Chapter 97: Chapter 105: Treasure is Unhappy

The ones who understand a person the most are definitely the ones who love that person the most.

And in this world, no one loved Jane Sampson more than Grandpa Sampton and Granny Sampton.

Granny Sampton still vividly remembers Jane’s 18th birthday, when she stood there smiling sweetly, the picture of innocence. But suddenly, Old Sir Sampton said to her,

”Our Jane treasure isn’t happy, she’s not happy at all.”

At that time, Granny Sampton thought Jane’s unhappiness was because even though she was the birthday banquet’s ”longevity star”, the main character, it was Mother Sampton who only took Julie Sampton around to meet the guests.

Even though she was the ”longevity star”, she could only wear a plain white dress, ceding the bright red, striking dress to her sister Julie.

But at this moment, Granny Sampton suddenly understood what Old Sir Sampton meant when he said that their Jane treasure was unhappy.

Her unhappiness wasn’t just about being upstaged as the protagonist or losing a pretty dress.

It was because she felt unhappy and bitter inside.

Jane didn’t care about a dress or the attention of everyone; what mattered to her was the heart of those who cared for her. When she said there was nothing she couldn’t afford to lose, it was because she felt she had nothing left to own.

”When you were just born, you were so tiny in your grandparents’ arms, and your dad whispered that it was a pity such a pretty child was a girl. Grandpa chased your dad around the hospital to strike him.” It was probably because of Father Sampton’s casual remark that Grandpa Sampton and Granny Sampton doted on Jane Sampson so much from her childhood.

Jane’s childhood was truly dominant in the Sampton Family, a tyrannical little princess, and even the birth of Bright Sampson didn’t affect her status one bit.

Who in the great courtyard didn’t know that as a child, Jane Sampson was like a little demon queen? Just how wild was Jane’s childhood?

Climbing trees to take bird eggs and lighting fires to roast them—that was nothing.

Scaring others with bugs was even more trivial.

It was commonplace for her to knock someone to the ground in a dispute, leaving them howling in pain.

Grandpa Sampton and Granny Sampton were at their wits’ end for a while, but it was useless; if they scolded her and Jane felt wronged, she would run off to the Black Family’s home, cry in Peter Gingery’s arms, and claim she was going to run away from home to become Old Master Black’s granddaughter.

The moment Old Master Black heard this, he was delighted and announced in front of everyone that it was good for a girl to be a bit wild, so she wouldn’t be bullied later in life.

With those words from Elder Black, Jane’s antics became even worse.

She kept this up until she began learning the piano, which occupied most of her energy and attention and finally settled down, giving everyone in the courtyard some respite.

Granny Sampton can hardly remember the year when Jane’s personality changed so abruptly, when the Jane who dared say and do anything without fear suddenly became very well-behaved and quiet.

It wasn’t just because she had become considerate but also because she started to live cautiously.

Because she knew that if she didn’t hold back, didn’t try to win the favor of the people in the house, one day she might suddenly find herself without a home.

Granny Sampton finally understood why Grandpa Sampton said Jane was unhappy—for so many years, her Jane treasure had been suppressing her true nature. Although her heart was unhappy, angry even, she had lost the right to throw a tantrum. Even though she felt wronged, she no longer had the privilege of saying the word ’wronged’.
