Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]

When they returned to their residence, the sky had turned a gentle gold. Their attendants had prepared a meal, but Bai Li asked for it to be brought to the private dining room rather than the main hall. Neither Matriarch wanted a formal dinner. They wanted an evening that belonged to them, with no elders waiting outside the door and no one asking for a decision as soon as they set down their cups.

Yan Cijin changed into a soft robe and sat near the window while Bai Li poured tea. The mountain was full of small sounds. Somewhere below, an instructor was correcting a student who had made the same mistake three times. A pair of birds argued on the roof, then flew off when a servant opened a nearby door. The lanterns along the paths were being lit one by one, making the courtyard look warm and welcoming against the blue shadows of evening.

Yan Cijin watched Bai Li carry the cups over. ”Do you realize that we have spent the entire day preparing to leave, even though we have not decided whether we will?”

Bai Li sat beside her. ”We have spent the day making sure that we can make the choice without forcing Mount Hua to suffer for it.”

”That is a very responsible answer.”

”I am a responsible woman.”

”You are a woman who packed tea for a mysterious cave.”

”A responsible woman who packed tea.”

Yan Cijin laughed and leaned against her shoulder. ”I am glad we are married.”

”So am I.”

The words were plain, without a flourish, but Yan Cijin felt them deeply. Bai Li did not often speak about love as though she were trying to prove it. She showed it by remembering details, by making space for Yan Cijin’s ambitions, by paying attention to the places where her wife needed care, and by refusing to let the weight of the world become an excuse for neglecting the person beside her. When she said something directly, it mattered because it was never a performance.

They ate together, talking about the people they had seen during the day and the decisions that remained to be made. Yan Cijin described the young apprentice in the medical hall and wondered whether she would become a good physician. Bai Li told her about the defensive elder who had finally learned why the southern ridge formation needed special attention. They disagreed briefly about whether one particularly talented disciple should be sent on an outside mission before or after the next round of training. Their disagreement was gentle but genuine, and they talked it through until they found a solution they both considered fair.

After dinner, Yan Cijin moved closer and rested her head against Bai Li’s shoulder. ”I think the thing I will miss most, if we leave, is not the main hall or the training terraces.”

”What will you miss?”

”The small things. The way the kitchen smells in the morning. The sound of students arguing about forms they have not practiced enough to understand. Lu Wenshu pretending she has no patience for everyone, then staying late to make sure the youngest disciples have warm blankets. I will miss seeing the village lights below the mountain when we return from a long journey.”

Bai Li listened without interrupting. Yan Cijin’s voice had grown quieter, and she was looking out toward the darkening ridges rather than at her wife. ”I will miss them too,” Bai Li said. ”That is why we will not leave carelessly. But missing something does not mean we must hold on to it forever. We can love the place and still let it continue without us.”

Yan Cijin looked at her. ”You make it sound simple.”

”It is not simple. It is just clear.”

She took Yan Cijin’s hand and held it between both of hers. They sat together for a long while, allowing the thought of departure to become real without turning it into a tragedy. They had not left yet. They had not even decided that they would. But their lives had opened onto a possibility they could no longer ignore, and they owed it to themselves to consider it honestly.

Later, they returned to the bedroom and prepared for the night. Yan Cijin loosened the pins in her hair while Bai Li folded their outer robes and set them aside. The familiar routine brought an unexpected calm. They had always helped one another with these small tasks, long before the cave appeared and long before the word ascension entered their conversations. Bai Li brushed the last pin from Yan Cijin’s hair and set it on the dressing table. Yan Cijin turned, took her wife’s face between her hands, and kissed her slowly.

When they parted, Bai Li rested her forehead against hers. ”Whatever we decide, we decide together.”

Yan Cijin smiled. ”Together, but not because we have to agree on every thought before we speak.”

”No. Because we trust each other enough to speak honestly.”

”And because you will still let me choose the tea.”

Bai Li laughed. ”That is the foundation of our marriage.”

”It is the foundation of civilization.”

They kissed again, and the rest of the night unfolded in the privacy of their room. Their tenderness was full of familiar gestures, quiet jokes, and the ease of two people who had loved each other long enough to understand the difference between passion that demanded proof and passion that simply enjoyed being shared. They did not need to promise that nothing would change. They knew change was part of any life worth living. What they promised, in the way they held one another and returned each kiss, was that neither would be required to face change alone.

When they finally settled beneath the covers, Yan Cijin curled against Bai Li’s chest and listened to the steady beat of her heart. It was a sound she had known for years, yet it still gave her the same feeling of safety. Bai Li kissed the top of her head and drew the blanket over her shoulder. Outside, the stars shone over the mountain, and the hidden cave waited beneath the stone. For the moment, neither woman needed to do anything about it.

