SSS Rank Awakening: The World Beyond Redemption

The sign above the gate was almost aggressively red. Thick characters the color of fresh embers spelled out Crimson Flame Sword Art against dark wood, the strokes bold enough to be read from the far side of the street. Rael stood looking at it for a moment and felt a small, private flicker of secondhand embarrassment. It looked like someone had tried very hard to make the name sound dangerous and had landed instead on something that belonged on a storybook cover. Cliche. Trying too hard. He wondered who had approved it.

The gate itself was large, old, and tightly shut. No guards stood outside. No side door marked ”visitors.” No bell rope. Rael stepped closer and knocked. The sound disappeared into the heavy timber as if the wood had simply swallowed it. He tried again, harder. Nothing. He walked the length of the wall in both directions, looking for a window, a secondary entrance, anything that suggested the place expected people to arrive from the street. He found only smooth stone and more timber. Standing back in front of the sealed gate, he put a finger to his chin and spoke under his breath.

”How does anyone do business like this?”

A shadow shifted behind him.

”What? Who?”

Rael turned hard, body already dropping into a half-guard before his mind caught up. A woman stood less than two paces away. He had not felt her approach—no footstep, no shift in the air, no warning pressure of mana. One moment the street was empty. The next she was simply there. The gap in his awareness sent a cold spike down his spine. He took an involuntary step back.

She was striking in a way that had nothing to do with soft beauty but looked gorgeous. Her face was clean-lined and sharp, the kind of features that looked carved rather than painted. There was no spare flesh on her frame; every visible muscle sat exactly where it needed to be, built for speed and repeated force rather than bulk. Her hair was a bright, burning red—not the deep blood-crimson he associated with Aurelia and the Crimsonvale line, but a vivid, living scarlet that caught the twin sunlight and held it. She regarded him without expression.

”What’s your business here, boy?”

The words carried no obvious heat and no obvious welcome. Rael could not tell whether she was annoyed, curious, or simply efficient. The absence of readable emotion made him choose caution. Someone who could stand that close without him noticing was not someone to answer carelessly.

”I saw a poster for this school at the Adventurer Guild,” he said, keeping his tone measured and respectful. ”I wanted to learn more about it. Possibly join, if that’s allowed.”

The woman lifted one hand and pushed her fingers through her bright hair in a short, frustrated motion. ”That damn Karen. I told her not to put up those cringe posters.”

The last part was muttered more to herself than to him. Rael tilted his head slightly.

”Sorry—what did you say?”

She looked at him again, expression still flat. ”Nothing just talking to myself. You said you wanted to join right then why are you not going inside?”

”I want to but I see no entrance.”

Whatever she saw in his face seemed to satisfy her that he was not wasting her time. She walked past him toward the gate without further comment.

”Follow me.”

Rael hesitated only a second, then fell in behind her. She reached the heavy doors, set one foot against the lower panel, and kicked. The gate swung inward with a low groan of hinges that had not been oiled recently. She did not look back to see whether he followed. He stepped through after her.

The compound opened into a wide circular courtyard.

The building itself formed a ring: a continuous two-story structure of dark wood and pale plaster that enclosed the open training ground at the center. Covered walkways ran along the inner face of the ring, their pillars carved with simple flame motifs that had been worn smooth by years of hands and weather. Doorways at regular intervals led into what he assumed were living quarters, storage rooms, and smaller practice halls. The central space was packed earth, carefully leveled and marked in places with faded white lines for sparring. It was large enough that the dozen or so disciples currently training did not crowd one another, yet still intimate enough that a raised voice would carry from one side to the other.

Some of the students worked through solo forms, white uniforms marked with a single red stripe along the sleeve as their blades cut precise arcs through the air. Others sat in meditation along the inner walkway, breathing in slow cycles while faint threads of heat shimmered around their hands. Near the far side two disciples faced each other in a controlled duel, their swords trailing short bursts of compressed flame each time the blades met. The overall impression was of disciplined activity rather than chaos—everyone occupied, no one idle, empty space still remaining for more.

Rael took it in while staying half a step behind the red-haired woman. She stopped near the center of the ground and turned to face him. Her eyes moved over his stance, the way he carried himself, the faint residual marks of recent fighting that still clung to his posture.

