100 Chapter 100: The First Morning 2026-10-14

The elevator doors remained open.

Nobody stepped out.

Nobody breathed.

Kai stared into the living room.

The smell reached him first.

Fresh cinnamon.

Pine needles.

Hot chocolate.

The faint scent of wood burning in the fireplace.

It wasn’t a memory.

It was real.

Too real.

Snow drifted lazily beyond the windows while Christmas lights reflected across the polished floor.

Everything looked...

Alive.

His mother laughed somewhere in the kitchen.

A radio quietly played old holiday music.

Paper crinkled as a teenage Elias sat cross-legged beneath the tree, wrapping the last present with complete concentration.

Then...

He looked up.

Straight at the elevator.

Straight at Kai.

He smiled.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Simply relieved.

”...You’re late.”

Kai’s heart stopped.

Mrs. Ashcroft rested a hand on his arm.

”Go.”

He couldn’t move.

”What if...”

His voice barely worked.

”...what if this isn’t real?”

Mrs. Ashcroft smiled sadly.

”It isn’t.”

Kai looked at her.

”But...”

She glanced into the living room.

”...the feelings are.”

Daniel frowned.

”So what is this?”

Mrs. Ashcroft took a slow breath.

”The Eighth Floor doesn’t show lies.”

”It shows moments.”

”The ones that changed everything.”

Kai swallowed.

”So this already happened?”

”Yes.”

”Can I change it?”

She was quiet for several seconds.

Finally...

”I don’t know.”

That answer frightened him more than certainty ever could.

Kai stepped out of the elevator.

The moment both feet touched the hardwood floor...

Warmth wrapped around him.

Not supernatural warmth.

Just the ordinary comfort of a family home in winter.

For one terrifying heartbeat...

He forgot.

The creature.

The loops.

Apartment 7C.

The black door.

He simply felt...

Safe.

”Kai!”

His mother’s voice floated from the kitchen.

”Stop hiding from your brother and help me with breakfast!”

His vision blurred instantly.

He hadn’t heard her voice like this in years.

Not borrowed.

Not stolen.

Not perfectly imitated by something wearing her memory.

Just...

Mom.

Elias laughed without looking up.

”See?”

He smoothed another piece of wrapping paper.

”I told you she’d blame me.”

Kai stared at him.

Elias looked seventeen.

Maybe eighteen.

Messy black hair.

A faded gray hoodie stained with white paint across one sleeve.

Dark circles beneath tired eyes that somehow still managed to smile.

He looked...

Ordinary.

Not like the impossible guardian who had survived hundreds of loops.

Not like the ghost hidden inside forgotten photographs.

Just...

An older brother.

Elias tilted his head.

”You planning to stand there all morning?”

Kai let out a broken laugh.

”...I...”

His voice caught.

”I don’t know what to say.”

Elias’s smile softened.

”You don’t have to.”

He walked over.

Kai instinctively opened his arms.

Instead...

Flick.

Elias smacked his forehead with two fingers.

”Ow!”

”There.”

Elias grinned.

”Now you look less dramatic.”

Kai rubbed his forehead.

”You always do that?”

”Only when you’re being weird.”

”You’ve been doing it since I was six?”

”Since you were four.”

Kai blinked.

”I was weird at four?”

”You licked batteries.”

”...What?”

”You wanted to know if electricity had a flavor.”

Daniel burst out laughing.

Kai looked horrified.

”I did not.”

”You absolutely did.”

”I refuse to believe that.”

”You cried because they tasted disappointing.”

Kai covered his face.

”...Please stop talking.”

Elias laughed.

The sound filled the room.

Warm.

Easy.

Completely ordinary.

For a fleeting second...

Kai understood exactly why forgetting him had left such an impossible hole behind.

Daniel quietly stepped out of the elevator.

He looked around the living room in awe.

”They can’t see me.”

Mrs. Ashcroft nodded as she followed.

”They’re not supposed to.”

Kai frowned.

”What?”

He looked back at Elias.

His brother wasn’t looking at Daniel.

Or Mrs. Ashcroft.

He was only looking at Kai.

Almost...

As though no one else existed.

”Kai.”

Elias’s voice lowered.

”I’ve been waiting.”

Kai’s stomach tightened.

”You...”

He glanced toward the kitchen.

”My mom...”

Elias followed his gaze.

”She can’t hear this part.”

The radio suddenly grew louder.

His mother’s laughter faded beneath the music.

The living room dimmed slightly while the kitchen remained bright and warm.

Kai realized the memory itself...

Was giving them privacy.

Elias leaned against the wall.

