Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 328: Chapter 328 This Matter is Surely Not Simple

Ye Bingyu grew increasingly alarmed as he listened. ”Second Sister-in-law, let’s not mention this to your sister-in-law for now. There are many people who look alike, and it would be embarrassing if we made a big mistake.”

Despite his words, instinct told him this matter was definitely not simple.

After all, there were things he understood better than Shi Jingfang did.

When he heard Second Sister-in-law mention Qin Lijuan, his mind buzzed. He was almost certain that what she said was true.

He recalled being injured on a mission while in the army and subsequently hospitalized. The nurse who had taken care of him then was Qin Lijuan.

That woman would always find reasons to approach him, spouting all sorts of nonsense. He had directly given her the cold shoulder and asked their superiors to replace her.

He next saw her at Zhang Baosheng’s house, where Fang Zhichun introduced her as a friend.

Since she hadn’t bothered him again after that, he hadn’t paid her much mind.

Later on, Qin Lijuan got to know his wife, Xia Dongxue, through Fang Zhichun. Ye Bingyu had even told Xia Dongxue about the hospital incident, warning her to be wary of Qin Lijuan.

However, by that time, Qin Lijuan was already in a relationship and discussing marriage. So, seeing that she wasn’t stirring up any more trouble, he and Xia Dongxue hadn’t paid her much mind.

Since then, his wife had never mingled with Qin Lijuan again. After all, who would want to befriend a woman who had coveted their husband?

The more he pondered, the more terrifying the implications seemed. ”Second Sister-in-law, I understand,” he said. ”I will have someone start an investigation.”

Ever since leaving the Agricultural Reclamation Group, Shi Jingfang had been plagued by guilt. If her suspicions were true, then she had truly wronged her eldest brother-in-law and his wife. She had been in the delivery room, yet someone had managed to switch the baby right under her watch!

However, she didn’t know about Qin Lijuan’s involvement. She assumed it was the work of someone else. After all, it was thanks to Qin Lijuan’s help that she had been able to enter the delivery room and accompany her sister-in-law during childbirth.

After Shi Jingfang left, Ye Bingyu sat there, mulling over everything once more, before finally getting up and heading out.

He drove away from the factory and soon arrived at a residential area.

After parking, he walked into an alley, making his way to the last house, and then knocked on its gate.

A man’s voice called from the courtyard, ”Who is it?”

Ye Bingyu called back, ”Huzi, it’s me.”

The gate swung open, and the man inside exclaimed joyfully, ”Brother Ye, what brings you here?”

Huzi’s full name was Zhong Yuhu. He had been a soldier under Ye Bingyu in the army. They had carried out many missions together, forging a bond through life-and-death experiences.

Both had been seriously injured on the same mission, after which they transferred to civilian work.

They had both started working at the steel factory together. Unfortunately, Huzi’s father and stepmother were terrible people who constantly pressured him to give his job to his half-brother.

Initially, Huzi refused. But his stepmother threatened that if he didn’t agree, she would marry his younger sister off to an old widower and use the dowry money to buy a job for her own son.

His eldest sister had already been sent to the countryside as an educated youth; he couldn’t let them ruin his remaining younger sister’s life as well.

To ensure his stepmother couldn’t control his sisters’ future marriages, Huzi used his job as a bargaining chip to negotiate terms.

They could have his job, but he and his two sisters would sever all ties with the family, vowing never to interact with them again. Furthermore, his father, Zhong Laixi’s, old-age care would no longer be their responsibility.

The stepmother added her own condition: they could not dispute the inheritance with her son and had to leave the family without a penny.

Huzi, after feigning reluctance, agreed to her conditions. Aside from that one-and-a-half-room house, the family probably didn’t even have one hundred yuan to their name, let alone the fact that the house was allocated by their work unit.

What could they possibly gain even if they fought for it? Huzi invited respected individuals and several close relatives to bear witness. He and his sisters then swiftly signed the severance papers with his father’s new family of three. Huzi then moved out with his younger sister.

Ye Bingyu had helped him find this small courtyard house.

Ye Bingyu was eager to uncover the truth about what had happened back then, so he didn’t beat around the bush, though he didn’t disclose the full situation either. ”Huzi, I need a favor from you.”

”Brother Ye, just ask.”

”I need you to take a trip to Han City for me. Investigate Zhang Baosheng’s situation after he returned to his hometown. I need every detail, no matter how small.”
