(A/N: From this point on the real story starts the one I invisioned before starting this novel so please keep reading it and comment to share your views)

Her world Titan was dying.

Not in fire alone. Not in a single collapse. It was dying the way a body dies when every organ fails at once—slow, inevitable, and already past the point of return.

The city that had once stretched past the horizon was almost gone. Towers that had stood for centuries lay broken across streets buried under mountains of rubble. Entire districts had vanished into craters so deep their bottoms were lost in shadow. What little remained still burned. Fire crawled through shattered windows, roared along avenues where blood ran between the cracks like dark rivers, and painted the low clouds the color of old wounds.

Among the ruins the beasts had come.

They moved without urgency, tearing apart whatever still lived. Some were scaled and vast. Others were twisted things of flesh and exposed bone. Their roars rolled between the broken walls and drowned the distant screams of the few humans who had not yet been found. A massive creature dragged a corpse through the street by one leg, leaving a long smear. She barely glanced at it. She had watched that same beast perform the same act more times than she could count.

Then the dragon crossed the sky.

Its wings tore through the smoke, casting a moving shadow over the ruins before it disappeared into the clouds. The roar that followed was one she knew by heart. The same dragon. The same path. The same timing.

Her eyes lifted higher.

There was no true sky left. Beyond the shattered atmosphere hung a planet—enormous, impossibly close. She could see its mountain ranges and the slow swirl of its oceans. Clouds moved across its face as it descended, its shadow already swallowing the far horizon. She stared without surprise. She knew the exact moment the first fragment would break free. She knew the sound it would make. She knew where the pieces would fall.

A deep rumble shook the air.

A section of the approaching planet calved away and began its long fall.

Her eyes closed for a brief moment.

Again.

The thought carried no fear. Only a bone-deep exhaustion.

She had watched this ending before. More times than memory could cleanly hold. Every cycle she had tried something new. She had changed the place she made her stand. She had chosen different people to protect. She had arrived earlier, stayed later, fought until her body gave out. She had sacrificed pieces of herself she once believed essential. None of it had mattered. The ending remained the same.

Her gaze dropped to the ground around her.

Bodies covered the street. Some were comrades who had fought at her side until their last breath. Others were ordinary people who had never held a weapon. A man still clutched the hand of a child. A soldier lay face-down beside a shattered blade. Blood had sprayed across a nearby wall in a pattern she recognized. She knew some of the faces. She had watched them die in previous cycles. She had sworn, each time, that she would save them. She had failed each time.

Her fingers twitched against the blood-soaked stone. The tremor was not fear. It was frustration so pure it bordered on despair. Her body was ruined again—half of it burned beyond use, every breath a fresh tear through her chest, blood slipping steadily from the corner of her mouth. She could not stand. She could not fight. She could change nothing.

Again.

Distant screams rose from the ruins. She knew those voices. She knew how they would end.

Her eyes began to close.

Perhaps the true weakness had never been the beasts or the falling world or even the man who always arrived at the final moment. Perhaps the weakness had always been her. She had been given chance after chance, and every time she had proven too small for the ending she wanted to rewrite.

Then—

A footstep.

A boot settled into the blood directly in her field of vision.

She opened her eyes.

Another step. Slow. Unhurried.

She did not need to raise her head. She already knew the shape of the presence. White hair. A white sword. The same calm that never changed no matter how many times the world burned.

He walked through the smoke and the bodies as if the path had been laid out for him long ago. Perhaps it had. She lifted her head anyway. Their eyes met. Behind him dragons continued to circle the burning heavens. Beasts roared in the distance. Above them the planet kept its slow, inevitable descent. The end was arriving on schedule.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then she found enough breath for a whisper.

”Was it... necessary, Ashborne?”

He stopped. His expression did not shift. The white sword rose without haste.

She did not try to move. She already knew the arc of the blade.

It flashed.

Her head left her body. For one stretched second the world turned upside down—burning towers, falling sky, the white figure standing over her remains. Then his voice reached her, calm and almost gentle.

”You can’t change the end, Selene.”

Darkness took everything.

---

Selene opened her eyes.

The first thing she registered was motion—the low vibration of a vehicle moving over uneven ground. The second was the feel of rough rope binding her wrists behind her back. She turned her head as far as the restraints allowed. Other people sat or slumped around her, all of them bound. Some were crying quietly. Some stared at nothing with the blank acceptance of those who had already decided the outcome. A few had simply gone empty, as if the will to remain present had been used up.

She tested the ropes once, then stopped. The situation was familiar down to the smell of the canvas and the particular rattle of the wheels.

How many times does this make it now?

She had lost an exact count somewhere past the twentieth repetition of this same sequence. The shock had worn away years ago. What remained was a tired clarity. She was a Regressor—someone who returned to an earlier point in time each time she died—but the stories written about people like her had never matched the reality. In those tales the protagonist could try the same approach again and again until it worked. In her experience every action carried weight. People remembered things she had not yet done. Small changes created large, unpredictable fractures. No one ever behaved exactly as they had in the previous cycle. The future was not a fixed rail she could ride until she learned the correct stops. It was a living thing that shifted under every choice.

She remained still and silent among the other captives. If she did nothing, the events that had always followed this moment would unfold once more.

Selene closed her eyes again and began the quiet work of deciding which thread to pull this time.
