SSS Rank Awakening: The World Beyond Redemption

The Venom Spider gathered what remained of its strength and committed everything to one last charge.

It came in a broken, furious line—eight legs driving against scorched earth, body low, spinnerets already working. Multiple strands of web shot forward in a dense, overlapping spray timed to pin him in place while the legs followed to crush and pierce. There was no more circling, no more careful testing of distance. The monster had decided the fight would end here, one way or the other.

Rael did not give ground.

Flame Manipulation answered the first demand he placed on it. Fire coiled along his right arm, tightening, lengthening, taking the rough shape of a blade that burned without a physical edge. The heat distorted the air around his forearm. When the webs reached him he swept the burning construct across their path. The strands blackened, curled, and fell apart in drifting ash before they could wrap his limbs or chest. Embers scattered across the dirt.

A heavy foreleg scythed toward his head. Rael dropped under it, feeling the wind of the strike pass through his hair, and stepped inside the spider’s reach. For a moment the bulk of the creature loomed directly above him—the scorched carapace, the ice still clinging to one leg, the wet sound of its breathing. He did not waste the position on a shallow cut. He was already moving past, forcing the spider to turn if it wanted him in front of it again.

It turned faster than its injuries should have allowed. Another leg lashed out. Rael twisted, the burning blade on his arm scoring a shallow line across the limb as he slipped clear. The monster’s momentum carried it a half-step farther than it intended.

Frost Manipulation.

He drove the cold downward. Moisture in the soil flash-froze into a slick, uneven sheet directly beneath the spider’s weight. Six functional legs met ice instead of purchase. The creature’s stance shattered. It skidded, legs splaying, abdomen dipping toward the ground. The sound that came from it was part hiss, part snarl.

Rael was already shaping the next strike.

Frost Bolt.

The spear of pale ice formed and flew in a single breath. It struck the joint of a second leg with a sharp, crystalline crack. Frost raced outward from the impact, racing along the limb, locking chitin and tendon in a spreading white sheath. Two legs now dragged, heavy and half-useless. The spider’s posture collapsed further. It caught itself on the remaining limbs, body listing, underbelly briefly exposed as it struggled to stay upright.

Rael’s eyes caught the difference in texture—the softer, less armored section beneath the main plates of the abdomen. A vulnerability the earlier exchanges had not shown. He stepped back at once, opening distance before the monster could gather itself and close again.

The spider tried to rise. The frozen legs refused to take full weight. It staggered, adjusted, and still tried to come forward.

Rael raised his open hand.

”Inferno Bolt.”

The compressed projectile formed in a tight, white-hot core and left his palm with the familiar tearing sound. This time the spider had neither the speed nor the clean footing to slip aside. The bolt struck the softer section squarely and detonated. Fire punched inward. The explosion tore through internal structure with a wet, heavy rupture. Fragments of burning chitin and darker matter sprayed across the clearing. The spider’s entire body convulsed. It remained standing only by stubborn, failing instinct.

Rael walked toward it through the thinning remnants of Hellfire still clinging to the ground. The heat licked at his boots and the edges of his armor without slowing him. Flame Manipulation rose again—this time focusing the fire into a tighter, denser edge along the same arm, turning the burning construct into something closer to a true cutting weapon. He did not rush. He measured the distance, the height of the wound, the last weak movements of the legs.

The final slash was short and precise. The flaming edge drove through the already ruined core of the abdomen and out the other side. The Venom Spider’s legs folded in a progressive collapse. The heavy body settled into the dirt with a long, uneven shudder, then went still. Residual flames continued to eat at the edges of the carapace for a few seconds longer before dying down.

Around the clearing the remaining strands of web withered and burned away in slow orange lines. Smoke rose in thin columns. The sharp chemical smell of venom mixed with the cleaner scent of wood ash.

Rael stood over the corpse until he was certain no reflex remained. Then he turned, crossed to the tree where his short sword still hung trapped, and cut it free with a controlled application of flame that freed the steel without ruining the grip. He slid the blade back into its sheath and only then took stock of himself.

A few shallow cuts. Bruises that would darken by evening. The earlier slice on his arm had already stopped bleeding. Nothing that required a potion. The realization settled with quiet satisfaction—he had used every skill available to him in a single continuous fight, without holding back for an audience or a later contingency. Long-range pressure, battlefield control, defense, and a finishing close strike. The gaps were still obvious. His pure melee ability remained weak; without a proper technique the sword was little more than a tool he could swing. That would have to change. Magic could carry him only so far if he ever lost the space to shape it.

He crouched beside the spider’s ruined abdomen, grimaced at the heat and the smell, and forced his hand into the damaged cavity until his fingers closed around a hard, rounded shape. The monster core came free with a wet sound. It was smaller than some he had taken in the First Realm, yet it glowed with a steady, dense light that spoke of higher concentration. He turned it once in his palm.

”Not bad.”

The system registered the kill a moment later.

Rael closed his hand around the core and stored both it and the corpse. The fight replayed itself behind his eyes in fragments—the web cage, the deliberate retreat onto open ground, the alternating fire and ice, the final commitment. He had killed stronger monsters by pure level in the First Realm, yet few of those battles had felt this demanding. The spider had been intelligent, adaptive, and unwilling to offer simple openings. Part of the difference might have been Aurelia’s control; those earlier beasts had often moved like puppets with borrowed strings. The rest was likely the simple fact of Aetherion itself. Mana density here sat heavier in the air and in the bodies that had grown under it. Everything hit harder. Everything lasted longer.

He took a final look at the blackened clearing, then turned away. The deeper forest waited, and with it creatures that had never stepped into the thinning light near the city walls. Rael adjusted the fit of his armor, felt the comfortable weight of the recovered sword, and started walking.

Behind him the last of the webs collapsed into ash. Ahead, the Wildlands continued without comment.
