SSS Rank Awakening: The World Beyond Redemption

The pack changed the shape of the hunt.

Two wolves drove straight at his front in a paired rush, spaced just far enough apart that a single sweep of the sword could not catch both. At the same time three others slipped behind him, not charging yet, only tightening the space at his back so that any retreat would put him into teeth. The remaining animals held the outer ring and waited for the first mistakes.

Rael met the lead wolf with a hard block. Steel rang against claws. The second animal came in a half-beat later, aiming for the opening the first impact created. He dropped his weight and let that one pass over his shoulder, feeling fur brush the side of his neck. Before he could fully rise, a third head snapped toward his calf. He drove his boot into the wolf’s muzzle hard enough to send it tumbling, jaws clicking shut on empty air.

He never saw the one in the tree until it was already falling.

It launched from a low branch with all four legs gathered, a dark mass dropping out of the canopy. Rael got the short sword up in time to put steel between himself and the animal’s chest. The collision still took him off his feet. The impact lifted him and threw him several meters backward. He hit the ground hard, rolled, and came up on one knee with the breath knocked half out of him.

He did not get the chance to stand cleanly.

Two more wolves were already committed to the space he had just vacated, closing while his balance was still broken. The stubborn plan of winning this with the sword alone lasted exactly as long as it took him to see that next pair of bodies in the air. Pride would not keep his throat closed.

Flame Manipulation.

Fire tore up from the ground in a short, violent wall between him and the incoming pair. The heat hit them in the face. Instinct overrode coordination. Both wolves broke sideways with sharp, startled yelps, claws tearing dirt as they scrambled out of the burn. The rest of the pack flinched as one, the ring loosening for the first time since it had closed.

Rael used the gap. He came fully to his feet, put a trunk at his left shoulder, and reset his stance where the fire gave him a temporary flank. His lungs still burned from the throw. His sword arm ached. The pack was already gathering itself again, yellow eyes reflecting the dying wall of flame.

Watching them reform taught him the thing he should have named sooner.

They were not attacking at random.

Every lunge had been timed against another. Every feint had existed to create a second angle. When one wolf died, the others did not hesitate in grief; they stepped into the empty place as if a single mind had simply withdrawn a limb and extended another. Twelve bodies. One hunter.

”They’re not attacking randomly,” he said under his breath.

If he kept answering each animal as a separate problem, they would spend him down to bone. He needed to break the shape, not the individuals.

Hellfire.

He put the skill into the ground along one entire side of the clearing—a long, stubborn band of dark-red fire that clung to soil and root and refused to go out. The wolves on that side recoiled as the heat climbed their legs. The ring tore open. Three animals were forced wide, cut off from the main body by a line of flame they would not cross. For a few seconds the pack was no longer one creature. It was a cluster and a remnant.

Rael went at the remnant immediately.

The nearest isolated wolf met him with a rising lunge. He stepped inside it and put the short sword through the base of the neck in a single short thrust. The body dropped. Movement flashed at his back. He turned on the ball of his foot and cut across the second animal’s shoulder as it committed, opening a deep wound that collapsed the leg on that side. The wolf screamed and tried to twist away. He did not chase it.

The third came in lower, aiming to take him at the hip while his blade was still occupied. Rael’s free hand came up.

Frost Bolt.

Ice formed and flew in the same motion. The spear took the wolf through the front left leg and detonated into a spreading sheath of white. The limb locked. The animal’s charge became a crash. It hit the ground hard, skidding, unable to rise cleanly on three legs. Rael closed the last two steps and finished it with a downward cut that ended the sound.

Three down on the broken side. The main body of the pack had not wasted the time.

They were already flowing around the Hellfire, finding the ends of the burning line, reconstituting the circle with the animals that remained. Fewer now, but not confused. The coordination had not died with the isolated wolves. It had simply redrawn itself around the new numbers. They had watched him use fire to split them. They would not offer him the same clean separation a second time.

Rael’s attention was pulled in too many directions at once.

A wolf came from the front. He blocked. Steel shivered in his grip. Another animal raked his left shoulder before he could complete the turn; claws skipped off the Nightfall Armor and still found enough flesh to open a burning line. He hissed, pivoted, and saw the third too late—already in the air, jaws open for his throat. He threw himself aside. Fangs closed on the space his neck had occupied and tore a strip from the edge of his collar instead of his windpipe.

He hit one knee, came up again, and understood the new rule with perfect clarity.

He could not afford a single second of divided focus. Not to check a wound. Not to watch a body fall. Not to admire a skill landing cleanly. The pack had adapted to the fire. They would adapt to the ice. They would keep spending bodies until his concentration slipped once, and once would be enough.

The remaining wolves tightened the ring again, slower now, more careful, yellow eyes bright in the shifting light of the still-burning Hellfire. Rael raised the blood-slick sword, felt the heat and the cold both waiting under his skin, and held the center of a fight that no longer had any simple edges.
