didn’t respond.

It didn’t acknowledge him.

It simply waited with the unnerving patience of something that knew time wasn’t a problem.

His phone buzzed inside his pocket.

He ignored it.

A few seconds later, Derek cleared his throat.

”I searched the phrase.”

Kai looked toward the counter where he’d left the rest of his devices.

”’Rule One learned?’”

”Yeah.”

”Anything?”

”No.”

Derek sounded unsettled.

”Nothing on Google.”

”Nothing in cached pages.”

”I checked archived forums.”

”Even Reddit.”

”There isn’t a single result.”

Kai frowned.

”So it’s unique.”

”Or...”

Derek paused.

”...it was never meant to exist anywhere people could search.”

Kai’s gaze drifted back to the glowing screen.

Forty-six remain.

That meant forty-seven rules.

It was an oddly specific number.

Not fifty.

Not one hundred.

Forty-seven.

His mind wandered backward through the entire night.

The anonymous texts.

The knocking.

The impossible stream.

The smiling man.

The reflectionless officer.

The hidden wall.

One memory after another slid into place like pieces of a puzzle he hadn’t realized he was assembling.

”...Rule One.”

He spoke quietly, almost to himself.

”I think I understand.”

Luna remained silent.

She wasn’t interrupting.

She was waiting.

”It never forced me.”

Kai looked around the apartment as he spoke, remembering each encounter.

”The texts wanted me to answer.”

”The stream wanted me to watch.”

”The hallway wanted me to look.”

”The wall wanted me to open it.”

”The door wanted me to unlock it.”

”They all...”

He frowned.

”They all asked.”

His heartbeat slowed as the realization settled.

”And the only time it stopped...”

He glanced toward the pocket where his phone had buzzed over and over until he’d refused to look.

”...was when I ignored it completely.”

Luna answered softly.

”I think you’re right.”

Kai nodded.

”So Rule One isn’t...”

He searched for the right wording.

”...don’t answer.”

”It’s...”

He looked directly at the glowing display.

”...don’t willingly give it what it wants.”

The laptop screen flickered.

Every light in the apartment dimmed for half a second.

The words disappeared.

The display turned completely black.

Kai instinctively took a step backward.

Then new text slowly appeared.

Correct.

His pulse lurched.

The laptop wasn’t displaying prerecorded messages.

It was responding.

Listening.

Thinking.

”Nope.”

Kai raised both hands as if surrendering.

”I am officially done talking to haunted electronics.”

The screen changed again.

A loading circle spun lazily.

Folders opened one after another without anyone touching the keyboard.

Finally, a directory appeared.

Hundreds of video files filled the screen.

Every filename followed the same pattern.

Night_001.mp4

Night_002.mp4

Night_003.mp4

The list continued.

Rows.

Pages.

Far more than Kai could see at once.

”They’re recordings.”

Derek answered immediately.

”Don’t play them.”

”I wasn’t planning to.”

The mouse cursor moved.

By itself.

Smoothly.

Deliberately.

It hovered over the first file.

Clicked.

The video opened.

A grainy webcam recording filled the screen.

A young man sat in front of a cheap computer desk.

Early twenties.

Messy black hair.

Dark circles beneath his eyes.

Kai didn’t recognize him.

The timestamp in the corner simply read:

Night One

The young man laughed awkwardly.

”So...”

”I think somebody’s stalking me.”

He smiled in that embarrassed way people did when they weren’t sure if they were overreacting.

”I know how ridiculous that sounds.”

”I probably sound completely insane.”

He rubbed the back of his neck.

”But somebody keeps sending me pictures of my apartment.”

Kai’s stomach tightened.

The man continued talking.

”I posted about it online.”

”Everyone thinks it’s fake.”

Another uneasy laugh.

”I really hope they’re right.”

The recording ended.

Abruptly.

No scream.

No jumpscare.

No explanation.

Just black.

The folder returned.

Before anyone could react, the second file opened.

