Without you, I might not have been here.” Aunt Wu knew that her illness could have taken her life but thanks to the kindness of a stranger, she was healed. Even though the medicine tasted terrible, she was simply glad to be healthy again.

“I’m glad you’re better. Now, let me check your pulse again, just to be sure you’re fully recovered. This way, Tianci can rest easy too.” Qin Xue had Aunt Wu place her hand on a piece of clothing on a table for her pulse reading.

“So, am I alright?” Aunt Wu anxiously observed Qin Xue, fearing she might say she is not completely healed. That would burden her son once more and she found the thought unsettling.

“Yes, you’re fine, don’t worry. Just remember to disinfect all the items you have used with vinegar and boil your clothing to kill any remaining germs and prevent re-infection.” Qin Xue withdrew her hand and instructed Aunt Wu on what to do next.

“I see, so I am finally better! Thank you so much.” Aunt Wu’s eyes welled up with tears. She had been hoping and waiting for this day for so long. Manager to stay alive felt wonderful and she was filled with joy.

“Not at all. Tianci is helping look after my store, so treating you is the least I could do. This is my duty as a healer.” Qin Xue felt humbled, as if she were being seen as a Bodhisattva.

“You are too humble. Many doctors have seen me for this illness but none were able to cure me. You, on the other hand, managed to heal me. How can I possibly thank you?” lamented Aunt Wu. She was grateful to have survived especially since her husband had passed and she was left with her son. Her son returned from military service due to her illness and she thought Qin Xue was his fiancee, only to find out she was already married and was her ‘life-saving benefactor’.

“Please don’t overestimate me, Aunt Wu. The doctors only asked you to rest at home because they probably didn’t know how to tell you the medication was too expensive. So, they prescribed medications to suppress the illness without actually providing a cure.” Qin Xue had seen the prescriptions earlier, indeed, they were just palliatives.

At the end of the day, the Wus didn’t have the money for the expensive medicines. Yet the doctor didn’t want to let a patient slip away like that, so they kept her alive with medications hoping for a miracle. Fortunately for the Wus, they met Qin Xue.

“Now I understand why I always felt uncomfortable but got relief after taking his medicines. Even though I never fully recovered.” Aunt Wu knew the financial conditions of her family. They had to be thankful for a doctor willing to ‘keep her alive’.

“Indeed, doctors have their limitations too. Even though he couldn’t completely cure you, he didn’t let your condition worsen. The issue was not the doctor’s competence, but the harsh reality.” Qin Xue nodded. Many families were driven to bankruptcy in her era due to the illness of a family member.

“I understand what you’re saying, miss. Regardless, I am thankful to all of you who have helped us – my son and I.”‘Aunt Wu got the hint from Qin Xue that she shouldn’t overthink, but she wasn’t an ungrateful person.

“Alright since you’re fine now, I should go. I have a friend waiting for me to treat them, I won’t hold you back.” Qin Xue picked up her backpack and stood up.

“Okay, be careful. Once I get everything sorted out at home, I would like to invite you for a meal.” Aunt Wu looked at her empty home, with not much to offer. She wanted to have a proper thank-you meal but was too embarrassed to invite her over in this state.
