Chapter 1423: Chapter 1423: The Boss’s Summoning

Ignorance is bliss, and that saying couldn’t be more accurate. The head of the Li family, though not particularly impressive, at least knew his place.

From the start, he had positioned himself appropriately.

But this young man in front of Ye Fei—what on earth did he think he was basing his arrogance on? His cultivation as a great adept?

Not only was his cultivation insubstantial, likely not even a seasoned peak innate cultivator could be defeated by him.

Even if he were a genuine great adept, what right did he have to act superior in front of Ye Fei?

It should be mentioned that this young man’s name is Ning Tao, a direct descendant of the Ning family in the capital.

Fortuitously, he was taken under the wing of a master when he was young, becoming the master’s last disciple and training in the mountains until a few months ago.

When his master’s lifespan was nearing its end, he used the method of bestowing his entire cultivation to Ning Tao, forcibly elevating him from a beginner in innate cultivation to a great adept.

After returning home, Ning Tao’s grandfather, through connections, managed to get him into a special department.

This department was responsible for protecting the highest-level dignitaries.

Each member had to undergo years of rigorous professional training and meet all sorts of standards.

Normally, Ning Tao wouldn’t have qualified, but his grandfather wielded considerable power, and his cultivation was indeed strong enough, so he was shoehorned in.

Once inside the department, Ning Tao behaved very modestly in front of the big shots but was outrageously arrogant within the department. Although everyone in the department was carefully selected, none of them were particularly powerful, at most being in the early or middle stages of innate cultivation.

Naturally, they couldn’t beat Ning Tao in sparring, and since he was ruthless in his attacks, no one dared to fight him anymore.

This further inflated Ning Tao’s arrogance. Moreover, since his cultivation wasn’t built up step by step, his mentality of sudden wealth was all too evident. He acted as if he were the best in the world.

Even after hearing about Ye Fei’s exploits, he was eager to challenge this legendary figure, hoping to defeat him and make a name for himself.

This time, it just so happened that the top leader had given an order for this department to invite Ye Fei.

Ning Tao immediately felt that his opportunity had come. However, he hadn’t been arrogant for long before he was despised by Ye Fei.

How could someone who always looked down on others bear this? He roared in anger, ”Kid, you’re asking for death!” With that, he formed his palm into a blade and slashed directly at Ye Fei’s throat.

Ye Fei had intended to teach this kind of childish bully a lesson, but he hadn’t expected the guy to be so malicious, aiming to take a life with his first move.

Naturally, Ye Fei wasn’t going to indulge him any longer. He kicked out, aiming straight for Ning Tao.

Although Ning Tao had struck first, his speed was nothing to Ye Fei. His palm hadn’t even reached halfway when Ye Fei’s kick landed solidly on his lower abdomen.

”Bang!” With a soft sound, Ning Tao, who had been attacking Ye Fei, was sent flying backward, landing more than ten meters away and then lying motionless.

Ye Fei’s kick hadn’t taken Ning Tao’s life, but it had shattered his dantian, causing all the cultivation he had painstakingly built up over the years, as well as the internal energy his master had bestowed upon him, to dissipate entirely. Moreover, he would never be able to cultivate true energy again for the rest of his life, rendering him a cripple.

At this moment, two people jumped out from each of the two cars that had been silent until now. One of them shouted, ”Mr. Ye, hold on!”

After incapacitating that guy, Ye Fei had no intention of continuing. He stood with his hands behind his back, watching the four people approaching him.

These four appeared to be in their thirties. Although their cultivation was not as high as the guy he had just incapacitated, they had a composed demeanor, nothing like that arrogant fellow.

The four men approached Ye Fei, and the same one who had spoken earlier said, ”Hello, Mr. Ye, we are from the Central Guard Bureau.”

”Bodyguards for Zhongnanhai?” Ye Fei’s brow furrowed slightly.

”That’s one way to put it,” the man said with a smile. ”We’ve been ordered to invite you to meet with the top leader.”

”Invite? More like abduct!” Ye Fei sneered.

A hint of embarrassment flickered across the faces of the four men. The one who had spoken quickly said, ”Of course not. Before we came, the leader specifically instructed us to be very polite and to invite you. And if you don’t want to go, we can’t force you.”

He paused for a moment, then glanced back at Ning Tao, who was still lying motionless on the ground, and continued, ”But this guy has always been arrogant and overbearing, looking down on everyone. Sometimes he even disobeys the leader’s orders. So...”

”So you didn’t stop him, using me to teach him a lesson, right?” Ye Fei said indifferently.

The man smiled sheepishly, ”That’s exactly it. Although it’s not right, we really couldn’t stand him anymore.” The other three men nodded in agreement.

”Don’t worry, you won’t have to put up with him anymore,” Ye Fei said with a smile. The frankness of these four men earned his favor, so his tone softened, ”He’s already incapacitated.”

The four men couldn’t help but gasp. They had thought Ye Fei had merely knocked Ning Tao down, but they hadn’t expected him to be so ruthless as to incapacitate him completely.

However, this was for the best. If that guy were allowed to stay on the team, it would not be a good thing. Moreover, since he had brought it upon himself by acting superior, no one could say anything about it.

Though they were secretly grateful to Ye Fei, this was not something to be celebrated, so the man simply changed the subject and asked, ”I wonder if Mr. Ye is available now?”

”Could you tell me which leader wants to see me?” Ye Fei did not answer immediately but countered with a question of his own.

The man hesitated for a moment, then finally said, ”Number One.”

Number One? Ye Fei frowned inwardly, puzzled as to why such a high-ranking official wanted to see him. Was it to intercede for those families? Or was there something else?

”Alright, I’ll go with you,” Ye Fei decided after a brief moment of thought. He wanted to see what this meeting was about. If it were indeed about interceding, even the Number One leader would not receive his favor.

After Ye Fei agreed, the four men immediately split into two groups. Three of them accompanied Ye Fei, while the other one took Ning Tao with them, though it was unclear whether they were taking him home or somewhere else.

Zhongnanhai was not a new place for Ye Fei. The Zhou and Qi families also resided here. However, this time, the three men were leading him to a more central location.

In other words, the Number One leader was going to receive him at his residence, which further fueled Ye Fei’s suspicion that the leader intended to intercede for those families.

For a moment, Ye Fei’s brow furrowed in thought.
