She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 289: Chapter 294: Gone Mad

“Lady Su Yun could no longer keep hiding it; her younger brother Su Hai had always been straightforward, and even if she put on airs as Captain or the President’s wife in front of outsiders, she would never do so in front of Xiao Hai.

Because the two of them grew up together, Su Yun often revealed her deepest, most fragile side to him.

“I… When I first went to the countryside, I was completely disheartened and thought that Meng Xingzhi had long since remarried and didn’t want me, and I definitely wouldn’t wait for him. Plus, the living conditions in the countryside were so harsh back then that I could barely get enough to eat, and as someone from the city, I could have starved to death if I wasn’t careful.” Su Yun paused, then detailed the hardship she endured in the countryside all over again.

Things like waking up in the middle of the night with hunger and having no other choice in the freezing winter but to drink cold water to pretend to be full.

Su Hai’s face turned pale as he listened but toughened up to press on with his questions, “Then what?”

“At that time, there was a demobilized comrade who was kind to me, and I… I followed him…” Back then, it wasn’t a formal marriage; neither party had any relatives present. The countryside was so poor at that time that they couldn’t even afford to lift the lid off a pot, let alone have money for a wedding feast?

They barely managed to piece together a piece of cloth to make a garment.

And Su Yun was with that man because she was acting out of spite and desperation for support to survive.

She insisted on not marrying because she knew she would return to the city one day. How could she leave evidence of what she considered a stain on her life from her time in the countryside?

Marriage would have been evidence of that stain.

“Tell me about the child!” Su Hai’s head was buzzing non-stop; he only knew that they, the Su Family, had another precious girl out there!

He could finally understand why Elder Hai loved sneaking out to search for his granddaughter. If their father found out he had another granddaughter out there, he’d surely team up with Elder Hai to search for her!

“The child, I left her in the countryside,” Su Yun finally looked timid under Su Hai’s gaze.

She pursued her own happiness, which wasn’t wrong, yet after so many years of marriage to Meng Xingzhi without bearing a son or daughter, she would always think of that estranged daughter when the night got still and silent.

“So the silver bracelet you lost was actually for that daughter?” Su Hai inquired.

“Yes,” Su Yun’s head dropped lower.

“What was her name?” Su Hai asked, taking a deep breath.

“I… I was afraid that giving her a name would make the attachment too strong, so I didn’t name her!”

“You…” Su Hai pointed his finger at his sister, almost died of anger. “You’ve gone completely mad, Su Yun; you’re terrifying.” He didn’t need to ask why Su Yun had abandoned that daughter.

Wasn’t it because she feared not being able to marry Meng Xingzhi? Absolutely insane, to forsake her own flesh and blood for the sake of a man. She had the nerve to do it; she was on the verge of throwing away all the Su family’s pride.

“If father found out about this, he would definitely come here himself to break your legs.”

“Xiao Hai, you can’t tell Dad, you absolutely can’t tell Dad. And Xingzhi, if Xingzhi knew that I’ve lied to him for so many years, what would he think of me? You have to help me this time; you must help me.”

“How do you expect me to help you?” Su Hai asked coldly, the corners of his mouth twisted sarcastically. “Shall I go to the countryside and see if that girl is dead or alive?”

“Xiao Hai, you can’t blame me; I had no choice. If I had stayed in the countryside any longer, I would have gone insane, I would have definitely gone insane. I had to be pure and clean to marry into the Meng Family.” As Su Yun spoke, tears streamed down her cheeks, a bitter sorrow as if she was venting all the pain that had been suppressed by the secret over the years.