”Have you learned a sword art before?”

He considered the safest truthful answer. ”Yes. But I don’t have the attribute required to use the one I was taught.”

A short, dry sound left her—almost a laugh. ”You talk like a noble. Expecting the same class your ancestors held, same attribute, same neat inheritance.” Her gaze sharpened a fraction, not unkind but assessing. ”Or at least like someone who used to be one.”

Rael did not confirm or deny it. She did not press. The absence of interrogation made it easier to breathe. Her manner was blunt to the point of roughness, yet there was no performance in it. She asked what she wanted to know and discarded what she did not. The longer she spoke without ceremony, the harder it became to maintain the careful distance he had started with. Respect remained. Formality began to thin.

He nodded toward a student whose blade left a clean trail of fire through the air. ”That. How does it work? The fire on the sword.”

She followed his line of sight, then looked back at him. Something in his expression—open interest without greed—seemed to decide her. She folded her arms and answered in the same flat, practical tone.

”The name on the gate is Crimson Flame Sword Art. I still don’t know who thought that sounded impressive.” A brief pause. ”The style itself is straightforward. You don’t just pour fire over the blade and swing. You compress the flame along the edge until it sits tight against the steel. Every cut carries both the physical force of the sword and a burst of concentrated heat. Precision first. Explosion second. If you only coat the blade, you waste mana and telegraph every strike. If you condense it properly, the fire stays until the moment of impact and then does the work for you.”

Rael processed the explanation, then frowned slightly. ”So it’s not about making a bigger flame. It’s about making a smaller one that hits harder.”

”Exactly.” The barest hint of approval crossed her face and vanished. ”Most beginners try to throw more fire at the problem. They burn through their mana and still leave openings. The ones who last learn to keep the flame thin and mean.”

”And the body?”

”Footwork and blade angles stay clean. The fire is an addition, not a replacement. If your sword work is sloppy, the flame only makes the mistakes more obvious.” She tilted her head. ”You said you already have forms. Can you still use the movements even without the original attribute?”

”The footwork and the cuts, yes. The full reinforcement, no.”

”Then you start from there. We don’t care what you used to swing. We care whether you can learn to compress heat along a new edge without setting your own sleeves on fire.”

The conversation had settled into an easy back-and-forth. Rael heard himself asking the next question without the careful polish he had used at the gate.

”How long does it usually take before someone can hold a stable edge of flame?”

”Depends on the head attached to the hands. Some manage a rough version in weeks. Others spend months making pretty sparks that do nothing. Talent helps. Stubbornness helps more.” She studied him again. ”You look stubborn enough.”

”I’ve been told that.”

”Good. Stubborn is useful. Arrogant is not. We already have enough of the second.”

A faint, almost unwilling smile pulled at the corner of Rael’s mouth. The woman noticed and did not comment. Around them the disciples continued their work, the soft clash of sparring blades and the occasional controlled flare of fire forming a steady background. The circular walls held the sound in, making the courtyard feel separate from the rest of Ashfall—an older rhythm inside the city’s louder one.

She started walking again, slower this time, and Rael kept pace beside her rather than behind. They spoke about the daily structure of training, the difference between solo forms and paired drills, the way mana had to be cycled through the arms without letting the heat climb into the shoulders and spoil the grip. Each answer she gave was plain and free of mystique. Each question he asked came more easily than the last. The initial stiffness of addressing someone clearly stronger had loosened under the simple fact that she refused to perform strength at him. She simply was, and spoke accordingly.

They had reached the exact center of the packed-earth ground when the noise around them changed.

Every disciple stopped.

Swords lowered. Meditating students opened their eyes and rose. The pair who had been dueling stepped apart and turned toward the red-haired woman in the same motion. As one, they bowed—deep, synchronized, the red stripe on each white sleeve catching the light.

”Welcome back, Master.”

The words rolled across the courtyard in a single shared voice.

Rael felt the shift like a physical change in pressure. He looked from the bowed heads to the woman standing beside him—the same woman who had kicked open the gate, muttered about cringe posters, and explained flame compression as if she were discussing the weather—and the last piece settled into place with uncomfortable clarity.

He had been talking casually to the master of the school the entire time.
