Brother Dao Took the Entertainment Industry by Storm, Fans Beg Me Not to Kill Anymore

Chapter 789: Xiao He: Petting Without Owning Is Our Lazy Peopleʼs Motto!

”Anyway, itʼs got nothing to do with us.” Xiao He said. ”Sounds like itʼs still about that cruise party from before.”

It seemed the entire upper echelon of Hong Kong was currently in a state of ”agitation” over this matter.

Although it was just a party, for many of them, it wasnʼt merely a simple gathering. It was a grand and crucial opportunity for business talks, potentially involving commercial planning for the next year or two.

Especially the families of the several organizers. Since the downfall of the richest Chen family, they had been unable to establish a clear hierarchy, yet now they were shaking hands and agreeing to jointly host a business party open to Hong Kong and even the global stage. No matter how you looked at it, this was unusual.

Liu Rulan smiled and shrugged. ”So thatʼs why Hong Kong is probably going to get lively, little by little...”

Just then, a ”bloody” dog head appeared at Xiao Heʼs feet.

”Weifeng!”

”Over here, Weifeng!”

The temporary caretaker nearby called out repeatedly, but the dog head kept nudging against Xiao He.

Xiao He and Liu Rulanʼs conversation came to an abrupt halt. Helplessly, he bent down and gave the dog head a vigorous rub.
The caretaker had to walk over, removing the fake fur from Weifeng while cheerfully teasing Xiao He. ”Weifeng really loves you the most, Teacher Xiao! Every day after filming, he has to come and circle around you.”

Xiao He said gloomily, ”Probably because during filming every day, Iʼm the one chasing and playing with him, so he sees me as a playmate.”

Despite his complaints, Xiao He crouched down and helped the caretaker remove Weifengʼs makeup, muttering, ”You little guy, is it because Iʼve been playing with you lately that youʼre so clingy to me?!”

”Woof!”

Weifeng immediately responded with a bark, as if gladly acknowledging Xiao Heʼs words.

Xiao He: ”...”

Liu Rulan: ”Pfft—”

Liu Rulan couldnʼt hold it in anymore and burst out laughing. ”Looks like thatʼs really it! Every day on set, either youʼre chasing him or heʼs chasing you. A human companion so energetic and in tune with dog nature is really rare! Who else would he play with if not you?”

The actors playing the monster were mainly the young woman named Wan Li, whom Xiao He had met that morning, and this Belgian Malinois named ”Weifeng.”

Wan Li handled most of the shots, many of which were close-ups and tight shots, while Weifeng mainly handled the chase scenes.

And in those chase scenes, Xiao He was generally the fastest runner, with the other two practically useless.

So Weifeng, being competitive, would resolutely chase after Xiao He to ”bite” him as soon as filming began.

Xiao He, being stubborn, would just run when chased, refusing to let the dog land a single ”bite.”

The end result was that after a scene, Xiao He could tire the dog out until it was sprawled on the ground, tongue hanging out.

And thus, this ”man-dog bond” laid a solid foundation.

Every time filming wrapped up, Weifeng would circle Xiao He a few times before following the caretaker back to eat, like dogs greeting each other before parting at a gathering.

It was just that Xiao He was reluctantly treated as one of the dogs, which left him feeling rather helpless.

”Alright, Weifeng, go back and eat. I need to go eat too!”

”Woof!”

Weifeng responded happily, wagging its tail as it followed its caretaker away.

Wow! That question and answer were quite cooperative!

Liu Rulan stood by, looking from Weifeng to Xiao He, and after a moment of thought, asked, ”Youʼre not thinking of adopting Weifeng, are you? I heard a lot of people on the crew have their eyes on him! I even heard Lyu Dun asking Director Zhuang about Weifengʼs adoption procedure the other day.”

Weifengʼs performance on set was obvious to all - obedient and smart. Even with its often terrifying makeup and costumes, most people grew fond of its personality once they got used to it.

Even Liu Rulan, a ”cat person,” couldnʼt bring herself to say she ”disliked” it.

Xiao He pressed his forehead. ”Me? Forget it!”

