SSS Rank Awakening: The World Beyond Redemption

Rael sat on the edge of the bed with his right hand open under the mana-lamp light. The chain-shaped scar cut cleanly across the palm, raised and still faintly warm, as if the iron had left a memory under the skin. He turned the hand once, then again, and tried to make the pieces fit.

Why had that particular chain come loose? The others had held for as long as he had been visiting that same place for all his life. The neck chain suddenly gone loose did not explain the sudden failure or the way it had swung toward him with purpose. And how could he have seen Ekaksha inside his sleep for an entire life without ever learning what the entity actually was? The questions circled without landing. One conclusion refused to move: no one—human, entity, or otherwise—offered help for years without some form of return. Ekaksha had guided him through childhood lessons, had steadied him in ways Rael still could not fully map, and had asked for nothing obvious in exchange. That absence of visible price made the relationship more confusing, not less. He did not hate the chained figure. He simply no longer trusted the shape of the kindness.

Outside the window the light was thin and blue-gray. Aetherion’s long night was ending; the first of the twin suns had not yet cleared the walls, but the darkness had begun to lift. Early enough that the city still felt half-asleep.

He uncorked one of the minor health potions that he bought from the market before from his storage ring and poured the pale liquid over the scar. The potion sank in. The pain did not change. He waited longer than necessary, then tried a second small application. Nothing. The burn sat outside the reach of ordinary recovery the same way. In the First Realm he had burned his whole arm till black and watched lesser potions close the damage in minutes. This was different—deeper, cleaner, and stubborn. He would need a higher-tier potion or an actual healer. For now he wrapped the palm in clean bandage, tight enough to protect it, loose enough that he could still close his fingers.

Dressing took longer than usual. Every flex of the hand sent a bright, precise spike up his wrist. He gritted his teeth, finished with the straps of his armor, and went downstairs.

The common room was empty. Chairs stood on tables. The hearth held only ash. The air still carried a faint trace of last night’s cooking, but the space itself felt paused. From the kitchen came the soft sounds of someone already working—water, a knife on a board, the low clink of pottery. Footsteps approached the swinging door. Mira pushed through with a cloth over one shoulder and her silver hair tied back more practically than the night before. The bunny ears flicked once when she saw him.

”Well, well. The serious customer rises with the suns.” The teasing note was already in her voice. ”Couldn’t sleep, or did you just miss my face?”

Rael gave a small, tired sound that might have been a laugh. ”Something like that.”

She started to say more, then her eyes dropped to the white bandage around his right hand. The playful tilt of her head changed.

”What happened?”

”Burned it. Turning off the lamp.”

Mira’s ears flattened slightly. ”Don’t lie. Our lamps are made of mana-stone. They don’t burn skin.” She waited. When he offered nothing else she exhaled and nodded once, accepting the silence without pushing. ”All right. Don’t tell me. Sit down anyway. I can help.”

He sat. She pulled a chair close and held out her own hand, palm up. After a moment he rested his bandaged hand in hers. Her fingers were careful as they unwrapped the cloth. When the chain scar came into view she went still.

”That’s not a normal burn.”

”I noticed.”

Mira closed her eyes. A soft, cool light gathered around her hands—clean and steady, the unmistakable signature of a healing class. She worked in silence for a time, brows drawn together. The light intensified. Sweat began to show at her temple.

”You’re a healer,” Rael said quietly.

”Among other things.” She did not look up. ”Don’t worry about payment. I don’t charge for this. The inn already keeps me fed.”

He watched the stubborn scar slowly lose its angry color under her effort. ”You’re rabbit-folk. In a major human city. And a high-end healer at that. How does that work here?”

Mira’s mouth quirked, though her focus stayed on the hand. ”Ashfall does a lot of business with mixed-blood communities. Rabbit-folk, fox-kin, a few others. As long as you pay taxes and don’t start trouble, most people only care whether you can do the job. A healer who can close bad wounds is welcome almost anywhere.” She guided a fresh pulse of light into the deepest part of the mark and added, lighter, ”The ears are just a bonus for the customers.”

He noticed she had steered the conversation away from the rarity of her class. He did not press.

”This burn is fighting me,” she murmured after another stretch of silence. ”Whatever made it wasn’t ordinary fire or acid. I’m having to push harder than I expected.”

”You don’t have to—”

”I said I’d help.” The words were firm but not unkind. She poured more of her skill into the work until the last of the raised chain pattern smoothed into ordinary pink skin. When she finally released his hand she sat back and wiped her forehead with the cloth from her shoulder. The cool light faded.

”There. Try not to collect any more mystery burns for a few days.”

The teasing tone returned, but it sat thinner than before. Something quieter moved underneath it—tiredness, or an old sadness she had not intended to show. Rael felt the difference the way he had felt the difference between ordinary wolves and the Alpha. He adjusted the way he spoke to match.

”Thank you. Really.”

Mira blinked, then smiled with less performance in it. ”You’re welcome, Rael.”

They sat in the empty common room while the light outside strengthened. Conversation drifted to safer ground. The earlier heat and awkwardness from the previous evening did not return. In its place settled a simpler ease. Rael found himself answering without measuring every word. Mira, for her part, stopped reaching for the sharpest tease and simply talked. He felt like he made a first friend in Second Realm.

When the first real gold of the twin suns crossed the windowsill he stood. She stood with him. On impulse—practical, necessary, and only slightly dishonest—he reached out and closed his hand briefly around hers.

The system acknowledgment flickered at the edge of his awareness. He accepted it in the same heartbeat and let go.

Mira looked at their hands, then at his face, ears flicking in clear surprise and with a blush. ”What was that for?”

”Thank you for everything Mira.” Rael said again, and meant it on more than one level.

After sometime he left her in the quiet common room with the morning light and the faint scent of bread beginning to rise from the kitchen, the new class sitting cleanly beside the others, and the chain scar gone as if it had never been more than a dream. Outside, Ashfall was waking. He had cores to sell, a week already paid for, and a long list of questions that still had no answers. For the moment it was enough to walk out of the inn with both hands steady and as for Ekaksha he can’t know anything about him now so he just stopped thinking for now.
