Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife

Chapter 1297: Chapter 1298: Mother Cheng’s Complaints (Supplemental Chapter)

Early the next morning, Cheng Su went to buy fruits for the festival, carrying mooncakes for her mother’s family. She greeted Father Qi and Mother Qi, saying she’d have lunch at her parental home, and then headed there.

The two houses weren’t far apart, just a ten-minute walk away. Knowing Cheng Su was coming today, Father Cheng had been waiting for her.

Receiving the gifts Cheng Su brought, he said, ”I thought you’d come after lunch!”

”There are a lot of people at home, and I’m not in the mood to deal with them, so I came early to chat with you!” Cheng Su said.

”What, your Aunt from Taiguo hasn’t left yet?” Mother Cheng handed her a glass of honey water, saying, ”This honey was collected by your dad from the mountains. It’s wild honey, very tasty.”

Cheng Su thanked her, took a sip, and indeed, it was fragrant and sweet. She smiled and said, ”No, they haven’t; my mother-in-law thinks that if they go back, it’ll just be the two of them, feeling lonely during the festival. She suggested they stay at our house for Mid-Autumn and then return!”

”What, staying at your house for the festival?” Mother Cheng said, ”How can an aunt stay at someone’s house for the festival?”

Cheng Su knew this was rural superstition, where a married daughter wouldn’t spend festivals at her natal home, fearing it would disturb the family’s feng shui and affect her brothers’ luck, let alone just an aunt.

Logically, her aunt was traditional and should know this. But since Mother Qi suggested it, she didn’t decline and stayed.

What a character!

”Mom, don’t be superstitious. Look at our family, my elder sister has been living here for half a year after her divorce, hasn’t caused any harm, has she? My life in Taiguo is still smooth sailing!” Cheng Su said.

She just couldn’t stand the aunt saying one thing and doing another.

Mother Cheng snorted, dragged a chair over, sat down, and asked, ”You’re still on about that; a couple of months ago, your mother-in-law made a fuss at our house, saying you borrowed money. What happened with that? Did you really borrow?”

Cheng Su chuckled awkwardly, ”Oh, you guys don’t worry about it, I know what I’m doing!”

”You...”

”Alright, if the daughter says she knows, she definitely knows.” Father Cheng stopped her from pressing further.

Cheng Su took another sip of honey water and asked, ”Where’s Cheng Zhi?”

”Early this morning, he went up the mountain with Haizi and Shanzi, said they wanted to pick some wild fruits!” Mother Cheng said with a hint of exasperation, stood up again, rummaging through Cheng Su’s festival gifts, and asked, ”Does this include shares for your third uncle? Have you set it aside?”

”I prepared gifts for you and third uncle’s family. Didn’t we agree that after the first year, from now on, we’d just do these gifts between us and third uncle’s family? You should divide them out!” Cheng Su said, ”These mooncakes are from our own restaurant, and they taste pretty good. I brought two boxes for you, eat them yourself or give them away, it’s up to you.”

”Only you are generous enough to give away such expensive things!” Mother Cheng muttered, but a smile crept up as she looked at the gifts.

Her daughter was married, and she was living comfortably now; these festival gifts looked dignified.

She divided a part out, put away the rest, and then heard Cheng Su asking her dad about Cheng Zhi saying he didn’t want to study anymore.

”Don’t mention that kid, he’s just not cut out for studying. His test scores are a mess. I don’t think we can hope for him to bring honor to us with his education.” Mother Cheng was visibly annoyed.

She saw Jianguo of the Qi family getting into university and throwing a banquet, and she felt envious, hoping that if Cheng Zhi had a bit of talent, he could bring her such honor, and no matter how many banquets she’d host, she’d be willing.

But that kid just wasn’t studying material, it’s really frustrating to compare him to others.
