Chapter 439: Chapter 439: The Medicine was Switched [Second Update]

Yuan Jihu looked at Chief Su, waiting for him to continue.

Donglin City was merely a small city, yet the Wen Family was one of the strongest great families in Lanqu County City. If the Wen Family coveted the position of the Donglin City Lord, it shouldn’t be difficult for them to obtain it.

”Although the Wen Family expended tremendous resources and operated in the shadows for a long time, in the end, the position of Donglin City Lord did not fall into the hands of the Wen Family. The new Donglin City Lord is an elder of the Jing Family at the Innate Peak Realm. Everything the Wen Family did was in vain!” Chief Su took a deep breath as he spoke.

Yuan Jihu was stunned!

He looked dazedly at Chief Su!

The new Donglin City Lord was an elder of the Jing Family? And a martial artist who hadn’t even stepped into the Dao Spirit Realm?

Although Donglin City was a small city, how could the position of city lord fall to a martial artist who had not yet ascended to the Dao Spirit Realm? This seemed unprecedented, didn’t it?

”The reason why the Prince appointed the Jing Family elder as the Donglin City Lord is precisely because of Jing Yan. It is said that once Jing Yan asked the Prince for the position of city lord, he was immediately granted without hesitation,” Chief Su’s voice, filled with astonishment, permeated the room.

Yuan Jihu’s body felt as if all of his strength had been drained, and he slumped back into his chair.

His thoughts seemed to have stalled.

Jing Yan simply asked for a city lord position, and the Prince gave it to him? Moreover, Jing Yan did not assume the city lordship himself but delegated it to an elder of the Jing Family at the Innate Peak Realm.

The Wen Family had expended so much effort, all for nothing? Undoubtedly, the Wen Family would not be satisfied, but the Donglin City Lord was still served by an elder of the Jing Family, which meant that in front of the Prince, the Wen Family was far less significant than Jing Yan.

In the room, Yuan Jihu and Chief Su were silent for a long time.

After a while, Yuan Jihu finally spoke again, his mindset having completely changed. It was just Jing Yan coming to his Haofeng City and killing a few people, haha, wasn’t it just a few people he killed? Let alone killing a few people, even if Jing Yan completely wiped out the Song Family, so what?

”Mr. Jing Yan is staying with the Zhang Family now, is he?” Yuan Jihu’s tone suddenly became very gentle, and when he mentioned Jing Yan’s name, it carried a sense of respect.

”Yes, City Lord, what would you like to do?” Chief Su looked at Yuan Jihu with curiosity.

”Ah, Mr. Jing Yan has come from afar, and as the Haofeng City Lord, how could I not pay him a visit? I will go to the Zhang Family myself! I must go in person! I can’t lose decorum!” Yuan Jihu said with a smile.

Chief Su was slightly taken aback.

He looked at Yuan Jihu, and couldn’t help but inwardly admire the quick shift in his attitude.

”City Lord, you had previously had a minor conflict with Mr. Jing Yan, witnessed by numerous martial artists of Haofeng City. If you now go to...,” Chief Su started, but did not continue.

However, the meaning was clear.

Previously, you wanted to fight and kill Jing Yan, but now you’re making a courtesy call, which clearly implies an intention to apologize and capitulate. Isn’t that the equivalent of slapping your own face?

Yuan Jihu understood Chief Su’s implication and chuckled, ”You mean to say that those people would criticize me behind my back, right? It doesn’t matter. No matter how much they criticize, they can’t do anything to me as the city lord. Besides, with a great figure like Mr. Jing Yan coming, isn’t it only right for me to lower my stance in welcome?”

”And if in the future a more prestigious city lord position becomes available, with even a little help from Mr. Jing Yan, don’t I also stand a chance?” Yuan Jihu said gleefully.

”City Lord is wise!” Chief Su promptly praised.

He couldn’t help but respect Yuan Jihu’s ability to be flexible and adapt.

...

At Alchemist Gao Lan’s residence!

”Alchemist Gao Lan!” Zhang Yibing and the Ninth Elder of the Zhang Family greeted Gao Lan with a bow.

”Has Alchemist Gao Lan finished investigating the Holy Spirit Potion?” Zhang Yibing asked eagerly.

After the conflict between Jing Yan and the Song Family, this was Zhang Yibing and the Ninth Elder’s second visit to see Gao Lan.

Having witnessed Jing Yan’s strength, Zhang Yibing and others of the Zhang Family had completely cast aside any doubts about the Holy Spirit Potion. Therefore, they immediately sought out Gao Lan after returning to the Zhang Family, wishing to reclaim the five bottles of Holy Spirit Potion.

However, the result was obviously a failure. Gao Lan refused to return the Holy Spirit Potion, claiming that he was still in the process of authenticating it.

So, the next day, Zhang Yibing and the Ninth Elder came again.

”Indeed, the authentication has been completed,” Gao Lan, with a squint in his eyes, nodded.

At this news, Zhang Yibing and the Ninth Elder’s expressions brightened slightly.

Then, with a sweep of his arm, Gao Lan put five porcelain bottles on the table beside him.

”Clan Chief Zhang, please take these fake potions back!” Gao Lan said disdainfully.

Zhang Yibing made a move to retrieve the five bottles of medicine, but upon hearing Gao Lan’s words, he stiffened!

”Fake potions?” Zhang Yibing looked at Gao Lan in a daze, puzzled.

The Ninth Elder also furrowed his brows.

”Yes! These five bottles of potions are completely fake, with no value at all. The claim that they could help martial artists of Martial Arts Ninth Layer Heaven ascend to the Innate level is utter nonsense,” Gao Lan sneered.

”How could they possibly be fake?”

”Absolutely impossible! These five bottles of potions were presented by Mr. Jing Yan; how could they be fakes?” Zhang Yibing said hastily.

Before knowing Jing Yan’s true strength, Zhang Yibing and the Ninth Elder had also doubted the effectiveness of the Holy Spirit Potion. But since discovering that Jing Yan was a Dao Spirit realm martial artist, they no longer had any doubts.

Would a strong person like Jing Yan need to deceive them with fake potions? Furthermore, Jing Yan had no demands on the Zhang Family. Why would he need to swindle them with fakes?

”Clan Chief Zhang, are you saying that these five bottles of potions were provided by the Jing Yan who had a conflict with the Song Family?” Gao Lan’s pupils shifted slightly.

”Yes!” Zhang Yibing looked at Gao Lan.

”Alchemist Gao Lan, could you have made a mistake in your appraisal?” the Ninth Elder said with a tight frown, ”Or, perhaps you’ve mistaken the potions? These five bottles can’t be the ones Mr. Jing Yan gifted to the Zhang Family, can they?”

Zhang Yibing and the Ninth Elder both began to doubt Gao Lan. It was clear Jing Yan would not offer fake potions, but since Gao Lan asserted they were fake, it was quite possible Gao Lan had swapped the five bottles of Holy Spirit Potion.

Hearing the Ninth Elder’s words, Gao Lan’s face darkened.

”What do you mean?”

”Hmph, I’ve wasted much time authenticating these five bottles of potions, only to find they are worthless. And yet, you’re suggesting that I wanted to keep your potions for myself?” Gao Lan retorted with a cold voice.

”You two, please leave! Oh, and the authentication fee for the potions is fifty thousand Spirit Stones. Send them to me later!” Gao Lan stood up, issuing an order to leave!