”You finally made it.”

Kai frowned.

”What do you mean?”

Elias chuckled.

”I’ve said that to you so many times...”

His smile slowly faded.

”...I honestly forgot which loop this is.”

Kai’s chest tightened.

”So...”

”You remember.”

”Everything.”

Elias nodded.

”I do now.”

”But not here.”

Kai blinked.

”What?”

Elias tapped his own chest.

”This isn’t me.”

”This is the version of me that left this conversation behind.”

Kai looked around.

”So...”

”I’m talking to a recording?”

”Sort of.”

Elias smiled.

”A very expensive recording.”

Kai laughed despite himself.

”That was terrible.”

”I had nine hundred and forty-three loops to work on my comedy.”

”It got worse.”

”I know.”

Silence settled between them.

It wasn’t awkward.

It was the kind only brothers could share.

Comfortable.

Heavy.

Filled with everything they didn’t know how to say.

Finally...

Kai asked the question that had haunted him.

”Why didn’t you tell me?”

Elias looked down at the wrapped presents.

”Because every time you remembered me...”

He met Kai’s eyes again.

”...you chose me.”

Kai frowned.

”What?”

”You always tried to save me.”

His voice remained calm.

”And every time you did...”

”You lost Luna.”

The words struck harder than anything the creature had ever said.

”You thought forgetting you would stop that?”

”No.”

Elias smiled sadly.

”I thought loving her would.”

Kai opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Elias stepped closer.

”Listen carefully.”

”For once in your life...”

He smirked.

”...don’t interrupt.”

Kai rolled his eyes automatically.

”Fine.”

”I mean it.”

”I said fine.”

”You also said that before drinking glue.”

”I was five!”

”You were eight.”

”I hate you.”

”No.”

Elias smiled.

”You missed me.”

Kai laughed.

Then, without warning...

He started crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Tears simply spilled down his face.

Elias watched quietly.

”You know...”

Kai wiped at his eyes.

”I kept thinking...”

He laughed bitterly.

”...that if I remembered everything, it would stop hurting.”

Elias nodded.

”And?”

”It hurts more.”

”Good.”

Kai frowned.

”Good?”

”It means you’re remembering the right things.”

Silence.

Then Elias’s expression changed.

The warmth disappeared.

Something ancient settled behind his eyes.

”The creature isn’t trying to kill us.”

Kai blinked.

”What?”

”It’s trying to finish something.”

Silence filled the room.

”You’ve been asking the wrong question.”

”It was never...”

”What is it?”

Elias’s gaze became unreadable.

”The real question is...”

He looked directly into Kai’s eyes.

”...who made it?”

Before Kai could answer—

The Christmas lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every bulb on the tree shattered at the same instant.

The radio dissolved into violent static.

His mother’s laughter stopped in the middle of a word.

Outside...

The falling snow froze in midair.

Every flake hung motionless.

Elias turned toward the window.

His face hardened instantly.

”...It found us.”

A crack spread across the ceiling.

Another split the wall behind the Christmas tree.

The memory itself was breaking apart.

Wallpaper peeled away into darkness.

Family photographs melted into ash.

The fireplace burned black instead of orange.

Elias grabbed Kai by both shoulders.

His voice became urgent.

”Remember this.”

”You are not the first Kai Mercer.”

Kai’s eyes widened.

”What?”

The floor beneath the Christmas tree split apart.

Darkness poured upward like ink spilling through water.

”There were others before you.”

The room shook violently.

”The loops didn’t begin with us.”

Glass exploded inward from every window.

The darkness surged through the house.

His mother’s voice echoed from the kitchen.

”Kai?”

It wasn’t her anymore.

”Kai...”

The word stretched unnaturally.

Hungrily.

Elias ignored it.

He tightened his grip.

”Find the First Witness.”

”The first...”

Kai struggled to hear him over the roar.

”...who remembered.”

The ceiling collapsed.

The tree dissolved into splinters of light.

The walls folded inward.

Reality tore apart around them.

Elias smiled.

The same tired, reassuring smile that had survived every photograph.

Every loop.

Every sacrifice.

Then he spoke six final words.

”This time...”

He gently pushed Kai backward toward the elevator.

”...don’t save me first.”

The living room shattered.

Christmas.

The house.

His parents.

The snow.

Everything exploded into countless fragments of golden light.

Kai felt himself falling.

Not downward.

Backward.

As the memory collapsed into darkness...

One final sound followed him.

Not Elias’s voice.

Not the creature’s.

A child’s laughter.

His own.

Echoing from somewhere impossibly far away.