A woman appeared.

Late twenties.

Different apartment.

Different country, judging by the electrical outlets and unfamiliar appliances behind her.

She looked exhausted.

”I found writing behind my wallpaper.”

She held up her phone with trembling hands.

”I swear it wasn’t there yesterday.”

Black screen.

Third recording.

An older man.

Gray beard.

Office cubicle.

Empty building behind him.

”I keep hearing knocking inside the walls.”

Cut.

Fourth recording.

A teenage girl sitting inside what looked like a college dorm.

”My stream won’t end.”

Black.

Fifth.

A middle-aged woman inside a hospital break room.

”I keep seeing someone standing behind security cameras.”

Black.

Sixth.

A teenager filming from inside his car.

”My GPS keeps taking me somewhere I never entered.”

Black.

Seventh.

An elderly woman.

”I hear children laughing inside my attic.”

Black.

Kai’s breathing slowed.

Every recording began the same way.

Different faces.

Different countries.

Different lives.

Different years.

The same impossible pattern.

The apartment suddenly felt much smaller.

”Luna.”

”...Yeah?”

”How many?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Kai could hear faint keyboard clicks through her microphone.

She was counting.

Scrolling.

The silence stretched.

Finally...

”...Four hundred and twelve.”

Kai blinked.

”What?”

”I counted every file.”

Her voice sounded unsteady.

”There are four hundred and twelve videos.”

Nobody spoke.

Four hundred and twelve people.

Or maybe...

Four hundred and twelve attempts.

Kai looked at the endless list.

Each filename represented someone who had reached a first night.

How many reached a second?

A tenth?

How many survived?

His eyes drifted farther down.

Near the bottom sat one file unlike all the others.

No number.

No sequence.

Just a single name.

CURRENT.mp4

Kai never clicked it.

He didn’t need to.

The cursor moved by itself.

Double-click.

The file opened.

Instead of another recording...

The laptop webcam light grew brighter.

The display filled with a live video feed.

Kai froze.

It was his apartment.

His desk.

His kitchen.

His couch.

Everything exactly as it looked now.

Except...

The camera wasn’t sitting on his desk.

It wasn’t attached to his monitor.

It wasn’t coming from his phone.

The angle was wrong.

It looked down from the upper corner of the room.

Near the ceiling.

High enough to see almost the entire apartment.

Kai slowly looked upward.

Nothing.

Only cracked plaster and an old smoke detector.

He looked back at the screen.

The live feed remained.

Then...

The camera moved.

Not electronically.

Physically.

The image swayed.

Dipped.

Shifted.

As though someone—or something—was crawling across the ceiling while carrying it.

Kai felt every muscle in his body tighten.

The viewpoint crept slowly along the ceiling toward the kitchen.

Toward him.

Toward the bookshelf.

No footsteps echoed.

No scraping reached his ears.

The movement existed only on the screen.

Until...

A faint creak sounded overhead.

Barely audible.

The camera stopped moving.

For one long second, nothing happened.

Then the viewpoint tilted downward.

Directly at Kai.

The feed zoomed in.

Closer.

Closer.

Until his own face filled the screen.

Behind him...

Something shifted.

Not in the apartment.

In the live feed.

A tall silhouette unfolded itself from the darkness behind the couch, where there had been nothing only moments before.

It wasn’t standing.

It was... straightening.

As though it had been folded into a space too small to contain it.

Kai whipped around.

The couch sat exactly where it always had.

Empty.

He spun back toward the laptop.

The figure was still there.

Standing less than six feet behind the version of Kai on the screen.

Its face remained hidden.

Its head tilted slightly.

Watching.

Waiting.

A new line of white text faded into the bottom of the live feed.

It can only be seen from the wrong angle.

Before Kai could process the words, the figure slowly raised one long arm.

Not toward the camera.

Toward him.

And on the laptop screen alone...

Its hand settled gently onto Kai’s shoulder.