Tomorrow they would return to the Moon-Mirror Cave, consider the last stage of the trial, and decide whether to take the road beyond the mortal summit. Tonight they were simply Bai Li and Yan Cijin, two wives who had built a life together and were not willing to let an ancient inscription decide its meaning for them.

The next morning began with sunlight falling across the breakfast table, exactly as Bai Li had promised. Yan Cijin found the sweet cakes arranged on a small plate and the good tea already steeping in the pot. She stood in the doorway for a moment, looking at the familiar room, then turned toward Bai Li with a smile that was equal parts affection and accusation.

”You have made it difficult to leave this place.”

Bai Li looked up from the small bundle of supplies she was checking. ”I thought breakfast would help.”

”It has made everything worse. Now I know exactly what I will miss.”

”Then we should eat slowly.”

Yan Cijin crossed the room and kissed her cheek. ”You have learned to negotiate with me.”

”I have had a great deal of practice.”

They ate without rushing. The conversation was light, and they deliberately avoided turning every quiet moment into a discussion about the future. They talked about the previous day’s work, the apprentices in the medical hall, and whether the new cook had finally learned that Bai Li preferred her rice a little less soft than Yan Cijin did. They shared the last sweet cake, each insisting the other should have the larger piece until Yan Cijin broke it neatly in half and declared the argument settled.

When the meal was finished, Bai Li gathered their weapons and practical supplies while Yan Cijin checked the notes from the archive. They brought medicine, water, food, rope, and a small lamp, though the cave’s own light had been enough to guide them on the previous visit. They also carried clean paper, ink, and several narrow strips of silk to mark the route. Yan Cijin added a small packet of tea, and Bai Li did not even pretend to question the choice.

Before they left, they visited Lu Wenshu in the main hall. The first elder had already convened the council and reviewed the draft of the succession plan. She presented it to the Matriarchs, who examined each provision carefully. The arrangement gave the senior council authority over routine administration, established a process for resolving disputes between departments, and clarified who would direct the sect’s defenses if a serious threat appeared. It also made clear that no single elder could claim the authority of the two Matriarchs merely because she held the most senior post. Mount Hua would be governed through the council until the disciples and elders were ready to choose a permanent structure for the future.

Bai Li asked about the villages beneath the mountain. Lu Wenshu reported that the protection arrangements had been confirmed, the damaged road near the western pass would be repaired, and the medical hall had sent extra supplies to the places most affected by the recent extortion. Yan Cijin asked whether the Iron Sand Lodge had returned the money it had taken from the merchants. The elder responsible for the investigation confirmed that the first payments had already been returned and that the remaining compensation had been placed under the supervision of local authorities.

”Good,” Yan Cijin said. ”The merchants should not have to chase them for every coin.”

Lu Wenshu made a note. ”I will ensure it is completed.”

Bai Li closed the report and looked at the council. ”We have not decided whether we will leave, and we may still choose to remain in the mortal world. But the sect must not depend on our presence for every ordinary decision. Continue with this plan. If we stay, Mount Hua will still benefit from it. If we go, it will be necessary.”

No one argued. The elders knew that the Matriarchs were not making an announcement of departure, but they could also hear that the possibility was real. Lu Wenshu bowed, her expression serious. ”We will do our best to keep the sect steady.”

”We know,” Yan Cijin said. ”That is why we trust you with it.”

The words appeared to affect Lu Wenshu more than any formal praise could have done. She had served Mount Hua for decades, and she had never expected her Matriarchs to treat her responsibility as a personal favor. They trusted her because she had earned that trust. She bowed again, and this time the other elders followed, not as an elaborate ceremony but as a quiet acknowledgement that a change might be approaching.

Before leaving the main hall, the two Matriarchs took a little time to walk through the older part of Mount Hua. They had spent the morning discussing authority, records, defenses, and the future of the sect, but the decisions on paper could not show them what the mountain meant to the people who lived there. They wanted to see the place without a council waiting for them, without an elder presenting a report, and without the expectation that every step they took had to become an example for someone else. For a short while, they walked as two women who had grown up within the jianghu and made a home where they could.

They passed the old kitchen courtyard first. The cooks were preparing the midday meal, and the smell of ginger, steamed rice, and hot oil drifted through the open doors. One of the kitchen women recognized them and came out with a towel in her hand, looking slightly embarrassed that she had been caught standing in the doorway with a bowl of dough. She bowed quickly and asked whether the Matriarchs had eaten.