Liu Rulan raised an eyebrow. ”Didnʼt you say last time that you liked dogs, not cats? I thought you and Weifeng got along pretty well.”

”Itʼs not a dog-versus-cat issue.” Xiao He looked helplessly at Liu Rulan. ”Iʼm so busy that even the villa I bought is gathering dust. Where would I find time to raise him? I canʼt just leave him with my parents, can I? Besides, a big dog like this is quite tiring to care for.”

If he was going to raise it, he had to be responsible.

Although Xiao He did like dogs, his hectic life didnʼt allow him to stop for one.

”Most importantly, what I enjoy is the pleasure of petting a dog, not the responsibility of owning one.”

Finally, Xiao He spoke his true thoughts.

Liu Rulan: ”...Classic you.”

A guy who was a bit lazy yet incredibly driven.

”Just find someone to help take care of and walk him.”

She made another suggestion.

Xiao He gave Liu Rulan a suspicious look. ”Sister Liu, arenʼt you a cat person? Why do I feel like you want to adopt Weifeng even more than I do?”

Liu Rulan rolled her eyes. ”Iʼm just saying it because I see you like him! Iʼm just asking around! Talk about not knowing a good deed when you see one.”

Then she turned and walked back. ”What are you standing around for? Letʼs go! Remove your makeup, then head back to eat!”

Xiao He scratched his head. ”Got it.”

-

Though he was eager to eat, some fellow actors had script-related questions for Xiao He, so by the time he left the building, over an hour had passed.

As luck would have it, as he reached the entrance, he ran into Zhuang Hongyi and others seeing off Bao Xingsheng.

It was then that Xiao He noticed just how grand Mr. Baoʼs arrival had been. There were at least seven or eight cars parked at the entrance alone, and it was uncertain whether more were parked elsewhere.

The bodyguards had already gotten into their vehicles.

Getting into the same car as Bao Xingsheng were President Mao and Daoist Hu.

President Mao wore his usual cheerful expression, while Daoist Hu, with an ethereal air, stroked his beard lost in thought. In contrast, Bao Xingsheng, who had arrived in good spirits, was now as black-faced as a pot.

But judging by Zhuang Hongyiʼs unchanged expression, Xiao He guessed that Bao Xingshengʼs dark look wasnʼt due to something on set, but rather because he had heard some unfavorable results from the masters.

That was just how people were sometimes.

When the masters said good things, they believed without hesitation. When they said bad things, even if they didnʼt believe it, it still bothered them.

This was also why Xiao He, having been in Hong Kong for so long and having interacted with President Mao and the others, never asked them to do fortune-telling or divination.

What difference would knowing the result make? In the end, wasnʼt it always oneself who made the choices?

Xiao He didnʼt want a birth chart to define his life, nor did he want to know his future and become restrained because of it.

-

”Welcome, President Bao, to visit our set again next time. This visit was rather rushed. Next time, please do us the honor of staying for a meal.”

Zhuang Hongyi smiled and bent down by the car window.

”Yeah, sorry for the intrusion this time.”

Bao Xingsheng forced a stiff smile and gave a slight nod to Zhuang Hongyi.

As for Xiao He, he stood not far from the building entrance, making no move to greet them.

But suddenly, a gaze projected from a rear car window and landed on him.

Xiao Heʼs eyes sharpened, and he stared directly at that car.

It was one of the bodyguard vehicles accompanying Bao Xingsheng, with privacy film on the windows, making it impossible to see the person inside through the dark, gaping opening.

But Xiao He was certain that someone inside had just been watching him through the window.

That look was very neutral—neither friendly nor hostile—and it retracted extremely quickly the moment Xiao He looked over, making it impossible for him to discern whether the gaze was intentional or accidental.

Xiao He furrowed his brow slightly.

Unfortunately, before he could investigate further, the long motorcade slowly started and drove away in an orderly fashion.

Liu Rulan asked from behind, ”Whatʼs wrong? Do you want to go say hi to Director Zhuang?”

Xiao He set aside his confusion and shook his head. ”Judging by Director Zhuangʼs attitude earlier, he seems in a bad mood. Letʼs just head back.”

As for that gaze just now... maybe it was just someone curious about him, the actor.
