SSS Rank Awakening: The World Beyond Redemption

The silence between them stretched until the still water itself seemed to listen.

Ekaksha’s single eye remained fixed on Rael. When the rough voice returned, it carried something that might have been dry amusement.

”The rabbit girl Mira.”

Rael’s shoulders tensed before he could stop them. ”What about her?”

”You found her interesting didn’t you. Beautiful, even. Yet you took no step. Why?”

The question landed with the weight of someone who had already watched the entire evening unfold. Rael tried to deflect the way he usually did when the conversation turned too close.

”I didn’t thought of you as someone who give pep talk Ekaksha.”

Ekaksha didn’t say anything and waited for Rael to explain better. Rael looked at him and thought he was not satisfied with the answer rael as just given an he is not letting the conversation go easily.

”I don’t know maybe I was tired or that I haven’t done anything like that till now or maybe I just wanted to rest. Not everything has to be a grand decision.”

”You looked at her the way someone looks when they notice something for the first time.” Ekaksha’s tone did not change. ”Then you pulled back. You kept the distance even when she offered less of it.”

Rael let out a short, humorless breath. ”You’re teasing me. Either way she was just teasing and nothing would have happend anyway.”

”Am I wrong?”

He opened his mouth to answer and found the easy reply missing. He had told himself the whole walk back to the room that Mira’s teasing was harmless, that she saw him as a child playing at adulthood, that responding would only encourage something neither of them meant. Those reasons still existed. They no longer felt complete. Underneath them sat a quieter, uglier hesitation he had not named until the chained figure forced it into the open.

Ekaksha spoke into the gap.

”You think she will stop looking at you that same way once she knows that what you think of yourself as... Useless.”

The words were plain. They cut anyway.

Rael’s jaw tightened. The First Realm, the public declaration of classless, the family’s cold dismissal, the way even a stranger’s casual kindness now arrived with an internal flinch—he had carried all of it into the inn without examining the shape it made. Hearing it spoken aloud in this place made the flinch harder to ignore. For him it has become harder to connect with anyone.

For a time he said nothing. The water under him remained almost perfectly still. The seven chains held their eternal tension.

Then, quieter:

”You’re not useless, Rael. Not to me atleast.”

The statement came without softness, yet it carried more force than any of the earlier probes. Rael felt something in his chest shift—not healed, not resolved, only acknowledged by a presence that had known him longer than any living relative. He stared at the faceless head and the single pale eye, and the questions he had been holding began to surface in a different order.

”How do you know about her?” he asked. ”About Mira. About what I was thinking when she leaned over the table. You told me before that you couldn’t see what I see.”

Ekaksha did not look away.

”Have I said that?”

Rael waited.

”You and I are one Rael. Remember that.”

The sentence settled over the water like a change in pressure. Rael had always treated the visits as visitations—something that entered his sleep from elsewhere or rose out of a sealed corner of his own mind. The idea that the boundary was thinner than that, that the figure in the chains shared the same continuous thread of experience, rearranged every previous conversation in retrospect. The help with studies. The quiet presence through childhood. The year of absence after the awakening. All of it sat differently if ”one” was not a metaphor.

He did not ask for proof. The fact that Ekaksha could speak of Mira’s silver hair and the exact temperature of the embarrassment in the stairwell was already proof enough.

Rael’s next question came out slower, more careful.

”Was it you?”

”Was what me?”

”The seal on my Intelligence. The thing that keeps it locked at the bottom of the status screen. Did you put it there?”

”No.”

The answer was immediate and flat.

”Whoever did that does not mean you well and I only want to see you rise.”

Rael absorbed the words. An enemy capable of reaching into the foundation of his attributes before he even awakened, of leaving a mark that still resisted every ordinary attempt to understand it. The list of people with that kind of reach was short and dangerous. He filed the knowledge beside the other unfinished debts he carried.

”What do you want?” Rael asked at last. ”From me. From this. You’ve been here my whole life. You help when you feel like it, you stay silent when you don’t, and you still won’t say what any of it is for. What do you want?”

Ekaksha’s formed lips moved in the faintest suggestion of a smile.

”I already have what I want.”

The reply gave nothing and closed the subject at the same time. Rael felt the familiar frustration rise and then subside. Some answers still could not be forced. The figure in the chains had never pretended otherwise.

A sound interrupted the stillness—a single, sharp note of metal under strain.

Rael’s attention snapped to the chains. One of them, the heavy link that had circled Ekaksha’s neck, had begun to loosen. The iron looked older than the others, the surface pitted, the tension no longer absolute. As he watched, the final holding strength failed. The chain slipped free of the pale throat and swung outward in a sudden, heavy arc, directly toward him.

Rael threw himself sideways.

He was almost fast enough.

The end of the chain brushed across his open palm as it passed. Pain flared—white, immediate, and wrong in a way ordinary burns were not. He hit the water hard, sending a wide ring of ripples outward, and clutched the hand to his chest. The chain continued its swing and then simply stopped, hanging slack in the air as if the force that had animated it had been spent.

Ekaksha remained suspended by the remaining six chains, the newly freed length of iron dangling uselessly beside him. The single eye watched Rael without visible concern.

”I can finally move my head.”

Rael didn’t know what to say this was something that never happened before it was the first time he was seeing any changes in the chains.

”You should wake up boy,” the rough voice said.

The water, the sky, and the chained figure began to lose solidity at the edges. Rael tried to speak and found the dream already thinning around the words. The last thing he felt was the continuing burn in his palm, too precise and too deep to belong to ordinary sleep.

He woke in the inn bed with a sharp inhale.

Morning light—Aetherion’s long morning—pressed against the window it was still very dim light. The room was quiet. His body ached in the familiar places from the previous day’s fights. He sat up and opened his right hand.

Across the palm ran a clean, raised scar in the exact pattern of a heavy chain link. The skin around it was pink and tender, the mark already set as if it had been there for days rather than minutes. He closed the hand, opened it again, and felt the phantom heat still lingering under the surface.

Rael stared at the scar for a long time.

”So it wasn’t just my imagination after all.”
