100 Chapter 100: The First Morning 2026-10-14

Nobody spoke.

The words seemed to drain every remaining sound from the apartment.

”I think that’s me.”

Kai stared at the laptop screen.

Then at the Discord window beside it.

Luna’s icon still glowed green, but she wasn’t saying anything.

Not a joke.

Not a warning.

Not even a small comment to break the silence.

Outside the apartment, Daniel knocked once.

A normal knock.

A human knock.

”Mr. Mercer?”

His voice sounded tired.

”Everything alright?”

Kai swallowed.

”...Yeah.”

The lie came automatically.

Daniel didn’t question it.

He didn’t push.

”Okay.”

A pause.

”We’ll stay here.”

The footsteps moved away from the door.

Only a few feet.

Then stopped.

They weren’t leaving.

Kai looked back at the photograph on the laptop.

The little girl smiled brightly at the camera.

The silver moon pendant rested against her chest.

Pink headphones hung around her neck.

She looked...

Normal.

That was the part that bothered him.

Not scared.

Not haunted.

Not like someone who had been connected to whatever nightmare had followed him all night.

Just happy.

Children weren’t supposed to look that normal in horror stories.

That was what made it worse.

”Luna.”

Kai lowered his voice.

”You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.”

For several seconds, there was nothing.

Then Luna finally spoke.

Her voice sounded distant.

”I remember the necklace.”

Kai waited.

”I don’t remember the picture.”

Another pause.

”But...”

She took a slow breath.

”I remember wearing those headphones.”

Kai looked at the little girl again.

”Why?”

”Because loud noises scared me.”

Something about the way she said it made his chest tighten.

Not because it was frightening.

Because it sounded like a real memory.

A childhood memory.

Kai stared at the screen.

The girl couldn’t have been more than four or five years old.

”So...”

He hesitated.

”You lived here?”

”I...”

Luna stopped.

”I don’t know.”

Her voice carried frustration.

”It’s like trying to remember a dream after waking up.”

”I know pieces.”

”I know feelings.”

”But every time I try to remember everything...”

She went quiet.

”My head hurts.”

Kai didn’t push.

For once, he understood that some answers weren’t worth forcing.

Some doors were better left unopened.

The laptop suddenly chimed.

A soft notification sound.

Both Kai and Derek went silent.

The old photograph shifted across the screen.

Slowly.

Almost carefully.

Another image replaced it.

Same courtyard.

Same day.

Same barbecue.

Just a different angle.

Kai studied the picture.

Families laughing.

Children running around with balloons.

Neighbors talking.

A maintenance worker standing beside the grill.

A normal day.

A memory that belonged to someone else.

Then his eyes stopped.

Daniel.

Younger.

Much younger.

His hair was shorter.

His face looked almost unfamiliar.

Not because it had changed completely.

Because the exhaustion wasn’t there yet.

He stood near the grill, talking with the same man from the videos.

The man who had claimed someone was stalking him.

They looked close.

Like friends.

Then Kai noticed something strange.

Daniel was laughing.

Actually laughing.

Not the polite smile he gave tenants.

Not the tired expression he wore while fixing problems.

Real laughter.

Kai had never seen that side of him.

Derek spoke quietly.

”...I’ve never seen that picture before.”

”Me neither.”

Kai zoomed in.

The quality degraded immediately.

The image became blurry, but something remained obvious.

Daniel wasn’t looking at the man beside him.

He was looking behind him.

His smile had disappeared.

His expression had changed.

Confusion.

Concern.

Fear.

Kai followed his gaze.

Toward the apartment building.

Toward the seventh floor.

Every window reflected the afternoon sunlight.

Except one.

Apartment 7C.

The window was completely dark.

Not shadowed.

Not dim.

Dark.

Like someone had covered it from the inside.

Kai leaned closer.

”There.”

”I see it,” Derek replied.

The laptop zoomed in on its own.

The image stretched.

Pixels broke apart.

The old photograph struggled to keep its shape.

But one thing remained clear.

Someone was standing inside the dark apartment.

Watching the barbecue.

Watching everyone below.

The figure was impossible to identify.

No face.

No details.

Just a silhouette behind the glass.

Perfectly still.

Kai felt a chill crawl up his arms.

”Was...”

He swallowed.

”...was someone living in 7C?”

Luna answered almost immediately.

”I don’t think anyone was supposed to.”

Kai frowned.

”Supposed to?”

”I don’t know why I said that.”

She sounded just as confused as him.

”It just...”

A pause.

”It felt right.”

Before Kai could respond, the photograph distorted.

Horizontal lines tore across the screen.

The silhouette vanished.

Then returned.

Closer.

Kai stopped breathing.

The picture hadn’t changed.

The figure had.

It was now standing directly against the glass.

”That’s impossible.”

His voice came out quieter than he expected.

The date stamp still read:

October 14, 2011.

A photograph shouldn’t change.

The silhouette slowly lifted one arm.

Not toward the camera.

Not toward the people outside.

Toward the little girl wearing the moon pendant.

Toward Luna.

The laptop speakers crackled.

Static filled the room.

Then...

Very faintly...

A child’s voice.

”Daddy?”

Kai froze.

The voice belonged to someone young.

Too young.

Scared.

Confused.

Another burst of static.

Then a man’s voice answered.

”I’m right here.”

Silence.

The child spoke again.

”But...”

A pause.

A tiny breath.

”...who’s in our window?”

Every hair on Kai’s body stood up.

The recording ended.

The photograph disappeared.

The desktop returned.

No explanation.

No warning.

No new message.

Nothing.

Only the quiet hum of the laptop fan.

Nobody spoke.

For nearly a minute, the apartment remained frozen.

Finally, Luna whispered,

”...That wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Kai slowly turned toward his headset.

”What wasn’t?”

”I remembered something.”

His expression tightened.

”What?”

Luna’s breathing became uneven.

”I remembered...”

Another long silence followed.

”When I was little...”

Her voice dropped.

”I used to tell my dad there was someone living in the empty apartment upstairs.”

Kai frowned.

”But you lived on the seventh floor.”

”I know.”

”That’s why...”

Her voice trembled.

The first real crack in her composure all night.

”...he always told me there wasn’t an apartment above ours.”

Kai looked upward.

Slowly.

His apartment was on the seventh floor.

There was no eighth floor.

There never had been.

Then something creaked above his ceiling.

Not inside the walls.

Not in the attic.

Not on the roof.

Above all of that.

Like footsteps crossing a floor...

A floor that shouldn’t exist.
