Genetic Ascension

Chapter 1807: Choice

Sylas continued to stare at the small black box like he hadnʼt just come across the realization of the millennia.

He might have come to what he thought was the right conclusion, but what he still didnʼt know was what this meant for him moving forward.

A Race that had planned so far ahead... if they had done it unselfishly, then Sylas could simply take everything and move forward with it. He was the Progenitor of Earth and potentially a descendant of this Race, so it was as much his birthright as it was anyone elseʼs. In fact, it was more his birthright than anyone elseʼs.

Sylas wasnʼt the sort to care about something like that, as he only cared what he could accomplish on his own, but when it came to matters of his family, it was different. There was no denying that the help of the First Race of Earth would make a huge difference.

The problem with that was that relying too much on them would also cause problems. Sylas could have chosen the First Statue at the bottom of Earthʼs oceans if he had wanted to. But he hadnʼt done so because he grasped that it would cause more problems than it would help with.

However, should he choose them this time? Did it even count as choosing them right now, or was he seeing much further down the road?

Sylas knew the answer was probably the latter. Whatever changes this was causing would be slow and deliberate over an increasing period of time. It wouldnʼt be until he was powerful enough to protect himself that whatever secrets were left would truly unleash themselves.

For a Race that had had no choice but to hide themselves, this was the smartest path to take.

But what Sylas needed to decide right here and now was if he wanted to follow their plan in the first place. Was it worthwhile for him... and most importantly, was he falling into a trap by doing so?

If he was truly their descendant like the other Humans of Earth, then it could very well be that they had done this simply to survive, like they were parents to their children, hoping and praying he would succeed and revive what they had once been.

But if they were more sinister...

They might very well see him as inferior stock that needed to be formed into just the right vessel for them to make use of.

Maybe one day soon he would be fighting them off from trying to take over his body.

It wouldnʼt be the first time that Sylas had met selfish Ancestors. What were the hidden families of Earth if not selfish? Archibald had been the only exception, and he was exactly that-the exception, not the rule.

All the others had been wiped out by the system because they had overstepped their bounds.

You might be able to argue that they thought they were doing what was best for Earth. None of them believed there was a chance to fix things and that this was well and truly the only way forward. They didnʼt think that Earth had a chance to break free of all the powerful Races that were vying after them.

But what had Sylas proved in the end if not that he was correct all along?

Who was to say if the First Race also thought they were just ”doing what was best” too?

There were so many things they had left behind that only someone as intelligent as Sylas could decipher. But that might very well only be because they were looking for the perfect vessel as well.

It was hard to decide what direction to take, which way was the right way to go, what created the most sense for him... It was quite the dilemma.

”All this for an extra set of Meridians?” Sylas spoke to no one in particular. ”Sure. Why not?”

Sylas squeezed down on the mantle.

Sylas squeezed down on the mantle.

There was a surge that erupted toward him.

What Sylas hadnʼt allowed to sway his decision all this time was that he knew that he was on a timer. The best time to activate the Chaos Mantle was certainly during this upgrade. While his Gene Classes and his Tier were progressing, and his body was being reshaped, there was no doubt that whatever changes the Chaos Mantle wanted to make to him would be best taken now.

Yet, Sylas seemed to have waited until the very last moment to make this decision. If there had been a third party watching, they would have certainly been filled to the brim with anxiety.

However, due to the existence of Reaper Sealwright, Sylas didnʼt care one way or another.

He didnʼt need the First Race to make it to the ceiling of the universe that intrigued him so much. He could do it on his own.

But since the First Race was giving him a few convenient steps to use, he didnʼt mind taking them.

Sylasʼ aura flared to an entirely new level.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

The Duchess took a strong step back, Gogo swaying wildly in the air as he tried to maintain his position.

The world whined and groaned, and it felt like even a D-tier world was struggling to keep it together beneath the momentum of Sylasʼ evolution.

His stats began to skyrocket, leaping upwards by bounds at a time.

Lightning sparked and silvery black strands formed blades that crisscrossed like butterfly wings in the depths of the void. But rather than causing a hurricane thousands of miles away, the chaos they wrought was front and center, present right before them all.

Sylasʼ bones grew denser, his features more perfect, his hair thinned a bit before thickening even more than before.

His clothing, unblemished by his battle with Zayreus before and the Duchess now, only seemed to fit him all the more perfectly, his shoulders settling in as his skin glowed.

Sylas took a breath and exhaled, a flash of red coming from his deep emerald irises.
