Chapter 798: A Stranger Who Flashed Past

”But Weifeng is usually obedient, so why did he suddenly run out today?”

Everyone belatedly shifted their attention to this matter.

”Right, Weifeng has never acted like this before...” the handler scratched his head, ”and this is the first time Iʼve seen him so agitated.”

”Weifeng always follows orders. Unless something unusual happened, he shouldnʼt behave like this...”

Xiao He contemplated, his gaze sweeping over the group of bodyguards.

Only four bodyguards had come over here; the rest remained at their posts, though many were looking this way because of the earlier commotion.

Weifeng ran over so excitedly just now—could he have been trying to find someone?

”Forget it, forget it. Letʼs drop it.”

Wang Sheng waved his hand to close the matter, not keen on digging deeper.

After all, one side involved crew members, the other was Bao Xingshengʼs bodyguard team. If they insisted on investigating, the production team would likely take the blame, and Wang Sheng couldnʼt afford to explain that away.
Wang Sheng naturally prioritized the big picture.

Among the people on site, apart from Wang Sheng whose words carried weight, the other authority figure was, of course, Xiao He.

He glanced at Producer Wang, then at the bodyguard captain who looked embarrassed, and decisively ended the topic: ”Hahaha, since itʼs all a false alarm, thatʼs that! Weifengʼs always been lively. Maybe itʼs just the heat today, he ran off to stretch his legs—Producer Wang, although this was a misunderstanding, it did interrupt everyoneʼs work. This time itʼs on me, Iʼll treat the whole crew to some cold drinks to cool off.”

Then he looked at Liu Rulan. ”Sister Liu, please ask Xiao Chen and the other crew members to prepare the drinks and hand them out. These gentlemen were startled too; have them brought over here so it wonʼt hold up their work.”

Liu Rulan nodded, ”Thatʼs the right thing to do.”

The bodyguard captain hesitated, quickly refusing: ”No, no, thatʼs unnecessary. Weʼre still working, itʼs inconvenient for us to accept things.”

Wang Sheng hadnʼt expected Xiao He to be so decisive, and let out a light laugh before saying, ”Itʼs fine, Teacher Xiao, weʼll handle it from our side. Itʼs really hot today, people panic easily, so we should do something to help everyone cool down.”

”No problem.” Xiao He looked down at Weifeng, who gazed up at him longingly on the ground, and joked, ”I like Weifeng a lot. Since this little rascal caused the trouble, Iʼll take responsibility. Just donʼt punish him by taking away his dog food later.”

He then addressed the bodyguard captain, ”Donʼt worry. Even during work, itʼs allowed to drink water to replenish energy, right? I donʼt think Mr. Bao would mind. Weʼll get his approval, so please donʼt be polite.”

Wang Sheng considered for a moment, then smiled and chimed in, ”Teacher Xiao, you canʼt spoil Weifeng too much. I think he still needs to be punished for his dog food.”

Xiao He decided with a grin, ”Then letʼs deduct one dayʼs snacks! Donʼt think I donʼt know—some folks on the crew feed Weifeng treats every day, always different kinds... Look at him now, heʼs much fatter than when he first joined the crew! If this keeps up, heʼll need forced dieting.”

Suddenly the serious topic turned to the dog, and everyone smiled at one another. The earlier tension evaporated and a cheerful atmosphere took its place; the previous awkwardness and distance vanished.

With Xiao Heʼs intervention and mediation, the matter was officially ruled a misunderstanding.

They chatted casually for a while, then each returned to their own tasks and dispersed.

Liu Rulan quickly arranged the cold drinks Xiao He requested, sending Xiao Chen and Lao Qi to distribute them, and the crew erupted in cheers.

As for why Weifeng suddenly ran out, no one cared anymore.

Once people gradually dispersed, Liu Rulan finally exhaled in relief.

”That rescue was timely, well done!”

She patted Xiao Heʼs shoulder.

Xiao He smiled and tilted his head toward Liu Rulan. ”Do we need to talk about how well we work together?”

”But about Weifeng...”

Xiao He continued to rub his chin, his eyes drifting back and forth toward the parking lot nearby, casually scanning the burly bodyguards in black. Doubts sprouted in his mind.

”If he ran out suddenly, there has to be a reason.”

Xiao He remembered Zhuang Hongyi mentioning that Weifeng used to be a drug-detection dog.

Could he have detected illegal activity here?

But thinking back to when he called Weifeng from upstairs moments ago, Weifengʼs response seemed happy—wagging his tail excitedly, which didnʼt feel like the reaction of a dog sensing danger.

Besides, the handler said Weifeng ran out from the set; it seemed unlikely the dog could detect trouble in the parking lot that far away from the set.

So what really happened?

Seeing Xiao He deep in thought, Liu Rulan opened her mouth, struggling inwardly, but finally pulled Xiao He close and whispered while covering her mouth, ”When I was upstairs just now, I think I saw someone I know, but Iʼm not certain...”

Xiao Heʼs eyes narrowed slightly. ”Who?”

Liu Rulan hesitated a moment, glanced around to confirm no one was nearby, then covered her mouth and whispered, ”Do you remember the Xu Youyou incident? At the fire scene, the man who rescued people with you?”

Instantly, Xiao Heʼs thoughts flashed back to that day in the fire.

The water sprayed from above, thick choking black smoke, and that determined silhouette who rushed into the blaze without hesitation to save people...

And later, when they brushed past each other in the corridor, the police scent he caught—

”I remember him.”

Xiao He said with certainty.

”At that time I went into the fire with him. Unfortunately...”

The Cheng Hongwen he had carried out had a final breath that Xiao He treated with medicine to save, but the Xu Youyou that the policeman rescued died forever in that fire and murder.

That incident was one of the main reasons the Chen familyʼs fall from grace in Hong Kong happened. The criminal ledger hiding Xu Youyouʼs evidence was later found by the surviving Cheng Hongwen, which became critical proof of the culpritsʼ crimes.

Sadly, their contact had been so brief that neither he nor that policeman had exchanged names in person.

”I remember he was with Brother Tong.”

Xiao He recalled carefully, ”If the fire hadnʼt been so unforgettable, it would have been really hard to recall him.”

”His name is Cheng Bei. Heʼs a police officer.”

Liu Rulan sighed and said, ”You should be clear about the circumstances now. Like Tong Junhui, he was undercover.”

However, whereas Tong Junhui retired successfully after that incident, the fate of the officer...

Liu Rulan had no authority to know his whereabouts, but Cheng Bei had once visited when Tong Junhui was hospitalized. At that time he still wore plain clothes and moved cautiously.

If Tong Junhui hadnʼt listed her as his emergency contact back then, she might never have had the right to know Cheng Beiʼs name.

But that was the limit of her knowledge.

Liu Rulan could only silently hope that the policeman would finish his mission soon and return home safely.
